Virat Kohli May Be Removed As RCB Skipper Mid-way Through UAE Leg Of IPL 2021

Virat Kohli could be removed as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) mid-way through the ongoing UAE leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a former India cricketer has said. Virat Kohli earlier announced that he will step down as the captain of RCB after IPL 2021 concludes. Earlier this week, Virat Kohli had announced that he will relinquish his India T20I captaincy after the upcoming T20I World Cup to be staged in the UAE and Oman.

The reason for his axe as skipper seems to be quite evident after witnessing RCB’s meek surrender against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on Monday. RCB had made a humiliating return to IPL’s UAE leg when they were bundled out for just 92 by KKR in their first match of Phase-2. It was RCB’s sixth-lowest total in IPL, as they lost to the Eoin Morgan-led KKR by nine wickets.

Virat Kohli May Be Sacked As RCB Skipper Midway In IPL 2021

After opting to bat by winning the toss against KKR, Virat Kohli (5 runs off 4 balls) fell prey to pacer Prasidh Krishna in just the second over of the match. The 32-year-old batsman was trapped plumb in front and a bad review call didn’t help his case either. Even the body language of Virat Kohli was not the same, as it used to be, throughout the match. He was actually emanating shades of a player who has just decided to step down as the captain of RCB after the conclusion of IPL 2021.

His call to step down before the start of the IPL 2021 UAE leg further was criticized by many including former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who had questioned the timing of his decision. He reckoned if Virat Kohli had to do something like that, he could have done it after the IPL was over. Some cricketers even went on suggesting that the team looked “unsettled” by the untimely announcement. One former India cricketer, on condition of anonymity said that it seems that Virat Kohli might be removed “mid-way”.

“Look at the way he was playing against Kolkata Knight Riders. Just clueless! It seems he is struggling big time right now. There are chances that he could be removed mid-way through the season. “

“It has happened earlier also with other teams — like with Dinesh Karthik in KKR and David Warner in Sunrisers Hyderabad, among others. They were either removed or they stepped down mid-way. So it can happen in RCB as well… I have this feeling after watching yesterday’s match. One more bad game and you can see a change in RCB captaincy right away,” said the former cricketer.

Virat Kohli was appointed the skipper of RCB ahead of the 2013 IPL season as a successor to outgoing captain Daniel Vettori. Since then, the side has unsatisfactory won 62 of the 132 matches under him, to go with 66 losses and 4 no-results, and an IPL trophy has forever eluded him. Appointed ahead of the 2013 season as a successor to spinner Daniel Vettori, Virat Kohli will end up with nine seasons at the helm for RCB.

AB de Villiers, Yuzvendra Chahal, And Devdutt Padikkal Are Likely Candidates To Replace Virat Kohli As RCB Skipper

Senior player AB de Villiers will probably be the apt candidate to replace Virat Kohli. He is greatly respected within the team. But there are also chances that he might not accept the offer. Yuzvendra Chahal’s name is also doing the rounds on the basis of seniority in the team. Yuzvendra Chahal has also been the leading wicket-taker for RCB in the IPL, clinching 125 wickets in 106 games that he has played for the franchise so far.

Youngster Devdutt Padikkal’s name has been coined as well, following the trend seen in recent times of appointing young captains such as Delhi’s Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Rajasthan’s Sanju Samson. The Karnataka batsman Devdutt Padikkal has been among the leading run-scorers for RCB in the last couple of seasons and is considered one of the favourites of Virat Kohli.

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: India Placed In Group B Alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, And Afghanistan

India is placed in the Group B of the tournament alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, nemesis New Zealand, and rising team Afghanistan. Virat Kohli will be leading India in the marquee event and they will be starting their campaign with the high-profile battle against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Pakistan has always struggled against India in the World Cups. Whether it is T20 World Cup or 50-over World Cup, India has remained victorious in all the games. Meanwhile, after facing arch-rivals, India will lock horns with New Zealand, and so far New Zealand has been the dominant side in the ICC events against India. New Zealand defeated India in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2016 T20 World Cup, 2019 ODI World Cup, and 2021 WTC final.

Meanwhile, Team India is one of the strongest sides in the upcoming T20 World Cup event. As they have covered each and every aspect of the team. From top-order batters to middle-order batters and from batting all-rounders to bowling all-rounders India has figured everything out.

The strong bench strength that India has is one of the biggest positives for India heading into the tournament. Also with the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League ( IPL) 2021 taking place just before the World Cup, the big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to take a good form in their bag. Meanwhile, legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni will be the mentor of the Indian team, he will provide much-needed experience to the team in the T20 World Cup 2021.

So far, India has won one T20 World Cup trophy, back in the inaugural edition of the World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni. Also, they were runner-ups in 2014, Moreover, they reached in semi-finals of the 2016 World Cup.

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Best XI Of World Beaters Who Missed Out On Squad Selection

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Best XI Of World Beaters Who Missed Out On Squad Selection. The ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is scheduled to begin on October 17, a few days after the conclusion of IPL 2021, and the final clash of the tournament will take place on November 14 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Originally, T20 World Cup 2021 was scheduled to commence in India but was shifted to UAE and OMAN besides IPL 2021 due to the Covid-19 scare in the country.

There have been a total of 8 teams that have made entry into the T20 World Cup 2021 through direct qualifications apart from the few teams battling out in the qualifying stage including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who could not qualify directly for the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE and Oman.

In the already qualified teams, Group 1 consists of England, Australia, West Indies, and South Africa. On the other hand Group, 2 consists of India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan. All the teams have announced their squads for the T20 World Cup 2021. However, there have been several big names that have been left out from the 15-member squad and their absence from the main squad was a big shocker for cricket fans.

Alex Hales

So far Alex Hales has managed to score 1644 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 136.65 and 8733 runs in T20 cricket at a strike rate of 145.93. Alex Hales has got highly impressive numbers in T20I as well as T20 cricket and he bats with a massive strike rate as well.

Alex Hales was axed from England’s (eventual winners) 50-over World Cup squad in 2019 for failing a second test for use of recreational drugs. He recently enjoyed an excellent BBL campaign and continues to hold the record for the highest T20I score by an England player – 116 not out against Sri Lanka in the 2014 World T20.

The 31-year-old Alex Hales made his international debut in August 2011 through the T20I cricket. He has played 11 Tests, 70 ODIs, and 60 T20Is for England.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan missed out on the T20 World Cup 2021 squad as it shocked cricket fans as many thought that the BCCI selection committee would add him to the squad based on his healthy amount of experience and his red hot form in the IPL.

in T20Is Shikhar Dhawan has scored 1759 runs at an average and strike rate of 27.92 and 126.36. Notably, Shikhar Dhawan has been scoring 450 and above runs in IPL since 2016 and there is no doubt if Shikhar Dhawan would have been on the team for T20I World Cup 2021, he would have performed amazingly well. He was really unfortunate to miss out on selection.

Shikhar Dhawan was the captain recently of the Indian team that toured Sri Lanka, playing all 6 matches on the tour. He registered scores of 86*, 29, 13 in the 3 ODIs and 46, 40, 0 in the 3 T20Is. Delhi Capitals’ batsman Shikhar Dhawan is currently the highest run-getter in the IPL 2021 season with 380 runs in 8 matches averaging 54.28 with 3 fifties. He was 2nd among leading run-scorers in IPL 2020 too with 618 runs in 16 matches averaging 44.14 with 2 tons and 4 fifties.

Faf Du Plessis

Almost every T20 World Cup 2021 squad prediction of South Africa contained the name of Faf Du Plessis. However when the squad was announced fans were left upset and shocked not to see his name in T20I World Cup 2021 squad. Notably, Faf Du Plessis on February announced his retirement from Test cricket to focus on his T20 career. Also, he is in red hot form in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League.

Faf Du Plessis has already smashed a century in the league. But he may miss a few initial IPL games in UAE for an injury he picked up in the Caribbean Premier League. The opener didn’t play any part in this season’s inaugural edition of English cricket’s new Hundred competition because of the lingering effects of a concussion suffered during the Pakistan Super League.

Faf Du Plessis was in tremendous form for CSK this season in India and scored 320 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 145.45 before the event got postponed due to a bio-bubble breach. He was the 3rd highest run-getter after Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes (Image Credit: Twitter)
Ben Stokes (Image Credit: Twitter)

Ben Stokes broke his hand taking a catch for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 and a repeat X-ray and CT scan revealed that he has a fracture of his left index finger. He missed the 2 Tests against New Zealand while his last Test came against India in March 2021.

England was forced to pick an entirely new squad of players and support staff for the ODI series against Pakistan after seven members of the party originally selected tested positive for the virus. Ben Stokes returned to the squad to captain the side. After the Covid-19 outbreak, England named a new 18 member squad captained by Ben Stokes and consisting of 9 uncapped players and still won 3-0.

Ben Stokes withdrew from the Test series against India, IPL 2021, and T20I World Cup 2021 as he has decided to ‘prioritize his mental wellbeing’.  Ben Stokes’ heroics in the final of World Cup 2019 where he scored 84 runs, helping England win their maiden 50-over World Cup title, are still fresh in every English fan’s memory. England won by boundary count after scores were tied in 50 overs and Super Over.

AB de Villiers

Having initially retired from international cricket in 2018, AB de Villiers decided in May of this year that he wasn’t going to return for the T20 World Cup 2021 citing concerns about coming in ahead of players who had long been in the system.

AB de Villiers has played 114 Tests scoring 8765 runs averaging 50.66 and 228 ODIs scoring 9577 runs averaging 53.5. He also featured in 78 T20Is where he averaged a modest 26.12. In 176 IPL matches, he has 5056 runs averaging 40.77 and is 6th among the leading run-scorers in IPL history.

Chris Morris

The most expensive player in IPL auction history will be absent from the T20I World Cup 2021. Chris Morris hasn’t played for South Africa for two years. Chris Morris had last represented the country as a replacement for injured Anrich Nortje in the Cricket World Cup 2019 two years back and the 33-year-old hasn’t been in any contention for a spot despite veterans like Dale Steyn have retired.

Chris Morris has played in 42 One day internationals,23 T20s, and 4 tests in the South African colors taking 48, 34, and 12 wickets respectively.

Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine has been a regular in T20 franchises across the world, however, has not played for the West Indies since 2019. In February he was approached by selectors in relation to being called up to the squad for T20I World Cup 2021 and told them that he wasn’t ready to return to international cricket.

In-form batsman Sherfane Rutherford and spinner Sunil Narine were among a few players not eligible for selection to the World Cup squad after failing fitness standards. Sunil Narine, once the top-ranked spinner in the world, has recently shown versatility at the top of the order as a pinch-hitter and could have been a weapon for the team at the tournament.

Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer’s stress fracture has ruled him out of all cricket for the remainder of 2021. Already a 50-over World Cup winner, Jofra Archer’s pace and lower order hitting make him one of the most sought-after T20 players in the world.

Jofra Archer last played international cricket during the tour of India in March this year. He featured in all five T20Is before being ruled out of the one-day series. Jofra Archer was ruled out of the entire 2021 season following a recurrence of the stress fracture in his elbow. Apart from the ongoing Test series against India, Jofra Archer will also miss The Ashes and the T20I World Cup 2021.

Imran Tahir

Despite being one of the leading spinners on the T20 circuit, Imran Tahir has been left out of South Africa’s squad for T20 World Cup 2021. Imran Tahir has also said in the press that he hasn’t been contacted by South Africa’s selectors since being told he was in their plans for the competition last year. In March 2019, he announced that he would quit ODI cricket following the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Imran Tahir was one of the three big omissions alongside Faf du Plessis and Chris Morris from South Africa’s squad for the T20 World Cup to be held in Oman and the UAE from October 17 to November 14. He is South Africa’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 61 wickets at an economy rate of 6.56. Imran Tahir last featured in a T20I for South Africa in March 2019.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion from the squad was a big surprise. In the IPL and in international cricket, Yuzvendra Chahal was Virat Kohli’s, go-to man. Virat Kohli decided to stick with the leg spinner when the team management decided to bring an end to the ‘Kul-Cha’ partnership.

Rahul Chahar’s rise in recent times might also have played a role in the more experienced spinner not being picked in the XI. The Mumbai Indians leggie had a brilliant first half of the IPL in India picking up 11 wickets from his first seven games.

The UAE conditions for T20 World Cup 2021 will be helpful for him bagging a few more wickets as well. Along with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav was also not selected in India’s T20 World Cup squad. The mystery spinner’s confidence is really down in recent times. Despite being with the side in the last two to three years, Kuldeep Yadav has not played consistent cricket.

The Rumour Of Virat Kohli Stepping Down After T20I World Cup Isn’t True, Says Rajeev Shukla

Rajeev Shukla, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice-President is not impressed by the latest rumours of Team India looking at a change of captain in the limited-overs format after the T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman. Rajeev Shukla is unimpressed by the latest rumours that regular skipper Virat Kohli will step down from limited-overs format after the T20I World Cup.

Reports have been doing the rounds that Rohit Sharma could take over at the end of the showpiece event and Virat Kohli could continue as the Test captain and focus on his batting.

Rajeev Shukla Urges Indian Team To Focus On The 2021 T20I World Cup

Rajeev Shukla said while there is no truth to this rumour, it is important the team focuses on the showpiece’s event rather than getting distracted by such news.

“There is nothing to this rumour. Also, let’s focus on the T20 World Cup rather than playing soothsayer and predicting the future, ” Rajeev Shukla said.

“There have been no talks on split captaincy,” Rajeev Shukla said.

The Indian national selectors last Wednesday picked the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. There were inputs from Rohit Sharma as well as the deputy of the limited-overs team and that seems to have led to talks of split captaincy post the World Cup.

One of India’s most successful captains, Virat Kohli led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins and 27 defeats. In 45 T20Is so far where he has been the captain, India has won 27 times while losing 14 times. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, 34, has led India 10 times in ODIs and led them to victories on eight occasions. In T20Is, he has captained them 19 times of which they have won 15 and lost four.

Rohit Sharma is in the form of his life across formats and enjoys the status of a senior member of the squad. His T20 captaincy records are second to none, having won five IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians apart from Asia Cup and Nidhas Trophy 2018 wins in Virat Kohli’s absence.

Ravichandran Ashwin Stages A Comeback Into World Cup Squad After Playing His Last T20I In 2017

Coming back to the squad, in a surprise move, Ravichandran Ashwin has been included in the team which will begin its campaign in the showpiece event against arch-rivals Pakistan. He had last played a T20I against West Indies in July 2017. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal missed out as veteran former skipper MS Dhoni will be the mentor of the team.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has the hosting rights, the tournament has been moved out of the country with an eye on the COVID-19 pandemic. India will start its campaign against Pakistan. India and Pakistan will be locking horns on October 24 in a group-stage encounter. The tournament will get underway from October 17, with the final to be played in Dubai on November 14.

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Kuldeep Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prithvi Shaw, and Yuzvendra Chahal were some notable omissions from the World Cup squad. India is placed in the Group B of the tournament alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan.

Full squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami; Stand-by: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur

Shikhar Dhawan’s Omission From 2021 T20I World Cup Squad Surprised And Disappointed Farokh Engineer

Shikhar Dhawan’s exclusion left former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer disappointed, who otherwise believes India has picked a formidable squad for the 2021 T20I World Cup. Despite Ravichandran Ashwin’s comeback and the inclusion of leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, a couple of big names like Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal went missing from India’s squad of 15 for the ICC event.

The announcement of India’s T20 World Cup squad by the BCCI selectors on Wednesday packed a few surprises. Against everyone’s expectations, India recalled spinner Ravichandran Ashwin back to its limited-overs fold after four years, while former captain MS Dhoni was appointed mentor of the side.

Shikhar Dhawan’s Omission Surprised And Disappointed Farokh Engineer

There was no place for either opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan or spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, which sparked a debate. While Shikhar Dhawan is expected to have missed out to KL Rahul, Yuzvendra Chahal fell behind fellow leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who bowled wonderfully in Sri Lanka and has been growing in reputation. So while both exclusions were notable, Shikhar Dhawan’s axe despite being in form disappointed Farokh Engineer.

“I haven’t exactly studied it. I only heard it once. But it seems that all the top players are there. Suryakumar Yadav is in the squad, which I am really happy to see. Chahar is a very good bowler, and there is Bumrah of course. I think with Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma, the balance of the team is good. I think we’ve got a good squad,” Engineer told Sports Tak.

“Shikhar Dhawan… well, I’m surprised that he has been omitted because he has come in and done fantastically well. But that is such a huge problem for the Indian selectors that players such as Dhawan are getting to be dropped, which is a huge disappointment because he would walk into any international team as a batsman. He has proved himself time and again and I don’t think a player of his caliber should be on trial.”

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Kuldeep Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prithvi Shaw, and Yuzvendra Chahal were some notable omissions. Shikhar Dhawan has been one of India’s most consistent players in the ICC tournaments and the selectors’ decision to not name him even among the reserves left many surprised.

While it hasn’t yet been revealed as to why the southpaw didn’t make the cut for the T20 World Cup, a report has claimed that the decision was taken keeping in mind his ‘conservative approach’ while batting. Shikhar Dhawan was a part of the Indian team that toured Sri Lanka, playing all 6 matches on the tour. He registered scores of 86*, 29, 13 in the 3 ODIs and 46, 40, 0 in the 3 T20Is.

Farokh Engineer: India Can Win T20I World Cup

Having said that, Farokh Engineer reckons the strength of the Indian team is such that the selectors couldn’t have helped it. The former wicketkeeper feels India is spoilt for choices as far as the opening batsmen are concerned, provided how brilliant KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma have been lately.

“But who do you drop? KL Rahul has done very well. He is superb; one of the best batsmen in the world, I think. Rohit Sharma is on top of his form. Still, I think it’s a very good team they have picked and I think we have every chance of winning the T20 World Cup,” Engineer added.

Ravichandran Ashwin made a comeback after playing his last T20I in 2017. Delhi Capitals’ batsman Shikhar Dhawan is currently the highest run-getter in the IPL 2021 season with 380 runs in 8 matches averaging 54.28 with 3 fifties. He was 2nd among leading run-scorers in IPL 2020 too after KL Rahul with 618 runs in 16 matches averaging 44.14 with 2 tons and 4 fifties.

Full squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami; Stand-by: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur

Rohit Sharma ‘Backed’ Ravichandran Ashwin’s Selection In T20I World Cup Squad

Rohit Sharma, it is understood, has played a major part in the selection of the team for the T20 World Cup. The board and selectors had sought Rohit Sharma’s opinion before the selection meeting and he was insistent on bringing Ravichandran Ashwin back into the scheme of things.

Captain Virat Kohli too was on the same page when the idea was floated during the meeting. The 34-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin last played white-ball cricket for India in 2017 before being sidelined from one-day cricket following the Champions Trophy debacle.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma Played A Role To Bring Back Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravindra Jadeja made a comeback into the Indian white-ball team under stand-in captain Rohit Sharma midway through the Asia Cup in UAE in 2018. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were deemed ineffective in white-ball cricket after India lost the Champions Trophy final to Pakistan in June 2017.

It has taken four and a half years for Ravichandran Ashwin to rejoin Ravindra Jadeja in the limited-overs setup. The off-spinner will also play in the UAE, at the 2021 T20I World Cup. This time too, it is Rohit Sharma who has had a role to play.

“It has been 480 days since I played, so I will always remember this,” Jadeja had announced after the match.

Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar

Virat Kohli had earlier suggested that doors would open for off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin only if Washington Sundar’s performances dipped drastically. Now that Washington Sundar has been ruled out of at least IPL 2021 with a finger injury, there was a slot up for grabs.

RCB will be without their allrounder Washington Sundar for the UAE leg of IPL 2021 after he failed to fully recover from a finger injury. Washington Sundar had sustained the injury in the UK last month which ruled him out of the ongoing Test series between India and England as well.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both highlighted how Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of the toughest spinners to hit in the IPL over the last two years. The slow pitches in the UAE also played a major part in the decision.

Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians Saw More Cricketers In 2021 T20I World Cup Squad Than Any Other Franchise

There’s a theory within the Indian cricket board (BCCI) that Rohit Sharma, who captains Mumbai Indians in the IPL, needs to be given a larger role when it comes to the leadership group in white-ball cricket. There seems to be a growing imprint of the Mumbai Indians brand of cricket in Team India, just like there was a Chennai Super Kings imprint a few years ago.

The selectors went in favour of Mumbai Indians players while deciding between two players for one spot. Ishan Kishan was up against the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw and Sanju Samson. Even Rahul Chahar won the battle of leg-spinners as the seasoned Yuzvendra Chahal fell behind.

Ishan Kishan’s ability to float around the batting order and his wicketkeeping skills were highlighted by chief selector Chetan Sharma on Wednesday. What he didn’t mention is that these fresh faces from the Mumbai Indians stable are more used to winning the big moments that help a team prevail in a tournament.

After dominating IPL, Mumbai Indians have now started to dominate international cricket. As many as six players have made it to India’s T20 World Cup squad. Besides Rohit Sharma, Rahul Chahar, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Jasprit Bumrah have made it to the 15-man squad.

‘Unorthodox’ Suryakumar Yadav Is A Completely Different Class As Compared To Shreyas Iyer, Says Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir believes Suryakumar Yadav is in a different league as a T20 batsman compared to Shreyas Iyer. Suryakumar Yadav is part of India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Another middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, is part of the three standbys named in India’s squad for T20I WC alongside pacers Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur.

Following a long wait, Suryakumar Yadav made an excellent start to his international career. He was the Player of the Series in the ODIs against Sri Lanka and scored a half-century in India’s win in the first T20I as well. In his brief international career, the 30-year-old middle-order batsman has played 3 ODIs where he amassed 124 runs averaging 62 and 4 T20Is where he amassed 139 runs averaging 46.33.

Gautam Gambhir: ‘UnOrthodox’ Suryakumar Yadav Is A Completely Different Class As Compared To Shreyas Iyer

During a discussion on the Star Sports show Follow the Blues, Gautam Gambhir was asked about the two batsmen. The question posed was whether it was Shreyas Iyer’s injury or the range and temperament that Suryakumar Yadav has shown that has helped the latter pip the former to the post.

“Suryakumar Yadav is a completely different class as compared to Shreyas Iyer. He is much more versatile. He is much more unorthodox as well and in T20 cricket you want people who are unorthodox.”

The former India opener added that the middle-order batsman 30-year-old Suryakumar Yadav has a full array of shots at his disposal.

“You want people who can hit that ball in different areas. He can lap you, he can late cut you, he can hit you over extra cover, he has got all the shots, especially at No.4.”

Suryakumar Yadav has set the stage alight in the four T20Is he has played for Team India. He has smashed 139 runs at a strike rate of 169.51 and has hit two fifties in three innings.

Gautam Gambhir: No. 4 Is The Most Tricky Position To Bat In T20Is

Gautam Gambhir highlighted that Suryakumar Yadav can adjust his game to the demands of the situation.

“Sometimes, No.4 is the most tricky position to bat in T20 cricket. Probably the easiest is the top three but No.4, sometimes you might be in when you have lost two early wickets and sometimes you come into the middle when you are 120/2 and then you have got to continue with that momentum. So, Surya has got both kinds of game which probably Shreyas Iyer doesn’t have,” said Gautam Gambhir.

The 39-year-old acknowledged that Shreyas Iyer having recovered recently from a serious injury, could also have played a role in his omission from the 15 member squad.

Gautam Gambhir said: “You have also got to be mindful that he is coming off a serious injury and you never know what kind of a form he would be in the second leg of the IPL as well. So, they have gone with someone who has done really well since he has got into international cricket.”

The Indian selectors could have opted to keep both Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer in the 15-man member squad, with the latter coming in at the expense of probably Ishan Kishan or a spinner. However, they may have refrained from going that route due to question marks over Shreyas Iyer’s fitness.

Shreyas Iyer has played 29 T20Is where he amassed 550 runs averaging a modest 28.94 with 3 fifties apart from 22 ODIs where he managed 813 runs averaging 42.78. His last T20I and ODI appearance came against England at home in March 2021 where he injured himself.

Ravichandran Ashwin made a comeback after playing his last T20I in 2017 while the likes of Krunal Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t find a place in the squad.

Full squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami; Stand-by: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur

Sunil Gavaskar Picks His 15-Man India Squad For 2021 T20I World Cup

Sunil Gavaskar has named his 15-man roster for the showpiece event ahead of the official announcement of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2021.

Indian cricket lovers are holding on to their nerves, awaiting the selection committee’s announcement of the 15-man squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2021. While fans have had their discussions over who deserves a spot in the team and who doesn’t, the experts are also weighing in. India legend Sunil Gavaskar also picked his 15-man squad for the showpiece event ahead of the official announcement.

Sunil Gavaskar Picks Krunal Pandya And Injured Washington Sundar In His 15 Man Squad For The Upcoming 2021 T20I World cup

Sunil Gavaskar surprisingly left out two stalwarts of Indian cricket in the form of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer. While Shikhar Dhawan has been one of India’s most important batsmen in ICC events, Shreyas Iyer made the No. 4 position in white-ball cricket his own with some really responsible outings in the last couple of years.

Instead, Sunil Gavaskar put his confidence in spin-bowling all-rounder Krunal Pandya.

“He’s an all-rounder, a very experienced player, has performed very well in the IPL for the past many years so he surely deserves a place. He’s left-handed, which is an advantage as well,” he said over the selection of the elder of the Pandya brothers.

Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar — two spin bowling all-rounders — made the cut in Sunil Gavaskar’s team though there isn’t much clarity on the selection of Washington Sundar because of his injury.

Washington Sundar, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL, had traveled to England with the Indian Test squad but returned to the country after injuring his finger while playing in a County game that served as a practice game for the visitors. He was ruled out from the Test series against England and the UAE leg of IPL 2021.

The T20I World cup 2021 is slated to begin immediately after the conclusion of the IPL and it remains to be seen if Washington Sundar is picked in the Indian squad without playing a single IPL game.

Sunil Gavaskar Picks Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, And Bhuvneshwar Kumar Alongside Deepak Chahar And Shardul Thakur As Pacers

In terms of pacers, the original Little Master went with the experienced trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar while Chennai Super Kings duo of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur also received his nod. Yuzvendra Chahal was the only specialist spinner selected in the 15-man team by Sunil Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar’s India squad for T20 World Cup 2021: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar (subject to fitness), Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Yuzvendra Chahal.

It also has to be noted that a total of 18 players will be picked for the showpiece event, including three reserves. The official announcement of the squad is expected to be made on Wednesday (September 08).

STANDBYS

Rahul Chahar/ Varun Chakravarthy: It could be a toss-up between the Mumbai Indians’ leg-spinner and Varun Chakravarthy, KKR’s mystery spinner.

Prithvi Shaw/Shikhar Dhawan: The choice could be between Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. The flamboyant Mumbai opener has shown he could get into the fifth gear quicker than Shikhar Dhawan as he scored the most runs ever in the 50 overs domestic tournament Vijay Hazare Trophy. But Shikhar Dhawan, his DC teammate posted the most runs in IPL 2021 so far.

Mohammed Siraj/Mohammed Shami: While Mohammed Siraj is in red-hot form, he is yet to establish himself as a T20 bowler. Mohammed Shami’s experience and wicket-taking ability could give him an edge.

Axar Patel: Like-for-like backup for spinner all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Washington Sundar: His selection is subject to recovery from a finger injury.

Frederique Overdijk Bagged 7 Wickets In Her 4 Overs Conceding Only 3 Runs To Restrict France To 33 Runs

On Thursday, Frederique Overdijk bagged seven wickets in her four overs and conceded just three runs to restrict France to 33 runs in 17.5 overs in the women’s T20 World Cup Europe qualifiers at the La Manga Club Ground in Cartagena, Spain. The Netherlands then cruised to a nine-wicket victory in 3.4 overs.

Frederique Overdijk had six bowled dismissals and one lbw in her four overs. Out of the four overs, two were maidens. It was the first time any bowler, male or female, had taken a seven-wicket haul in T20Is. Frederique Overdijk went past the previous record held by Nepal’s Anjali Chand, who scalped six wickets for zero runs against the Maldives in 2019.

Brief scores: France 33 in 17.3 overs (Poppy McGeown 8, Frederique Overdijk 7/3, Eva Lynch 1/3) lost to the Netherlands 33/1 in 3.4 overs (Robine Rijke 21 not out, Babette de Leede 10, Thea Graham 1/11) by nine wickets.

She dismissed the opposition skipper Tara Britton, Poppy McGeown, Thea Graham, Emmanuelle Brelivet, Tracy Rodriguez, Emma Chance, and Maelle Cargouet en route to the world record. France was restricted to a paltry total of 33 runs in 17.5 overs, which The Netherlands side chased down quickly in 3.3 overs.

Frederique Overdijk went past the previous record held by Nepal’s Anjali Chand, who snapped six wickets for zero runs in 2.1 overs against the Maldives a couple of years ago. It was only the 8th T20I match for the youngster. She has managed to pick a total of 11 wickets to her name, at the bowling average of 14.00, in her two-year career so far.

Gaby Lewis Becomes The First Ireland Women’s Player To Score A T20I Ton

On the first day of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, Netherlands’ Frederique Overdijk grabbed all the headlines for her record-breaking spell of 4-2-3-7, the best figures in the T20I history. The magnificent spell reduced France to just 33 runs as they were bowled out in 17.3 overs. The Netherlands chased down the total in under four overs to register their first win of the day.

Earlier in the day, the Dutch fell short against Scotland after they could only put up 98 runs in their quota of 20 overs batting first. Despite losing their way towards the end, opener Sarah Bryce’s 36-ball 46 ensured that Scotland got across the line with more than three overs to spare.

In the second match of the day, Gaby Lewis stole the show with an unbeaten 60-ball 105* against Germany and became the first Ireland Women’s player to score a T20I century. Chasing 197 was always going to be a tough ask for the German players as they finished the innings with just 32 runs, falling short by a massive margin of 164 runs.

In men’s cricket, five bowlers have taken six wickets in T20I innings; India’s Deepak Chahar has the best bowling figure amongst those- 6/7 in 3.2 overs against Bangladesh in Nagpur in November 2019. That terrific bowling performance included a hat-trick as Bangladesh collapsed from 110/2 in the 13th over to be bowled out for 144.

Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis is behind Deepak Chahar with two six-wicket innings hauls, followed by India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Australia’s left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.

Kyle Jamieson Reflects On Experience Of Playing For RCB Under Virat Kohli In IPL 2021

Kyle Jamieson, New Zealand, and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) all-rounder reflected on his experience of playing for the franchise under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He lauded the skipper for his fierce nature on the field and for being a welcoming person off it.

After making a huge impression in the international arena during his short career so far, Kyle Jamieson landed a contract with the RCB for the 2021 season of the IPL.

Kyle Jamieson: Virat Kohli Is Quite Intense And Fierce On The Field But Off It, He Is Nice And Welcoming

While speaking on Baz and Izzy for BreakfastKyle Jamieson commended Virat Kohli for his passion for winning.

“He is a lovely guy. I have played against him a couple of times and obviously, he is quite intense and quite fierce in the field, but off the park, he is so nice and welcoming. He just loves to win as well. He could be at it on the field and stuff, but he is just passionate about being there, about winning,” Jamieson said.

The pacer will be part of the IPL that restarts on September 19 in the UAE. The tournament was postponed on May 4 following the rise of COVID-19 cases in India and bio bubble breaches. Kyle Jamieson was RCB’s most expensive buy in the 2021 auction. He was picked up for a whopping Rs. 15 crores and was the second-most expensive purchase of the auction. The Kiwi bowler is keen on adapting and developing his skillset when the IPL 2021 resumes.

Kyle Jamieson Feels Its Fortunate To Be Involved In A Tournament Like IPL

The 26-year-old was also pleased with the opportunity to play in one of the biggest tournaments in cricket. Kyle Jamieson picked up nine wickets in seven games for RCB in the first half of IPL 2021 averaging 24.55 besides scoring 59 runs.

“It’s good to see how different guys work. We have got some good overseas players in our group. So, yes, pretty fortunate to be involved in a tournament like that.”

Glenn Maxwell

Kyle Jamieson shared his disappointment about not getting to travel and see places in India. He recollected how the country was under lockdown during the time he was in India for the first leg of the IPL.

“India was under lockdown when I was there. So we were pretty much in bubbles. I kind of missed out on that experience which is a shame. Hopefully, once this thing gets down, I can get back there and get a taste of what it’s really like,” Jamieson added.

The Black Caps all-rounder will travel to the UAE and join RCB for the second leg of the IPL 2021 scheduled to commence from September 19. RCB made a great start to the latest edition of the IPL, winning five of their seven games. They were third in the points table behind the Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings when the season was suspended back in early May.

Their IPL 2021 campaign was bolstered by the arrival of Glenn Maxwell and Kyle Jamieson. Both players positively impacted their batting and bowling fronts, respectively. RCB will be hoping for their stars to continue in the same vein when the remainder of the IPL resumes in the UAE.

Royal Challengers Bangalore consists of few powerful domestic players in the current squad like Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Washington Sundar, Mohammad Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Navdeep Saini. Among the overseas players, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, and Kyle Jamieson are among few popular members of the team.

Royal Challengers Bangalore is a powerful team in the Indian Premier League that has made it to the finals on three occasions- IPL 2009, IPL 2011, and IPL 2016. But unfortunately, the Virat Kohli-led side ended up as runners-up in all these seasons.

RCBhas signed the Sri Lanka duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera for the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise has also signed Singapore batsman Tim David who keeps impressing in the other global T20 leagues with his hitting prowess. The shuffle in the RCB squad comes after Australia players Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson, and Daniel Sams have decided not to travel for the IPL.
