ICC World Cup 2019: Moeen Ali Backs Spin to Play a Huge Role
As the first match ended on Thursday, May 30, situations were assessed by different players for the upcoming game. England’s finger-spinner, Moeen Ali did the same and predicted that the spinners will come into play as the tournament will wear on. Post the match, Moeen said that more of spin will be seen as the World Cup goes on. He said this referring to the magical spell of Proteas’ Imran Tahir who scalped two wickets for 61 runs.
Meanwhile, England got off to a winning start as they obliterated South Africa by 104 runs. It was a perfect start for the hosts who were able to hit the ground running in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019.
“I think spinners are going to be huge,” Moeen said at the ICC mixed zone after the game. “As you saw, Imran bowled really well today. There was spin as well for Rash (Adil Rashid) and there’s always going to be a chance for getting wickets, especially if it is going to spin like it did today.
“I think it will spin, I think it will play a big part,” he added.
Moeen said that right from the outset, there were traces of enough spin for both finger spinners and wrist-spinners. He insisted that as the tournament will wear on there will be more of spin to see. Although, Moeen himself went a bit expensive in the match. He settled for just one wicket while conceding approximately six runs in an over. He bowled all the ten overs for 63 runs. Thus, Moeen went as the most expensive bowler for his side.
I tried to bowl tight but a finger spinner doesn’t have many options: Moeen
When asked about his performance in the match, Moeen said it was difficult for him to restrict runs. He said being a finger bowler there is a disadvantage of not being able to have variations.
“I try and bowl tight, to be honest with you,” he said. “There is not a massive amount that you can do unless it is spinning a huge amount. I try to bowled tight, build pressure and try and get wickets,” he said.
Further explaining he said, “as a finger spinner, you don’t have that mystery. That one extra fielder (inside) makes a bit of a difference. It’s not like we can bowl a googly or anything like that. You need to control the middle overs. As a wrist spinner, you can still spin the ball both ways, slider and googly. As a finger spinner, the maximum you can use is the arm ball, maybe the carrom ball. Not many people do that. I think for a finger spinner, it is very difficult.”
The allrounder said he had tried carrom ball during IPL in the nets.
Moeen doesn’t want to face the English pacer, Jofra Archer
During the interview, the 31-year-old southpaw praised the way young pacer Jofra Archer performed in the game. He said with the way Archer picked up the pace at the very start of the tournament, he is most likely to be lethal. Archer returned 3/27 from his seven overs which included the wickets of Faf du Plessis, Aiden Markram and a set Rassie van der Dussen.
He had earlier also forced Hashim Amla to retire hurt after striking his helmet grille with a 146kph snorter.
“He is fast, he is very fast,” said Moeen on Archer. “I faced him once in the nets and I don’t want to face him again, honestly. He is very fast, he is very accurate and very skilful. He brings a lot to the team. For him to get into his side, so quickly shows how good he is,” stated Moeen.
Moeen further added that the way he performed in IPL and all other leagues, World Cup pressure will only make him more deadly. The allrounder also praised his fellow allrounder, Ben Stokes. Stokes started off with a classy 89, then took the most astounding catch one can remember and finally finished off the game with two wickets. England now is preparing for their next match against Pakistan scheduled on June 3.
