ICC World Cup 2019: Sourav Ganguly Picks His Semi-Finalists for the Showpiece Event
Former Team India skipper Sourav Ganguly has picked his favourites for the upcoming World Cup which is slated to be played in England and Wales from 30th May. He has picked India, Australia, England and Pakistan as the teams who might qualify for the semi-finals from the group stage.
The former Indian skipper led India to the final of the 2003 World Cup which India lost in the final by a huge margin of 134 runs to Australia. Ganguly who is now the advisor of Delhi Capitals in the IPL feels that the new round-robin format will be one of the most “keenly contested” tournament.
“My pick for the four semifinalists spot would be India, Australia, England and Pakistan. India is one of the title-contenders of course,” said Ganguly. This will be a 10 team tournament which will make the event a more evenly contested one.
“It’s going to be one of the most keenly contested World Cups. Indian team is so strong that in any tournament they will be favourites. This World Cup will probably be the best format. The best four teams will reach the semi-finals playing all the teams. There are no easy teams,” said Ganguly.
One of the major concerns for India might be the indifferent form of Kuldeep Yadav who has been dropped by the Kolkata Knight Riders after below-par returns in the first 9 matches. He has only taken 4 wickets in the tournament which has been so unlike Kuldeep Yadav. He conceded 27 runs in a single over in one of the matches and looked utterly disappointed.
“He will get wickets in the World Cup, don’t worry. He’s a superb bowler,” Ganguly said without reading much into Kuldeep’s below-par show for KKR. Sourav Ganguly is now playing a pivotal role in getting Delhi Capitals back on track.
Sourav Ganguly is definitely one of the greatest ever captains to have graced the game. He led India quite brilliantly in the 2003 World Cup only to get thrashed by Australia in the final. However, the former skipper is hopeful that the current Indian team can do something special in the upcoming World Cup.
