ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Shahid Afridi Credits IPL For India’s Present Dominance
On last Sunday (16th June), India outclassed their arch-rival Pakistan in the ongoing 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. After that match, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi congratulated the Indian team and BCCI and also credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) for India’s recent success.
Pakistan has never beaten the Indian national cricket team in Cricket World Cup history. Virat Kohli-led India continued their CWC dominance over Pakistan on last Sunday. Playing at Manchester, India won that rain-marred game by 89 runs (DLS method) after managing a big first innings total.
After winning the toss, Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed decided to field first. However, his decision hugely backfired as the Indian batsmen hugely dominated in the first innings. Moreover, Pakistan’s poor fielding helped the Indian batsmen to manage a giant total.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul put an impressive 136-run opening partnership that set a tone for team India. While Rahul scored 57 runs, Rohit played a big knock of 140 runs off 113 balls. Indian captain Virat Kohli also played a superb innings of 77 runs off 65 balls. India managed to score 336/5 in 50 overs.
Apart from the left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir, most of the Pakistan bowlers struggled during India’s innings. Amir had the impressive bowling figures of 10-1-47-3.
Pakistan batting failed to reply properly
In reply, Pakistan had a slow but a solid start as once they were batting on 117/1 in the 24th over. However, the Pakistan batsmen failed to maintain that situation as their batting faced a massive collapse. When Pakistan was struggling on 166/6 in 35 overs, rain once again interrupted that game like the earlier periods of this match.
However, this time, the overs were deducted and Pakistan’s new revised target was 302 runs in 40 overs. Coming to bat again, Pakistan finally managed to score 212/6 in 40 overs as India managed a big victory.
Shahid Afridi expressed his view on his official Twitter account
After that match, Shahid Afridi hugely praised the Indian national cricket team. Talking more about India’s impressive cricket, Afridi credited the Indian Premier League’s success.
Afridi wrote on his official Twitter account, “Congratulations to @BCCI on a well deserved win today. The standard of cricket being played has been exceptionally high & credit goes to IPL for not only helping identify & harness talent, but also in equipping younger players with pressure handling techniques #CWC19 #PAKVIND”

At present, the IPL committee doesn’t allow Pakistan cricketers’ to feature in this competition. However, in the inaugural IPL season (2008), some Pakistan cricketers participated in IPL. In that season, Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi played for now-defunct Deccan Chargers.
