Bangladesh claimed an important 62-run victory against Afghanistan on Monday (24th June) at Southampton in the 31st match of the ongoing 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

After winning the toss, Afghanistan forced Bangladesh to bat first who scored 262/7 (50 overs). In reply, Afghanistan was bundled out for 200 runs (47 overs).

  • It is the joint third largest victory (by runs) for Bangladesh in their Cricket World Cup history (they also won by 62 runs against Pakistan at Northampton on 31st May 1999). The top two records in this list are winning by 105 runs against Afghanistan (at Canberra on 18th February 2015) and winning by 67 runs against South Africa (at Providence on 7th April 2007).

i) Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman had the bowling figures of 10-0-39-3.

  • It is the second best bowling figures by an Afghanistan spinner in Cricket World Cup history. The record is 9-0-30-4 by Mohammad Nabi against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on 4th June 2019.

 

Mushfiqur Rahim

i) Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has scored 11,029 international runs.

  • Mushfiqur Rahim is the third Bangladesh batsman to score 11,000 international runs. The first two Bangladesh players in this list are Tamim Iqbal (12,688 runs) and Shakib Al Hasan (11,420 runs).

i) Bangladesh left-handed batsman Shakib Al Hasan has scored 1,016 runs in Cricket World Cup.

  • Shakib Al Hasan is the first Bangladesh batsman to score 1,000 runs in CWC.

 

ii) Shakib Al Hasan hit another half-century in this match as he scored 51 runs. It was his 10th 50+ score in Cricket World Cup.

  • It is the second most 50+ scores for a left-handed batsman in Cricket World Cup history. Former Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara scored 12 times 50+ scores in this tournament history.

 

iii) Bangladesh left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan had the bowling figures of 10-1-29-5.

  • It is the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Cricket World Cup history. The previous record was 8-1-21-4 by Shafiul Islam against Ireland at Dhaka on 25th February 2011.

 

iv) In this match, Shakib Al Hasan scored 51 runs and also took five wickets.

  • Shakib Al Hasan is the second all-rounder to score at least 50 runs and also to take five wickets in a Cricket World Cup match. Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was the first cricketer to achieve this feat as he scored 50* and also took five wickets (5/31) against Ireland at Bengaluru on 6th March 2011.  

 

v) Shakib Al Hasan has scored 1,016 runs and also has taken 33 wickets in Cricket World Cup.

  • In CWC history, Shakib Al Hasan is the first batsman to score 1,000+ runs and also to take 30+ wickets.

 

vi) In this 2019 CWC, Shakib Al Hasan has scored 476 runs and also has taken 10 wickets.

  • Shakib Al Hasan is the first cricketer to score 400+ runs as well as to take at least 10 wickets in the same CWC season.
