Former England Test cricketer Nick Compton has criticised Team India skipper and prominent batsman Virat Kohli for stopping fans from jeering former Australian skipper – Steven Smith. Kohli’s gesture has won the internet

The former English opener has completely disagreed what Kohli had has an offer after asking fans to stop from booing Smith. Instead, he has had motivated fans to cheer for Smith, who was taking the field against India in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 game at the Kennington Oval in London on Sunday (June 09).

Here it becomes pertinent that Compton has made his Test debut on November 15 in 2012 against India.

In 2018, Compton had targeted Kohli before fans scathed Compton on micro-blogging website Twitter.

The unruly crowd has booed Smith, who recently returned to the international fold after serving a 12-month ban in the wake up of ball-tampering saga which unfolded in March 2018 at Cape Town.

Smith faced sanction for not being able to thwart the folly while being a leader who also formed the core leadership group of the Australian team. Smith alongside David Warner and ball-tamperer Cameron Bancroft was charged for bringing disgrace to the game.

After showing hatred against Kohli, whose consistency has earned him accolades, Compton blasted Kohli for his heartwarming gesture during India-Australia game which the Men in Blue won by 36 runs. Compton has criticised Kohli for forcing fans to applaud Smith after the star batsman was called as a ‘cheater’.

The incident unfolded when Smith was fielding at the boundary ropes only to face a hostile crowd. However, Kohli, who was batting at that time intervened and asked fans to clap for Smith instead of booing him.

So much so, it subsequently saw Kohli extending an apology to Smith. It came after Indian fans jeered Smith from the stands. In the meantime, the cricketing world has applauded Kohli’s sportsman spirit, which eventually saw netizens praising Kohli’s gesture.

Compton addressed that Kohli does not hold any right to stop fans from booing at Smith and Warner.

“I don’t think Virat Kohli had any right to tell fans to stop booing at Warner and Smith but rather clap them.. found it rather condescending if truth be told!” Compton wrote on his Twitter handle.

Interestingly, in his tweet threat, one of the Twitter users asked Compton that he doesn’t like India. However, to which Compton instantly responded that India is his favourite country and he loves it.

Meanwhile, Compton is doing a World Cup show for Love Sport. He has represented England in 16 Tests to amass 775 runs between 2012 and 2016. He has recorded two tons and as many half-centuries in 30 Test innings.
