ICC World Cup 2019: Liam Plunkett Reveals Being Nervous Ahead of Final Squad Announcement
It was unfortunate for David Willey to miss out on a World Cup spot but he has to take in his stride and move forward as it is the nature of cricket. David Willey was part of the preliminary World Cup squad but was left out of the original 15 member squad in favour of Jofra Archer. Willey penned down his emotions on Twitter handle but stated that despite his ouster he will keep backing the England national team and cheer for them in the showpiece event.
The pressure on the England bowlers has been intense and everyone was aware of the fact that one of them might have to miss out in order to accommodate Jofra Archer in the squad. However, there are still chances of David Willey playing a part in the World Cup if injuries strike. If not his World Cup dream is all but over. Yet was indeed a cruel blow to Willey who is definitely a proven customer at the international level.
Another speedster Liam Plunkett was a worried individual but finally managed to make it to the squad. He has been consistent over the past four years and broke into the 15 member squad. Plunkett had become an integral part of the England limited-overs set-up. However, in the last year, it hasn’t been the same.
There is no doubt about the fact that Liam Plunkett has already reached the twilight of his career after turning 34. His pace has dropped considerably. He improved considerably against Pakistan bowling at 90 mph but with Jofra Archer having the ability to bowl in any situations, a bowler like David Willey could have been a better option for the England team.
Plunkett admitted that it was certainly a very tough competition.”You always have that slight doubt in your mind,” Plunkett said at the launch of England’s World Cup kit. “Are they going to go down this route, that route? I feel like I deserve to be in the squad but you just don’t know what they’re thinking.
“You get compared a lot. I’ve been through a lot since the World Cup in 2007 and whatever squad you’re in, there’s always someone chasing your tail. Whoever is in the county circuit. You’re always getting compared to someone.”
It was a nervous day for Plunkett when he was finally named in the 15 member squad. He tried to take his mind of the selection procedure and waited for ED Smith to give out the news. “You don’t know when it’s going to come. You know that they’re chatting,” he said. His wife, a financial analyst, held off telling him she had earned a promotion at work until he found out. As it transpired, it was a double celebration. “She’s worked just as hard to get there, so, good to hear that news as well.”
Liam Plunkett has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent bowlers for England in the last four years alongside the likes of Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid. Since the 2015 World Cup, Liam Plunkett has bagged 85 wickets at an impressive average of 28 in 53 matches. It is also the 8th most by any bowler and is just behind leg-spinner Adil Rashid among England bowlers.
Plunkett has been assigned a particular role in the team. He has been the man who has been given the ball in the middle overs and he has done a good job by taking consistent wickets. His variations of pace has augured well for him.
“That’s what I’ve done well, I’ve been successful at,” he said of his middle overs role. “And I don’t think they’d want me to do anything different. You’re always working on your game. I’ve worked a lot on my death bowling, you try and improve.
“I think every bowler needs to have the start, the middle and the end, be able to do it all. Some aren’t as good at stuff than other people but if you’re called upon, you need to step up and do whatever you’re asked to do.”
