ICC World Cup 2019: Martin Guptill Concedes England Wickets are True for Batting
The prolific opening batsman for New Zealand, Martin Guptill on Wednesday (May 15) stated the England wickets are pretty good for the batters while given to the nature of being flat for the summer. Meanwhile, the ICC World Cup 2019 will get underway when hosts England will lock horns with South Africa on May 30 in London.
Back in 2015, the right-handed batsman has played a remarkable role for the Kiwis in helping his tea to make it to the maiden finale of the quadrennial event. However, one of the World Cup hosts lost to Australia by seven wickets at the MCG.
In the previous World Cup, Guptill accumulated 547 runs at an outstanding average of 68.37.
The chief architect for the Black Caps four years ago, Guptill has backed himself for yet another challenge amid gruelling summers in the United Kingdom (UK).
“I have just got to (go) out there and do my thing. If it is there, I will try to hit it; if it is not, I will look to either block it or get off strike. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? But I can tell you it is not. It is about working with your partner at the other end. If he is going, I will try to get him on strike. And if I am going, he will try to get me on strike,” ICC quoted Guptill, as saying.
World Cup 2019: Flat wickets in England – Martin Guptill
With pitches true for the batting, Guptill reiterated that we’re supposed to witness high-scoring contests. However, he added one has to bat well in a bid to set those totals.
“I guess the way the One-Day Cup’s gone over there (England), it has been reasonably flat wickets and good for batting. So, there could be a few high scores. But then again, at the end of the day, you have got to bat well to get those scores. So, we have just got to go out there and prepare well and make sure that we come out firing,” Guptill added.
Well, Guptill has expressed excitement to play in English conditions. He believes the conditions in England are a bit like New Zealand. Adding, it would be cool to play out there.
While talking about his batting show in England, Guptill in 14 matches has amassed 652 runs.
Also, he has slammed unbeaten 189 against the Three Lions.
“I do love playing over there. It is very similar conditions to home. And you can be at ease over there. Plus, you can go out and just chill out when you are away from cricket. It is quite a fun place to play cricket, and the fans are great over there as well,” said Guptill.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will take on India and Windies on 25 May and 28 respectively in the warm-up fixtures.
Besides, the Kane Williamson-led side will face-off Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2019 opener on June 1st in Cardiff
