I am prepared for the crucial No.4 position, says Vijay Shankar
There has been a lot of debate over India’s no.4 slot for the upcoming World Cup. According to Vijay Shankar, he is prepared to play in that crucial spot during India’s campaign in England and Wales. A certain school of thought feels KL Rahul is tailor-made to bat in that position but the Tamil Nadu all-rounder will be the candidate in all likelihood.
Chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad had said that Rahul can be used as a back-up opener if things go topsy-turvy for Rohit Sharma or Shikhar Dhawan. Rahul has been impressive of late in the white-ball format. He had a decent outing in the IPL and faired well in the blue shirt, prior to the Indian T20 League.
Vijay Shankar is ready as World Cup closes in
The same can’t be said about the all-rounder, who hardly got to bowl in the IPL while his batting prowess was limited as his side Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled, post the exit of the foreign recruits- David Warner and Jonny Bairstow.
Shankar feels that he is ready for the challenge ahead. “I am very much prepared for the crucial No. 4 position. I am mentally prepared for that. It is that position where you might have to come in the 7th or 8th over and it might be possible that you have to come after the 30 or 35 overs. I have prepared myself for every situation” Shankar told Times of India.
Shankar wants to justify the ‘3D’ tag
The all-rounder says that attacking mode suits him well and therefore he can go after the bowling attack from the word go. The Tamil Nadu cricketer got a nod ahead of Ambati Rayudu because of his ‘three-dimensional’ abilities.
Shankar believes that he has proven his mettle with the ball in the death-overs and has batted well at crucial stages. The 28-year-old added that he wants to improve as an all-rounder, now that the selectors see him as a potential all-round cricketer.
This will be his maiden World Cup and there will surely be butterflies in the stomach but Shankar is aware of the fact that many potential candidates are waiting in the fringes to have a shot at the global event and that is what makes his mission interesting.
