ICC World Cup 2019: KL Rahul Could be the No 4 in the Showpiece Event Feels Dilip Vengsarkar
Former Team Indian batsman and a skipper Dilip Vengsarkar is of the opinion that KL Rahul can be India’s No 4 in the upcoming 2019 World Cup. Vengsarkar feels that KL Rahul has the technique and the temperament to succeed in English conditions.
A former chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar feels that Team India will have an easy ride till the Semi-final and they can take it from there on and look to win their remaining two matches to lift the title. There has been an area of concern for Virat Kohli and co surrounding the No 4 spot.
Ambati Rayudu who was tipped to be the No 4 by Virat Kohli wasn’t included in the squad and chief selector MSK Prasad revealed that they are considering Vijay Shankar as the No 4 as a start to the mega event. Hence Dilip Vengsarkar feels that KL Rahul might be the perfect No 4 for India in the showpiece event.
“We have a settled opening pair in Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma). Virat Kohli is phenomenal at No 3. I feel that KL Rahul could be an option at No 4. He has the technique and can complement the top three well. I believe No 4 should be a specialist batsman,” Dilip Vengsarkar said on Thursday.
Despite the pitches expected to be batting paradises on most occasions, Dilip Vengsarkar feels that KL Rahul’s technique is very well equipped and that gives him an added advantage.
“Since he is a specialist opener, in case of early wickets, he could provide stability. Also, in a long tournament, if required he can open the innings. I feel that he should be a part of playing XI,” Vengsarkar said about Rahul, who finished second in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2019) run-getters list with 593.
Meanwhile, the former Indian batsman also feels that playing a full series in England last year will be a huge advantage for Team India.
“In England, the weather can be fickle and that can have an effect on the performance. Adaptability will always be the key. But to the Indian team’s advantage, they played in England during the same time last year. We have had exposure to those conditions and that’s a good thing. We should try and use it to our advantage,” said Dilip Vengsarkar who was part of India’s World Cup squad in 1983 when India lifted the title for the first time.
Meanwhile, Vengsarkar also feels that the indifferent form of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav won’t affect them in the upcoming showpiece event. “I am sure both Chahal and Kuldeep must have worked on their game as to what went wrong against Australia. Once they get there, they must carefully assess the conditions and accordingly devise the strategy,” he said.V
