India has suffered a huge blow as their opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the entire ICC World Cup 2019. Earlier, there were reports that suggested that Dhawan could be back into the playing XI ahead of the semifinal contests. However, it is confirmed that the southpaw batsman has been ruled out with a thumb injury.
Dhawan was hit on his left-hand thumb by Pat Cummins in India’s second match of the World Cup on 9th June. Subsequently, it was found out Dhawan had fractured his thumb which had ruled him out for three weeks.
Big blow for India.
“Dhawan has been ruled out. He is not in a position to take part in the World Cup,” the source said as quoted by IANS.
Meanwhile, India’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar had earlier said that they are keeping a close eye on Dhawan’s hand. Bangar had said that the team doesn’t want to rule him out and observe the progress. Rishabh Pant was flown to England as a cover the southpaw batsman.
“We will take at least 10-12 days to take a call on Shikhar’s condition. We don’t want to rule out a precious player like him,” Bangar had told the media on the eve of India’s third World Cup clash against New Zealand.
Shikhar Dhawan injury is a big blow for the Indian team as the left-hander has had a great record while playing in the ICC major events. The southpaw had scored a brilliant knock of 117 runs against Australia and is going to be missed dearly by the team.
KL Rahul had opened the innings against Pakistan in Dhawan’s absence whereas Vijay Shankar had replaced him in the playing XI.
India has had a great start to the tournament as they have won three matches out of the four they have played. One match against New Zealand was called off due to rain. India will play their next match against Afghanistan at Rose Bowl, Southampton on 22nd June.
