Cricket World Cup, heart-breaking

Ahead of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, there were huge expectations on the Indian national cricket team. Around half of that 15-member Team India squad had featured in the previous Cricket World Cup (2003), where India had finished as the runners-up under Sourav Ganguly‘s captaincy.

In their first match of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, India suffered a shocking defeat against Bangladesh. In that Group B match, India was bundled out for just 191 runs (49.3 overs) in the first innings. Later, Bangladesh chased down that target in 48.3 overs after losing five wickets.

However, India secured a thrashing victory in their next Group B match against inexperienced Bermuda. After becoming the first team to score 400+ runs in CWC history (413/5 in 50 overs), India won that match by 257 runs (Bermuda 156 in 43.1 overs).

To qualify for the Super Eight round, India had to win against Sri Lanka in their final Group B match. After Sri Lanka managed to score 254/6 (50 overs), India was all out for just 185 runs (43.3 overs).

Later, Bangladesh secured the second spot of the final points table in Group B. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka finished as the Group B champions after securing victories in all three matches.

It was really heartbreaking for the Indian national cricket team to finish their World Cup journey at the very early stage of the tournament.
