ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: The Top Records Which Rohit Sharma Can Break Against Sri Lanka
Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma is in a great form with the bat in the ongoing Cricket World Cup. On Saturday (6th July), India will face Sri Lanka in their last round-robin stage match of this tournament. In-form Rohit Sharma has some great opportunities to achieve some special feats in this match.
In the ongoing CWC, Rohit Sharma has scored 544 runs in seven innings with an average of 90.66. He has hit four centuries and one half-century in this tournament. Rohit has scored 122*, 57, 140, 1, 18, 102 and 104 runs respectively in this tournament. His powerful batting performances have helped India to qualify for the semi-final of this tournament.
Here we are discussing some of the vital records which Rohit Sharma can achieve against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Rohit Sharma is not far away to score 600 runs in the ongoing 2019 CWC
In the preliminary stages of a CWC edition, the most run-scorer is Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan who recently scored 606 runs in the ongoing 2019 CWC. On Friday (5th July), during their match against Pakistan at Lord’s (London), Shakib broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar and achieved this incredible feat. The previous record holder Sachin Tendulkar scored 586 runs in the preliminary stages of the 2003 CWC.
Rohit is 62 runs behind of Shakib’s 606 runs record. Meanwhile, the Australian openers David Warner and Aaron Finch are also chasing to achieve this record. While Warner has scored 516 runs in this tournament, captain Finch has scored 504 runs in this edition. Like Rohit Sharma’s India, Warner and Finch’s Australia will play their final round-robin stage match of this tournament on Saturday. On the same day, Australia will face South Africa at Manchester.
In the meantime, Rohit Sharma can also target the ultimate record of the most runs in a CWC edition. The record holder Sachin Tendulkar scored 673 runs in the 2003 CWC. To break this record of Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit needs to score 130 runs. As Rohit has a great ability to play big innings, anything can be possible at present.
Till the date, only three batsmen have scored 600+ runs in a CWC edition. Apart from Sachin Tendulkar in 2003 and Shakib Al Hasan in this CWC season, Matthew Hayden also scored 659 runs in 2007 CWC.
Another century will put the Indian vice-captain to the top position
Rohit Sharma has already slammed four centuries in the ongoing 2019 CWC. Another century will help him to become the most centurion in a CWC edition. In 2015 CWC, Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara became the first batsman to hit four centuries and that too in a successive way.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has hit five centuries in CWC career. Only the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar hit more CWC centuries than Rohit. While Sachin hit six centuries in CWC career, another century will help Rohit to equal this record.
Also, if Rohit hits a century against Sri Lanka on Saturday, he will be the second Indian cricketer to hit three successive ODI centuries. In the last year, Virat Kohli became the first Indian to achieve this feat when he hit three consecutive ODI centuries during the home ODI series against Windies.
