Team Australia paceman Kane Richardson, who has made a lucky entry as the replacement for injured youngster Jhye Richardson, is optimistic on his selection in the 15-member squad for the ICC World Cup 2019.
Richardson has expressed delight on his introduction in the Aussie squad. He also reminisced about his omission from the 2015 World Cup squad.
“I remember four years ago missing out on at that 2015 team. I was 24 then and I thought at the next one I’ll be 28. So, that’s probably my shot,” International Cricket Council (ICC) quoted Kane as saying.
All in all, Kane will join the pace quartet of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff and Pat Cummins.
Kane has also partaken in the five-match series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
However, Aaron Finch-led side has whitewashed the Men in Green 5-0.
On Wednesday (May 8), his namesake Richardson was ruled out of the forthcoming World Cup World scheduled to commence from May 30 in London. The ODI showpiece will culminate with the grand finale on July 14 at the historic Lord’s stadium in London.
Kane wants to bowl at any situation for Australia:
Earlier, in March, the 22-year-old Jhye Western Australia pacer has damaged his shoulder during the second One-day International (ODI) at Sharjah.
Thus, he hasn’t recovered fully in time to be on the plane for the United Kingdom. Interestingly, Jhye has been impressive in the five-match series against India where he snared seven scalps.
“In the UAE, I think that is what JL was happy with, those two games I played and bowled right at the end in crunch time. I think that’s my strength, but I want to be a well-rounded bowler who can bowl at any stage of the innings. If I’m to play a role at the World Cup I’ve got to be able to do that as well,” Kane remarked.
Kane Richardson watched the 1999 World Cup while using rented VHS:
Besides, the 28-year-old pacer Kane wasn’t contemplating at his inclusion. He also recalled his memories in England during 1999 World Cup when he borrowed the Video Home System (VHS) to watch the games. He reiterated that ODI showpiece is the ‘Olympics of Cricket’. Aussie head coach Justin Langer has been already saying that during his press conferences.
“I still wasn’t thinking about it a month ago. But to get the call yesterday that struck me the most. I remember watching the World Cup in England in 1999, that was the one I went to a video store and rented the VHS and watched that back! It kind of hit me then that these things don’t come around. It’s the Olympics of cricket, is what JL (Justin Langer) has been calling it,” Kane added.
Since 2013, Kane has featured in 20 ODIs to claim 20 wickets. Kane has proved himself at the top-flight cricket to some extent.
Ahead of their World Cup kick-off Australia will face hosts England and Sri Lanka in the warm-up fixtures on May 25 and 27 respectively.
Moreover, Australia will open their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on June 1 at the Bristol County Ground.
