ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019: Day 4 Round-Up
Monday (21st October) was the day four of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019.
In Group A, Scotland and Kenya beat Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Bermuda respectively.
Meanwhile, in Group B, the hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE) defeated Hong Kong. Ireland and Canada also added two points in their account after beating Oman and Nigeria respectively.
Scotland ended Papua New Guinea’s 10-match winning streak with a thrilling victory
Scotland opener and captain Kyle Coetzer (54 runs) and the middle-order wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Cross (40 not out) guided to the first innings total of 146/6 (20 overs).
In reply, Papua New Guinea (PNG) lost their wickets at regular intervals. While PNG were struggling, the lower middle-order batsman Norman Vanua played a great cameo which brought them closer to the victory.
In the final over of the match, PNG needed to score nine runs to win that match. Vanua (33 off 18 balls) lost his wicket in that over and PNG managed to score 142/9 (20 overs). Scotland won that match by just four runs.
Before this game, PNG managed to win 10 successive T20Is.
Among the Irish bowlers, left-arm spinner Hamza Tahir (3/24) managed to pick up three wickets.
Dhiren Gondaria and Collins Obuya guided Kenya to their first victory in this tournament
Kenya vs Bermuda game had the low-scoring affair. Dhiren Gondaria’s brilliant 85 not out (67 balls) helped Kenya to manage the first innings total of 138/4 (20 overs). Apart from Gondaria, none of other Kenya batsmen reached the 20-run mark in that innings.
In reply, Bermuda were all-out on just 93 runs (18.5 overs). Only Delray Rawlins (37 runs) and Janeiro Tucker (22 runs) managed to score double-digit runs in that innings.
The 35-year-old leg-spinner Collins Obuya had the bowling figures of 3.5-0-27-4.
Kenya claimed their first victory in this tournament after beating Bermuda by 45 runs.
The hosts UAE clinched easy victory against Hong Kong
The hosts UAE dominated in the Group B encounter against Hong Kong. UAE bowlers restricted Hong Kong to 116/7 (20 overs). Only the opener Nizakat Khan (31) and the no.3 batsman Kinchit Shah (30) reached the 20-run mark in that innings.
Among the hosts’ bowlers, Rohan Mustafa (2/17) and Waheed Ahmed (2/23) picked up two wickets each.
Opener Chirag Suri and the no.3 batsman Rameez Shahzad guided the team to the comfortable victory. While they had the 93 runs partnership for the second wicket, Suri scored 44 not out and Shahzad scored 54 runs. UAE chased down that target in 15.1 overs after losing two wickets. The hosts won the game by eight wickets (with 29 balls remaining).
Ireland finished Oman’s six-match winning streak in T20I
Gareth Delaney (89*) and the opener Kevin O’Brien (41) inspired Ireland to set up the first innings total of 183/3 (20 overs). In that innings, Kevin equalled the most T20I sixes record (35) in a calendar year. While Kevin has hit 35 T20I sixes in 2019, New Zealand cricketer Colin Munro created that record (35 T20I sixes) in 2018.
In reply, Oman scored 148/9 in 20 overs as Ireland won that match by 35 runs. Only the opener Khawar Ali (50 runs) reached the 20-run mark in that innings.
After winning six consecutive T20Is, Oman finally suffered a T20I defeat.
Canada registered a big victory against Nigeria
In another Group B game, Canada thrashed Nigeria by 50 runs. After winning the toss, Canada scored 159/7 in 20 overs. Nitish Kumar (57 not out) and wicketkeeper Hamza Tariq (33 runs) played important roles in that innings.
Later, Canada restricted Nigeria to just 109/8 (20 overs). Only Chimezie Onwuzulike (39 runs) and Sulaimon Runsewe (27 runs) provided some fights in that innings.
Canadian right-arm pacer Dillon Heyliger (3/16) scalped three wickets in that game.
