Rohit Sharma Should Lead India Across All Formats: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir is of the firm view that the Indian cricket team should have one captain across formats and in his view, Rohit Sharma should lead India across all formats.

Rohit Sharma took over the T20I captaincy from Virat Kohli following India’s T20I World Cup 2021 unceremonious exit and later replaced him as captain in the 50-over format as well. KL Rahul led India in the second South Africa Test after Virat Kohli missed the match due to injury. KL Rahul is also leading India in the three one-day matches in South Africa after Rohit Sharma failed to recover from an injury, missing both Test and ODI series.

Gautam Gambhir: Rohit Sharma Should Lead India Across All Formats As One Captain Will Ensure Consistency

Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain is recovering well from his left hamstring injury and has a bright chance of making a comeback for the six-match home limited-overs series against the West Indies next month. Rohit Sharma, who was also the designated Test vice-captain for the tour of South Africa, sustained a left hamstring strain during a net session just prior to the team’s departure for the tour and had to pull out from both Test and ODI matches.

In his column, Gautam Gambhir wrote, “In my book, Rohit Sharma should lead India across all formats with Rahul as his deputy. One captain across formats will ensure consistency in style and approach of the Indian team especially considering that we have another T20 World Cup later this year.”

On Saturday, Virat Kohli stepped down as India captain following the team’s 1-2 series loss in South Africa. With 40 wins and 17 losses in 68 Tests as captain, Virat Kohli is India’s most successful Test leader.

“Between the last Test and ODI series, the news space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy. I think it is an individual’s call and that is how it should be treated. I think Virat left the Indian Test team is good health but I can’t say the same about white-ball cricket,” Gautam Gambhir added.

“Our bowling resources in Test matches are a neighbour’s envy and owner’s pride. They have showed time and again that they are the engine room for a team’s performance. In limited overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order, which Virat could not create,” Gautam Gambhir added.

Rohit Sharma, who was named ODI captain earlier this month replacing Virat Kohli, was to travel to South Africa as vice-captain for the Test series which began on December 26 but a hamstring injury during training ruled him out. He had taken charge as T20I captain against New Zealand last month.

Gautam Gambhir Hopes Shikhar Dhawan Is Included In The ODI XI Against Proteas

On the ODI series starting on Wednesday 19th January, Gautam Gambhir hoped that opener Shikhar Dhawan is not left out from India playing XI.

“Shikhar Dhawan is a sensation on social media. He has close to 10 million followers on Instagram alone, which is almost ten times more than the population of Gurugram where he now lives. I’d recommend that there is something for everyone on his Insta handle. There are fitness videos, dancing videos with his mother, dubsmash videos and there is also a video where Shikhar is playing the flute with perhaps his Guru,” Gautam Gambhir observed.

Not in the scheme of things in any other format, this series may be the last chance for Shikhar Dhawan to salvage his ODI career. Shikhar Dhawan has been an enigma. Over 6000 ODI runs with 17 centuries at an average of 45. 55 while striking at 93. 79 are enviable numbers.  He has not played in India colours since leading a second-string team on a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July last year.

“Trust me, it’s an absolute delight, all notes are in proper place just like a perfectly struck left-hander’s cover drive with the bat finishing on his right shoulder. How good it will be to see him translate his social media form on the playing field. It is a grand opportunity for him in South Africa. I am not a great believer in age and all that,” Gautam Gambhir added.

“His critics are saying that at 36, Indian cricket should look beyond Shikhar. My worry is the lack of runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. I hope he can put it all behind him and put his best foot forward. There is a school of thought that Shikhar should not be played in the final eleven. I think that will be a disaster. Why would you take Shikhar to South Africa and then leave him on the bench? It will make no sense at all,” Gautam Gambhir opined.

Calling for the inclusion of both Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing XI, Gautam Gambhir wrote that he would be looking forward to the performance of Prasidh Krishna on the bouncy pitches of South Africa in the ODI series.

“After KL Rahul, Shikhar, and Virat Kohli, India should continue to play Surya Kumar Yadav at No. 4, Shreyas Iyer at No. 5, Rishabh Pant at 6. I am extremely inclined to use the experience of R Ashwin in my bowling department with Chahal being the other spinner.”

“Fast bowling duties need to be performed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, and Jasprit Bumrah. I’d be keen to see how Prasidh goes on the bouncy tracks of South Africa. He has conditions in his favour, let’s see if he can translate promise into performance,” Gautam Gambhir signed off.

Prasidh Krishna has impressed one and all in his short international career with his ability to regularly touch 140 kmph. Prasidh Krishna made his ODI debut against England and picked up 4 wickets on debut. He ended with figures of 4/54 in 8 overs and broke the Indian record for most wickets in an ODI debut.

SA vs IND Stats Preview: India tour of South Africa 2021-22, First ODI

As India and South Africa are all set to play to lock horns for the 3-match ODI series, let’s look at some relevant numbers.

Virat Kohli not as captain?:

Tomorrow as the Indian team takes the field under the leadership of KL Rahul, it will be quite odd to see Virat Kohli walking out in the field without the captaincy duties. The last time he played an international game, was in an ODI game against New Zealand at Vishakhapatnam on October 29, 2016. Since then he played 179 games (51 Tests, 78 ODIs, and 50 T20Is) for India and he captained each of them.

Captain KL Rahul:

As KL Rahul will walk out for the toss, he will become the 26th player to lead India in ODI cricket. It’s the second consecutive ODI series in which India will get a new captain. Last year when India travelled to Sri Lanka, Shikhar Dhawan was given captaincy duties as all test members were in England for 5-match series.

Head-to-head:

So far India and South Africa faced each other in 84 ODIs. The Proteas lead the head-to-head record with 46 wins while India won 35 games, three other games ended in a no result. At home, South Africa leads the head-to-head battle comprehensively with a 22-10 margin. However, this will be the first clash between the two sides at Boland Park, Paarl.

India previously played 3 games at this ground. While they beat Kenya and Netherlands but the game ended in a tie against Zimbabwe in 1997. South Africa played 7 ODIs here and they won 6 of them as their only loss was against New Zealand when the visitors beat them by 1 wicket in a low-scoring thriller in 2013.

India eyes Consecutive Series win:

Unlike in Test matches, India had already broken the jinx of the ODI series win in the rainbow nation in the last tour as they beat the Proteas by 5-1 in the 6-match series. It’s the only series win for India in 5 attempts as the hosts got the better of India on all other 4 occasions.

India also played two triangular series in South Africa and on both occasions they lost the final against the home side.

100 ODI wickets for Chahal?

Yuzvendra Chahal needs another 3 wickets to reach the milestone of 100 wickets. If he reaches the milestone in tomorrow’s match, he will be the quickest Indian spinner to reach it. Kuldeep Yadav completed 100 ODI wickets in 58 games. Currently, Chahal picked 97 wickets in 56 ODIs with an economy of 5.20 which included 2 fifers.

In the last South Africa tour, he had a phenomenal success along with Kuldeep Yadav as he picked 16 wickets in 6 games with one fifer.

Washington Sundar Tests Covid-19 Positive And Unlikely To Feature In ODI Series Against South Africa

Washington Sundar has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now a doubtful starter for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting January 19.

The 22-year-old spinner was to travel to Cape Town from Mumbai along with other members of the ODI squad but there is no clarity if he has even reached Mumbai.

Washington Sundar Tests Covid-19 Positive

An office-bearer confirmed that the 22-year-old tested positive a few days back and won’t travel to South Africa. Washington Sundar has been out of the action of international cricket for almost 10 months – he last played for India in March 2021 – because of injuries.

He recently recovered and was part of the Tamil Nadu squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy in which he did fairly well leading to his recall into the ODI squad. However, his international return may be temporarily scuppered because of the Covid infection.

“He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad.”

Washington Sundar made his India debut in an ODI back in 2017 against Sri Lanka at the tender age of 18. Although that game remains his only appearance in the 50-over format, the off-spinner has played 31 T20Is and 4 Tests since debuting in ODIs.

Jayant Yadav Asked To Stay Back

Meanwhile, according to BCCI sources, discussions are underway if a replacement can be organized. The selection committee has not yet met formally but chairman Chetan Sharma has been in touch with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah over this and a decision is expected by evening. The delay in the decision on the matter is because the BCCI top brass was occupied with the Governing Council meeting of the IPL.

The ODI squad, to be led by KL Rahul, has two other spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. After the first ODI in Paarl on January 19, India will play the second match, also in Paarl, on January 21 and round off the six-match tour with the third ODI at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on January 23.

Jayant Yadav will stay back in South Africa for the three-match ODI series. Jayant Yadav will be part of the ODI team as a replacement for Washington Sundar who has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure. The rest of the players selected for the ODIs, (Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Prasidh Krishna) departed for Cape Town on Wednesday morning.

With no Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel not available for the series due to injuries, there are concerns over the depth in the batting line-up. Washington’s ability to bat down the order was seen as the link between the middle-order and the lower order.

Jayant Yadav has a sound batting technique and is reliable down the order. He has a Test century against his name too. He is being seen as a like-for-like replacement for Washington Sundar

Harshal Patel Reveals Reason For Not Being Retained By RCB Before IPL 2022 Mega Auction

Harshal Patel wasn’t retained by RCB ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction despite leading the bowling charts in the previous IPL 2021. The franchise instead decided to keep Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj in the team.

Retention of players ahead of mega auction remains an incredibly tough task for Indian Premier League franchises. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) decided to keep hold of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj ahead of IPL 2022 auction, leaving out the likes of Harshal Patel, Devdutt Padikkal, and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Harshal Patel Reveals Reason For Not Being Retained By RCB Was To Better Manage Their Purse

While there’s no denying that the team management had to make some tough calls, Harshal Patel has now revealed why exactly was he let go by the team. In a chat, the seamer, who recently made his international debut, said that the decision was taken by the team in order to better manage their purse, going into the auction.

“When I was not retained, Mike Hesson (RCB’s Director of Cricket) called me and said, that it was mainly purse management,” Harshal Patel said.

Speaking of his future ambitions, the Haryana-born medium-pacer confirmed that he would love to continue his career at RCB. When it comes to other franchises, Harshal Patel also said that he hasn’t been approached by anyone in particular.

“They would obviously love to have me back in the team and I too would obviously would love to go back and play for the team because RCB and this season (2021) changed my entire career and my entire life. However, in terms of auction, I haven’t heard from any franchises yet,” he added.

Harshal Patel picked up as many as 32 wickets in 15 games, making him the highest Indian wicket-taker in a single season and joint-most with Dwayne Bravo. Harshal Patel was able to bag 32 wickets in just 15 IPL 2021 games at an average of 14.34, an economy of 8.14, and a strike rate of 10.56.

His best bowling figure in IPL 2021 was 5/27. Harshal Patel won the Gamechanger of the season, Most Valuable Player of the season, and Purple Cap award during his sensational run.

Harshal Patel Didn’t Get Star Struck But Admired Great Teammates Like Virat Kohli And AB de Villiers

Harshal Patel was also asked about the feeling of sharing the dressing room with greats like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers at RCB. Responding to the query, the 30-year-old said that he has never been star-struck by the presence of such players, even during the early days of his carer.

“It’s pretty normal, to be honest. I don’t get star-struck. Even I remember my first year in IPL, I was never star-struck.

“I just admire them for what they bring onto the field, the kind of people they are, the level of skill they have, and their ability to stand up in pressure situations and say: ‘I am going to bring the team out of this difficult situation.’ That’s what I have learned from those two guys,” he answered.

Harshal Patel is expected to be on the radar of many franchises in the upcoming mega-auction. Having ended the 2021 season as the highest wicket-taker, the Haryana lad is likely to trigger a big bidding war.

Harshal Patel won player of the match for his figures of 2/25, besides giving away just 16 runs in his last two overs in the 17th and 19th and taking the wicket of the dangerous Glenn Phillips in that period as India beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the second T20I. He picked 4 wickets in 2 T20Is, both coming against New Zealand but he was ignored for the South African tour with India’s regular pacers making comebacks.

Chetan Sharma Praised Ruturaj Gaikwad And Hopes He Does Wonders For India

Chetan Sharma, the chief selector has heaped praise on in-form opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been selected for the upcoming ODIs against South Africa, saying that the Maharashtra batter would “do wonders” for the national Indian team.

The Indian team is scheduled to play three one-day internationals against South Africa on January 19, 21, and 23 at Paarl and Cape Town respectively.

Chetan Sharma: Ruturaj Gaikwad Has Got The Opportunity At The Right Time

The team for the ODIs against Proteas was picked on Friday by the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel.

“Look, absolutely (he has) got the opportunity at the right time. He was in the T20 team and also now he is in the ODI team, wherever his place can be made, selectors are thinking he will go and do wonders for the country,” Chetan Sharma said at the team selection press conference.

The 24-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad, who hails from Pune, was the leading scorer in the 2021 Indian Premier League after he amassed a staggering 635 runs and played a key role in Chennai Super Kings winning the title. He was the Orange Cap winner for scoring the most runs in IPL 2021 ahead of teammate fellow opener Faf du Plessis.

Chetan Sharma: Ruturaj Gaikwad Was Rewarded For Doing Well

According to Chetan Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad was rewarded for his stellar performance. He has so far played 2 T20Is scorings 35 runs. Both matches came against and in Sri Lanka.

“We have selected him (Ruturaj). Now it is up to the (team) management to see when he can play in the XI, when he is required and how to go about the combination, these things we will coordinate. But, at present, he (Ruturaj) was in the T20 side also against New Zealand and he is in ODI now. He is doing well and he is rewarded for that,” added Sharma, himself a former India pacer.

After his IPL high, the opener continued his dazzling form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy too and was the leading scorer there, aggregating 603 runs from five matches with 168 as his highest score. Ruturaj Gaikwad hit his fourth hundred of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021/22 to equal the record of most centuries in a single season of India’s premier domestic 50-over competition.

KL Rahul has been named as captain for the ODI series as Rohit Sharma is ruled out owing to an injury. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will be vice-captain for the series. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been rested while Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja remain unfit.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has roared back into the limited-overs format and has been picked in the ODI side for the first time since 2017. He last played for India in the format in June 2017 in West Indies but fell out of favour as the wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were preferred ahead of him.

Spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has been recovering from a finger injury he sustained in July last year and since then he has not played international cricket. The year 2022 will see him restart with the ODI series against the Proteas.

Yuzvendra Chahal Feels There Is No Substitute For Hard Work And Wants To Do Well Under Rohit Sharma

Yuzvendra Chahal has overcome the disappointment of being ignored for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite having a fairly impressive IPL 2021 season for RCB. Now, he wants to focus on what lies ahead and make the most of the chances, not dwelling too much on the past.

Besides, the World Cup shock omission, he wasn’t retained by his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the mega auction in IPL 2022. But Yuzvendra Chahal is unperturbed and is focused on the immediate challenge – performing for his domestic team Haryana in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Yuzvendra Chahal: There Is No Substitute For Hard Work

Immediately after India’s disappointing outing in the World Cup, Yuzvendra Chahal was called back for the home T20I series against New Zealand but played only one T20I. A week later, the leg-spinner got another setback as Royal Challengers Bangalore decided not to retain him despite him being one of RCB’s top performers with the ball in the last eight seasons.

“I am looking to do well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and help Haryana win the title,” Chahal said. “I am bowling well in the nets and enjoying my bowling. There is no substitute for hard work. Whatever has happened has happened. After a gap of one year this time Ranji Trophy is also going to take place. I want to make most of the chances.”

RCB retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj in the IPL retention that took place on Tuesday. Yuzvendra Chahal, who had been a part of the franchise since 2014, was released. Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion comes as a huge surprise to RCB fans. The leg-spinner has been the leader of Bangalore’s bowling attack for a good five to six years now.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the only RCB bowler to claim more than 100 IPL wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal has thus far featured in 114 IPL games, claiming 139 wickets at an average of 22.28 and an economy rate of 7.59-all for RCB.

Yuzvendra Chahal Is Looking Forward To Doing Well Under Skipper Rohit Sharma And Coach Rahul Dravid

Yuzvendra Chahal, who has taken 161 wickets at the international stage, says the support of his family helped him deal with the phase that followed after he learned of him not being picked in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup in UAE. In his international career thus far, the 30-year old has bagged 97 and 64 wickets in 56 ODIs and 50 T20Is, respectively apart from 139 scalps in 114 IPL games.

Yuzvendra Chahal picked a wicket, that of New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, on his return to XI, conceding 26 runs in four overs as India beat New Zealand by 73 runs in the final inconsequential T20I against New Zealand and register a 3-0 whitewash at home.

“It was disappointing to lose a spot in the Indian team for a mega-event like the World Cup,” Chahal said.

“I think I did reasonably well in the IPL and in the series against Sri Lanka. But that’s part of a sportsperson’s life. I was eyeing the World Cup since the time it was postponed. Nevertheless, I got great support from my family to overcome that disappointment. It was wonderful to get into the India dressing room against New Zealand.”

Yuzvendra Chahal though returned to the India setup with the three-match T20I series against New Zealand last month. With Rohit Sharma taking over as the new India T20I captain from Virat Kohli, the legspinner is hoping to continue the good work under the new skipper and new coach Rahul Dravid.

“I have done well under Virat (Kohli) and hope to keep doing well under Rohit’s (Sharma) captaincy in the T20 format. I have played with Rahul Dravid as coach while being in the India A team. He is a great coach with an intelligent cricket mind. Then there is Paras Mhambrey also now as bowling coach. I held discussions with him on my bowling. His inputs would definitely benefit me,” Yuzvendra Chahal said.

Yuzvendra Chahal picked only four wickets in seven games in the India leg of the 2021 Indian Premier League, at an economy rate of 8.26, which saw him fall out of contention for the race to the T20 World Cup squad, to Rahul Chahar, who snared 11 wickets in as many games(7 IPL games) at an economy rate of 7.21.

However, the RCB leg spinner made an impressive comeback in the second leg, picking 14 wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 7.06. At the same time, Mumbai Indians’ Rahul Chahar struggled immensely, managing only two wickets in four games at an economy rate of 7.73.

Yuzvendra Chahal May Earn Big Bucks During IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Laxman Sivaramakrishnan

Yuzvendra Chahal is at a strange point in his career. Not too long ago, he was India’s premier spinner in white-ball cricket, but that soon changed when he was not included in India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2021 despite the team taking five spin-bowling options with them to the UAE.

Yuzvendra Chahal May End Up Getting More Money For Being In IPL 2022 Auction Pool Instead Of Being Retained By RCB: Laxman Sivaramakrishnan

Former India cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, however, feels not all is lost for Yuzvendra Chahal. The former leg-spinner, in fact, is of the opinion that Yuzvendra Chahal might actually end up getting big bucks at the auction.

RCB retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj in the IPL retention that took place on Tuesday. Yuzvendra Chahal, who had been a part of the franchise since 2014, was released. However, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said RCB would want the leg-spinner back in the fold during the mega auction ahead of IPL 2022.

“RCB would want to buy him back. The other teams would want Chahal in their side because of his exceptional record in the IPL. The people who have more money will have the luxury of going for Chahal.

‘In the end, Chahal might end up getting more money for being in the auction than by being retained,” Sivaramakrishnan told NDTV during a media interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who is in the commentary panel for the Ashes, gave an example of the bidding war for Ravichandran Ashwin between RCB and CSK to explain how other franchises might increase the price of Yuzvendra Chahal if RCB desperately wants him back in the side.

“I remember how RCB was raising the paddle seeing CSK going hard for Ashwin. If RCB want Chahal then the other teams might just bid to ensure he costs more to them. So, in the end, Chahal might end up being benefitted,” Sivaramakrishnan added.

The likes of George Garton, Navdeep Saini, Dushmantha Chameera, Tim David, Shahbaz Ahmad, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dan Christian, and retired AB de Villiers were released by Royal Challengers Bangalore before IPL 2022 mega auctions.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan Said More Indian Payers Being Retained Means They Will Form The Core

Unlike past retentions, only eight overseas players were retained by the teams this time around, while the number of retained Indian players was 19. Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said it was a good sign for Indian cricket.

“The overseas players not being retained are a sign that the Indian players are good enough. And the Indian players is what we really need to look at. The foreign players might make a fortune but the Indian players will form the core,” he added.

David Warner
David Warner[photo: Twitter]
Asked whether the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer will be dejected for not being retained by their respective IPL franchises, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said they would be focused on the Ashes, starting on December 8.

“Playing for the country is first and foremost. Your ambition as a young cricketer is not to play in IPL but to play for the country. There was no IPL when Ben Stokes or Steve Smith started to play.

“So, their aim would always have been to play for England and Australia. There are two ways to look at IPL retention. Firstly, the players who have already been retained will feel a sense of security. The players who have not been retained also have opportunity,” he signed off.

Many of the big-ticket players, including MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Glenn Maxwell, were retained. But the list of players released and going back into the auction pool is a long one.

Likes of Rashid Khan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Deepak Chahar were released by their respective franchises.

Rashid Khan And KL Rahul Not Retained By Their Respective Franchises For IPL 2022; Reasons Revealed

Rashid Khan – the Afghan leg spinner who was not retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings who couldn’t retain keeper-batsman KL Rahul were two of the major talking points coming out of Tuesday evening retentions ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Both non-retentions have much more to them than what meets the eye.

Having to release Rashid Khan, one of the leading bowlers in the T20 format, was indeed a difficult negotiation. As one franchisee insider said, letting go of Rashid Khan is akin to Royal Challengers Bangalore releasing Virat Kohli, or Mumbai Indians releasing Rohit Sharma. However, it didn’t seem this straightforward when agents from both parties were involved in an intense war of price tags.

Rashid Khan Wanted To Get Back Into The Auction Pool: SRH CEO

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) announced the 3 retentions shockingly ahead of IPL 2022, with Rashid Khan not being retained. The ace leg-spinner from Afghanistan has decided to move into the player auction instead of being retained by the IPL 2016 champions.

SRH has retained New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson as their skipper. Uncapped youngsters Abdul Samad and Umran Malik, too, have been retained by the franchise.

Rashid Khan has been SRH’s best bowler since joining the team back in 2017. His numbers in the IPL stand at a staggering 93 wickets from 76 games at an astonishing economy rate of 6.33.

Announcing SRH’s retention list on Star Sports, the franchise’s CEO K Shanmugam mentioned that Rashid Khan was a part of their plans. However, Mr. K Shanmugam stated that it was the player’s choice to get back into the auction pool. The decision was respected and acknowledged by the franchise.

Mr K Shanmugam said: “It’s a difficult decision but if a player wants to be in the auction because of the price, we definitely respect the decision. We will try and match him in (terms of) the price and see if we can pick him up in the auction”.

Rashid Khan’s prowess in the T20 format is not unknown. However, he remains one of only four players to have scalped 400 or more wickets. Hence, a bidding war is expected for him in the IPL player auction. This, of course, provided none of the two new teams from Lucknow or Ahmedabad pick Rashid Khan up in a draft prior to the auction.

As previously reported, the SRH team, which had first bought Rashid Khan in the 2017 auction for Rs 4 crore and then used the Right To Match (RTM) card in the 2018 mega auction, wanted to keep the spinner as their No 2 retention. However, it would have meant that Rashid Khan would be entitled to a fee of Rs 11 crore, which is Rs 2 crore more than his current salary.

After initially refusing to be the second retention, Rashid Khan apparently relented but later reneged. SRH says they still have a good equation with the player but not as much with a London-based agent who was playing hardball with the franchise.

The franchise might not have heard back from Rashid Khan after that, but they still hope to buy him in the auction – that is, if one of the two new teams, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, doesn’t rope him in first.

KL Rahul Was Tried To Be Retained By Punjab Kings, But He Wanted To Go Into The IPL 2022 Auction: Ness Wadia

PBKS, in turn, failed to hold on to KL Rahul, whom they had appointed captain keeping long-term goals in mind. The franchise co-owner Ness Wadia did not hide his disappointment.

“He was our captain, we tried our best (to retain Rahul). We wanted him to stay but he wanted to go into the auction. He had different plans,” Wadia said on Tuesday night (November 30).

KL Rahul is understood to be headed for Lucknow.

“We have retained Mayank and Arshdeep who were part of our strategy. In terms of bowling, we are confident Arshdeep will represent India soon. It is too early to say if Mayank will be captain but he is a talented and committed player.

“Our first step was the retention and we will decide what is best for the franchise in terms of captaincy,” Wadia said adding, “Punjab Kings have not done as well as it should have done. We have plans for the next season to ensure better performance. Whatever we need to do we will do to improve and we are looking forward to having a right balance for the side.”

Elsewhere, it was a surprise that Royal Challengers Bangalore left out Yuzvendra Chahal, one of the most consistent performers for the franchise over the years. It is learned that Yuzvendra Chahal may not have agreed to be the No 3 retention, which would have entitled him to only Rs 7 crore. A bigger amount at the auction table is surely a possibility, for which he left RCB.

One of the most expected retentions was of Venkatesh Iyer by Kolkata Knight Riders who, in a span of two months, became an elite player after performing well in the UAE leg of IPL 2021, managing 370 runs which led to his maiden India call-up. The absence of England’s Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer from the Rajasthan Royals’ list. Kumar Sangakkara strove to explain a part of it, saying Jofra Archer’s fitness was an issue.

Tuesday (November 30) saw pre-existing IPL franchises announce their list of retained players ahead of the 2022 season. The usual suspects Rohit Sharma of MI, Virat Kohli of RCB, and MS Dhoni of CSK have all been retained by their teams.
It is worth noting that both Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have taken a pay cut in comparison to the previous three-year cycle. Virat Kohli will now draw INR 15 crore, as opposed to INR 17 crore earlier. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni’s salary is now INR 12 crore, having drawn INR 15 crore before.
Ravindra Jadeja has been retained by defending champions CSK as their highest-paid player at INR 16 crore. Some of the most notable Indian names to have not been retained by their teams include Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and Hardik Pandya.

Yuzvendra Chahal Who Wasn’t Retained By RCB For IPL 2022 Expressed Gratitude To RCB For Overwhelming Support

Yuzvendra Chahal, the Indian leg-spinner, expressed his gratitude towards the franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore for their support over the years. His reaction came after he wasn’t retained on Tuesday by the franchise ahead of the mega auction.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore, just like other franchises, announced their retained players list on Tuesday night. As was widely expected, the 2016 runners-up have retained former skipper Virat Kohli, Australian swashbuckler Glenn Maxwell, and pacer Mohammed Siraj.

Yuzvendra Chahal Not Retained By Royal Challengers

Yuzvendra Chahal proceeded to comment on a video post where RCB revealed the names of players they’ve retained.

He wrote: “Thank you for everything @RCBTweets”

Virat Kohli is the first player retained by the franchise. He will fetch Rs 15 crore as opposed to Rs 17 Crore, which he was earning earlier. Glenn Maxwell is the second player to be retained for an annual retainer of Rs 11 crore.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj is the third pick at a sum of Rs 7 crore. As a result, the total purse remaining for the Bangalore franchise is Rs 57 Crore.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion comes as a huge surprise to RCB fans. The leg-spinner has been the leader of Bangalore’s bowling attack for a good five to six years now. Yuzvendra Chahal is the only RCB bowler to claim 100+ IPL wickets. Over the course of the last few years, he was the real Most Valuable Player for the franchise as far as bowling is concerned.

Glenn Maxwell was phenomenal with the bat in his first season for RCB as he ended up the season as their highest-run scorer with 513 runs from 14 innings at the strike rate of 144.10. In 2008, Virat Kohli was inducted into the RCB squad and started leading the side in the year 2013.

In the year 2016, he sat atop on the leading run-scorers list, thereby donning the Orange Cap at the end of the ninth edition of the league. He is the leading run-scorer in IPL history with over 6000 runs, (6283 runs) at an average of over 37 in 207 matches, all for RCB. In addition, he has 5 tons and 42 fifties.

Pace bowler Mohammed Siraj has also developed his skills and is progressing at RCB by not leaking enough runs. Mohammed Siraj has picked 11 wickets each time in the last two seasons. Virat Kohli (15 cr), Glenn Maxwell (11 cr), and Mohammed Siraj (7 cr) were retained.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Expressed Gratitude To Non-Retained Cricketers

According to media reports, negotiations over contract money between the management and Yuzvendra Chahal couldn’t come to fruition. However, following the release of the retention list, RCB social media handles expressed their gratitude towards players who have not been retained.

“The RCB management wholeheartedly thanks all the players who were a part of our 2021 squad for their unquestionable commitment to RCB and we sincerely hope this is not a goodbye, and our paths cross sooner than later,” they wrote.

With Yuzvendra Chahal back in the auction pool, it could lead to a bidding war between the franchises. The newly formed Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises are also set to randomly pick three players from the release pool.

Hence, the leg spinner could very well land up in either of these two teams. On the other hand, Yuzvendra Chahal has thus far featured in 114 IPL games, claiming 139 wickets at an average of 22.28 and an economy rate of 7.59-all for RCB.

The likes of George Garton, Navdeep Saini, Dushmantha Chameera, Tim David, Shahbaz Ahmad, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dan Christian, and retired AB de Villiers were released before IPL 2032 mega auctions.

IPL 2022: Lucknow And Ahmedabad To Sign 3 Players Before Mega Auction

IPL 2022 is set to witness the introduction of two new teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, who will now look to sign three players before the auction. The much-awaited list of retained players was unveiled on November 30 (Tuesday) ahead of the mega auction of the IPL 2022. The existing eight teams had to make some tough decisions and leave out some of their key players to abide by the rules in place.

All the released players from the existing eight teams now have a chance to play for Lucknow and Ahmedabad in the IPL 2022. However, the two franchises won’t be able to pick more than three players before IPL 2022 mega auctions. They can only sign a maximum of two Indian players and one foreign player.

IPL 2022 Will Witness Lucknow And Ahmedabad To Sign 3 Players Before Auctions

The BCCI had set a price slab for the existing eight teams to retain their players. In a similar way, the two new teams featuring in IPL 2022 will have only Rs 33 crore to spend from their 90 crore purse to sign three players. The break up for the same is – Rs 15 crore, Rs 11 crore, and Rs 7 crore for the first, second, and third player respectively.

“If a player is negotiating with a new franchise, he can do it according to the purse allocation. If someone is in line to become the captain of a new team, then obviously he will be joining for Rs 15 crore,” said a CEO of one of the franchises.

Ahmedabad would be really interested in gaining the services of Hardik and Krunal Pandya, who Mumbai Indians have not retained, so is Ishan Kishan. Suresh Raina, another IPL stalwart, has been released from his franchise, Chennai Super Kings. Shreyas Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to the 2020 IPL final, has also parted ways with the franchise, who decided to continue with Rishabh Pant as the captain.

KL Rahul To Be Assigned Skipper For Lucknow In IPL 2022: Reports

Reports have already suggested that KL Rahul will be playing for Lucknow next season, with the negotiations starting long back. However, Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble confirmed that the opening batter decided to go into the auction and hence the franchise had to release him. Something similar might happen with Rashid Khan, who opted to leave Sunrisers Hyderabad and could end up playing for one of the two new teams.

The deadline for the new teams to sign three players is December 25, and then the mega auction is expected to happen. The date for the mega auction isn’t officially announced yet, but it could happen in January 2022.
