Virender Sehwag Rates Mumbai Indians As Favourites To Win IPL 2021 In UAE

Virender Sehwag picked the favourite franchise to win IPL 2021. The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League is being played in two parts due to the Covid-19 outbreak and bio bubble breaches in the middle of the season in May earlier this year. After 29 matches, BCCI was forced to postpone the tournament and shifted out of India and bring it to the UAE.

After a four-month-long gap, the remaining matches of IPL 2021 are slated to begin from Sunday with defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Dubai. While MS Dhoni-led CSK has won three titles, Rohit Sharma-led MI has won the most — five trophies so far.

Virender Sehwag Pucks Mumbai And Delhi As Contenders To Win IPL 2021

Before that, Virender Sehwag picked the two franchises- Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals – the finalists of the last year – as the favourites to win the IPL.

“Since the second half has been shifted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I think Delhi and Mumbai will again be favourites and the five-time champions are slightly ahead,” Sehwag told PTI.

Delhi Capitals

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians are currently at No.4 in the points table with 8 points from 7 matches. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, is at the top of the table with 12 points in 8 games. Additionally, the second leg of IPL 2021 will also be a momentous occasion as the marquee tournament will welcome the fans back to the stadiums after the previous season.

Despite CSK’s consistent run under MS Dhoni, Mumbai is ahead in the overall head-to-head battle. Both sides have faced each other in 32 IPL matches with MI winning 19 times and losing 13 times so far.

Virender Sehwag: Chennai And Bangalore Might Face Problems In Slow Pitches In UAE

Virender Sehwag, who is ready to put his money on the five-time champions Mumbai Indians if he had to pick one team, reckons that pitches in UAE will be slower and thus Chennai and Bengaluru might face some problems. During the first leg of IPL 2021, MI has defeated CSK in a high-scoring match, where the defending champions Mumbai chased down the target of 219 and won the match by six wickets.

“Chennai’s average score in India was 201 during the first phase but I think when it comes to UAE tracks, they would be lacking a bit in batting firepower. If I have to pick one team, that will be Mumbai.”

Virender Sehwag Reuters Photo

He said that for Chennai, after such a long gap, it might take “some more matches” to settle down and get into the “groove”. Virender Sehwag believes that with ICC giving a window to change teams till October 10, there could still be room for some good performers, who have missed the bus.

“100%. We have around seven matches minimum left for the teams. That means you still have a platform to perform and those who are on the fringes could still impress the Indian selectors who would be watching the tournament closely. “

“Since ICC allows a window to change teams, I will not be surprised if there are some changes in the original squad,” the Nawab of Najafgarh said.

Virender Sehwag, who himself was one of the most explosive batsmen of his era, picked four young Indian cricketers he would look forward to watching in IPL. The 42-year-old named flamboyant Mumbai Indians batsman Ishan Kishan was his first choice amongst the four followed by the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson.

Virender Sehwag also made some bold claims and said unpicked players doing well in IPL 2021 might be drafted in the T20 World Cup as ICC allows a window to make changes into the squad. Virender Sehwag, who has worked with the Punjab Kings team (Kings XI Punjab then) as a mentor, said if Devdutt Padikkal can perform well for the RCB in these remaining 7-8 matches then he can be drafted into the Indian T20 World Cup squad.

Chris Woakes Preferred The 2021 T20I World Cup And Ashes 2021/22 Over IPL 2021

Chris Woakes, England seam-bowling all-rounder has elaborated on his decision to skip the second phase of the IPL 2021. Chris Woakes of Delhi Capitals earned a spot in England’s T20 squad and is among three English players to pull out of the UAE leg.

The 32-year old has put his international commitments ahead of the lucrative tournament. Chris Woakes wants to be available, fit and firing in England’s bid to win their second T20 crown and the Ashes in Australia soon after.

Chris Woakes, playing for his first-class side Warwickshire, preferred the T20 World Cup and the Ashes, claiming it would be an exciting few months for the English team. Thus, he had to sacrifice his IPL deal. The UAE leg of the IPL 2021 begins on September 19 and goes on till October 15, following which the T20 World Cup will begin in a couple of days.

“With the World Cup and the Ashes, it would have been too much in a short space of time. I would have loved to have been part of the IPL but something has to give. A World Cup and an Ashes tour, it’s almost as big a winter as our summer was in 2019.”

“It’s a shame with what’s going on Covid-wise that it’s not going to be as normal as everyone would like. But, from a cricket perspective, it’s very exciting,” Woakes said as quoted by The Guardian.

Chris Woakes further remarked that he was unaware of being part of the T20 squad. The right-arm seamer said the IPL has stumbled upon them at the end of their summer. Chris Woakes has featured in only 10 T20Is since debuting in early 2011. He was recalled after 6 years in T20Is and featured in 2 matches of the Sri Lanka T20Is in June 2021.

“My inclusion in the World Cup squad, I didn’t know was going to happen – especially a couple of months ago. The IPL has been rescheduled and thrown on to the end of our summer,” Woakes said as quoted by The Guardian.

Chris Woakes was part of the Delhi Capitals and took five wickets in three games in the first half at 16.40 apiece. The franchise announced Australian seamer Ben Dwarshuis as his replacement on Monday.

Chris Woakes Played Only 1 Test This Summer Against India

The 32-year old could only feature in one Test this summer, playing in the fourth Test at the Oval against India. He recovered from his heel injury to replace Sam Curran and picked up four wickets in the first innings. Chris Woakes followed it by scoring a crucial fifty.

The all-rounder was named in England squad for South Africa, Sri Lanka, and India series but wasn’t picked in the playing XI in any of the tours. The talented all-rounder underwent knee surgery before New Zealand Tests, which made him unavailable for the 2 match Test series against the Kiwis.

Unfortunately, England slumped to a 157-run loss in the 4th Test. The fifth Test in Manchester was abandoned after India refused to take the field. It emerged later that the influx of COVID-19 cases within their support staff had created tensions in their minds.

Chris Woakes had pulled out of the remainder of the IPL because of personal reasons, joining Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Jonny Bairstow, Punjab Kings’ Dawid Malan, and Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler in withdrawing from the tournament. The Delhi Capitals are currently on top of the IPL points table with 12 points from eight matches. They resume their campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22.

Chris Woakes did not feature in IPL 2020 but Delhi Capitals retained the England cricketer for the IPL 2021. He scored 15 runs and picked up 5 scalps in 3 games before IPL 2021 was suspended due to Covid-19. Overall, he has 30 scalps in 21 matches averaging 21.93 and scored 78 runs playing IPL 2017,2018, and 2021.

Gary Kirsten, 2011 World Cup-winning Coach, Isn’t Interested In Coaching India At Present

Former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten has said that he isn’t looking at making a comeback as Team India’s coach. Team India’s backroom staff is all set to be revamped after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 as the contracts of head coach Ravi Shastri and other coaches are set to end. Ravi Shastri and his team’s contracts were extended for two years in 2019 by the Kapil Dev-headed Cricket Advisory Committee.

Apart from a new head coach, India will also have new members in the backroom staff. While there are a number of veteran coaches who would be eager to work with India, one name that could pip everyone in the race is that of South African Gary Kirsten.

Gary Kirsten Isn’t Interested In Coaching India At Present

India’s only 50-over World Cup-winning coach, Gary Kirsten had a stint with Team India between 2007 to 2011. Apart from winning the ICC event, India also climbed to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for the first time under him. Gary Kirsten was in line to make a comeback in BCCI’s system when he was named as CAC’s first choice for the role of the Indian women’s team’s head coach, in 2018.

Since he was associated with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gary Kirsten couldn’t take up the job. He was also in the race to become the England cricket team’s head coach. But that too didn’t happen. A decade after quitting the coveted post, Gary Kirsten answered the million-dollar question of making a comeback as India’s coach and also spoke about his IPL gigs.

“Not at this stage. I’m involved in a business called CoachED (www.coachedcricket.com) which focuses on providing access to online coaching certification for coaches in academies, schools and associate countries. I’m passionate about coach education and I know, with personal experience, the value of quality coaching for any player. CoachED has afforded me the privileged opportunity to serve the game globally and work with young aspiring coaches,” said Gary Kirsten.

“India has very successfully moved ahead of the game and is using their primary competitive advantage (depth of players) to great benefit across all the formats,” said Gary Kirsten on change of Indian core and changes in fitness levels.

Gary Kirsten has said that he isn’t looking to make a comeback as Team India’s coach. Gary Kirsten was at the helm of affairs when India won 50-over World Cup in 2011. Gary Kirsten has coached Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals in IPL.

Gary Kirsten: Coaching Is Very Different In The IPL

Former India coach Gary Kirsten, who has seen Virat Kohli from close quarters, reckons he has kept growing. Admitting that he has worked with Virat Kohli – the leader – for merely a year, Gary Kirsten believes the Indian captain is doing a fantastic job.

“I have really only done one season with him as captain. He is doing a fantastic job for his country. Like any young captain, with more experience and understanding of what it takes, he has got better and better. The are many fantastic match-winners in the Indian team, currently.” on Virat Kohli as new skipper.

“Coaching is very different in the IPL than in any other environment. I’m really enjoying coaching in T20 cricket which requires a different set of skills compared to working with an international team. I think the most successful IPL coaches have been able to create continuity with their playing squad. The relationship between the coach and the owner and the systems they co-create is vital to sustainable success,” on coaching in IPL.

“I believe too many owners employ new coaches and make big changes to their playing squad in the hope that there will be a quick turnaround of results and then ongoing success. Cricket seldom works likes that, especially with the margins for winning and losing so small in an IPL game,” on IPL.

“Coaching has changed significantly, especially in T20 cricket. Coaches are generally doing all the strategic preparation for matches and have close relations with Analysts who assist them with an endless and rich bank of data. Recruitment and match strategy has become as much a part of the skill sets of coaches as player relationships and man-management systems.” on coaching change.

“It’s an exciting time for coaches and I don’t think we are a long way before coaches can communicate with their captains on the field to make real-time strategic decisions,” concludes Gary Kirsten.

Gary Kirsten was the head coach of the MS Dhoni-led Team India in the 2011 World Cup. His guidance and expertise helped the MS Dhoni-led side lift the 2011 WC crown in India.

With the IPL second leg coming up, Gary Kirsten – who has worked briefly with Delhi and Bangalore IPL franchises -reckoned coaching teams in the lucrative league is very different. He admitted that he is enjoying coaching in T20 as it requires a different set of skills compared to working with an international team.

IPL 2021: Shreyas Iyer Set To Get Back On The Field After NCA Gave Him Clearance To Play The UAE Leg

Shreyas Iyer, who was ruled out of cricket for a brief period due to an injury, is all set to get back on the field after being given clearance by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to play for the remaining matches of IPL.

Despite his return, however, it is being speculated that Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who replaced Shreyas Iyer as the skipper of Delhi Capitals, will continue to be the team’s captain for the remainder of IPL 2021.

Shreyas Iyer Is Fit Again And Ready To Get Back To Action But Rishabh Pant Will Continue Aa Skipper To Give Shreyas Iyer More Recovery Time

Rishabh Pant was made Delhi Capitals captain after usual leader Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury he sustained during the ODI series against England. But IPL 2021 was postponed due to a bio bubble breach which will see Shreyas Iyer back in action.

A source was quoted as saying by a sports portal, “While it is great news that Shreyas Iyer is fit again and ready to get back to action, it is understood that the DC management wants to give him more time to recover. As a result, Pant will continue as captain, but only for the second half of IPL 2021.”

Rishabh Pant, the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman, was one of the three players retained by Delhi ahead of the 2018 auction, and paid it back with a season, scoring close to 700 runs. While he missed out on the IPL Orange Cap but his batting was a bright spot for the Delhi Capitals, who went on to retain the youngster for the next two seasons, including for the IPL 2020.

Named skipper for the IPL 2021 following an injury to Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, who has 1 hundred and 12 IPL fifties to his name, is coming into this edition of the tournament on the back of a brilliant run of form in international cricket and will be looking to replicate the same for Delhi Capitals.

Shreyas Iyer Dislocated Shoulder While Fielding Against England In The 1st ODI In March 2021

Shreyas Iyer dislocated his shoulder while fielding against England in the first ODI in Pune on March 24. He had to leave the field right away and later underwent surgery that kept him away from the first session of the 14th edition of IPL before the tournament was suspended midway due to the breakout of Covid-19 inside the bio-bubble.

Speaking about his present condition, Shreyas Iyer had said, “Currently, I am feeling amazing, the journey was awesome, to be honest. I never hesitated for a while but right after the injury, I was sulking a bit and I didn’t know exactly what to do. I went into the dressing room and cried and it took me a while to digest it but yeah, at the end of the day, you need to go through all of it.”

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy duties and he did well leading Delhi Capitals to the top of the points table with 6 wins in 8 matches before the tournament was suspended mid-season owing to the covid-19 outbreak amongst multiple franchises.

The Delhi Capitals qualified for the finals first time in IPL 2020 after twelve years of the start of this tournament and qualified for the IPL playoffs in 2019 for the first time in seven years. In IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals lost only to Rajasthan Royals-3 wickets and Royal Challengers Bangalore-1 run.

In the first leg, DC outplayed Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders. They won both the encounters against Punjab Kings. For Delhi Capitals, Shikhar Dhawan played a leading role while batting. His powerful batting helped the team to win few games easily while chasing.

With 380 runs in 8 innings, the left-handed batsman is the highest run-getter in the tournament so far. In bowling, DC’s Avesh Khan showed a magnificent performance. The right-arm pacer picked 14 wickets in 8 games, emerging as the 2nd wicket-taker in the 1st leg of IPL 2021.

Ricky Ponting Questions Depth Around Australia Cricket After 1-4 Series Loss To West Indies And Bangladesh

Ricky Ponting has questioned the depth in Australian cricket after the poor T20 results on the recent tours of West Indies and Bangladesh but believes the team can still pose a challenge for the forthcoming 2021 T20I World Cup if their strongest side is available.
Australia ended the twin tours with a 2-8 scoreline losing both the series by a margin of 1-4 across the two T20 contests which was capped off by being skittled for 62, which was their lowest T20 total, in the final match in Dhaka.

Ricky Ponting: Depth Around Australia Cricket Is Not Where It Needs To Be

While Ricky Ponting acknowledged the conditions were challenging in Bangladesh, he was concerned that performances got worse as the matches went on. Only Mitchell Marsh emerged with an enhanced reputation with the bat although the bowling attack largely performed creditably.
“The lack of knowhow and skill in those conditions brought us undone again,” Ricky Ponting told Tim Paine on the Test captain’s SEN radio show.
“It’s been the achilles heel for Australian cricket for as long as I can remember – more so in Test cricket, but we’ve always found a way to be very competitive in Sri Lanka and India in white-ball cricket. Just goes to show the depth around Australia cricket is not where it needs to be so there’s some work to do there.”
“The T20 World Cup is not far away so hopefully we get all the boys fit and healthy because I still think with everyone fit and healthy in the UAE that the Australian team can push really hard to win the title. Let’s keep our fingers crossed we can put our strongest XI on the field.”

Captain Aaron Finch was ruled out of the Bangladesh series with a knee injury which meant Australia was missing up to eight players who could be considered among first picks including David Warner, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis from the batting order.
“There were a lot of names not there…but it almost seemed they got worse during that series,” Ricky Ponting said. “There’s no doubt those conditions were really difficult, but that’s the worry for me.
“They’ve been there long enough and done some training on wickets you’d have thought were quite similar to what they played on yet the further the series went, whether a lack of confidence or skill or game awareness, I’m sure they would have been shattered.”
Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh played three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies last month. In the T20Is, Mitchell Marsh scored 219 runs with a strike rate of 152.08 and took eight wickets with an economy rate of 6.76, making him the lead run-scorer and wicket-taker for Australia in the series. He was the leading run-scorer against Bangladesh too scoring 156 runs in 5 T20I games averaging 31.2.

Ricky Ponting Waiting For Confirmation On Whether Injured Steve Smith Is Available In The IPL 2021 And T20I World Cup

Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Delhi Capitals, said he was still waiting for confirmation on whether he would have experienced batsman Steve Smith, who is recovering from an elbow injury, and Marcus Stoinis available but sees it as their best opportunity to be tuned up for the World Cup.
“There’s no doubt it’s their best preparation, in those exact conditions playing probably the strongest domestic T20 tournament in the world,” he said. “I’m not saying it just because I want some of the Australian players there with Delhi, but it sounds like our domestic season will be pushed back so they’ll be no domestic cricket here before the T20 World Cup, so preparation wise it’s spot on.”

“Not sure if they’ll be any restrictions on the bowlers going there, there may well be, but certainly the guys like Smith, Davey, Maxi, Stoinis who have been out of cricket for three or fourth months they need to get back into the groove.”
The country’s seven top cricketers including the likes of David Warner, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Marcus Stoinis, and Daniel Sams have pulled out from the upcoming West Indies series and Bangladesh series.
Star batsman Steve Smith was also not included in the squad as he is yet to fully recover from an elbow injury that flared up during the IPL. It now seems likely that a number of the Australia players will prepare for the World Cup by returning to the IPL for its resumption next month although Pat Cummins is not expected to be available due to the birth of his first child.

Prithvi Shaw Could Face Challenges In Tests Series In England And Needs To Make Adjustments, Salman Butt

Salman Butt, former tainted Pakistan batsman has stated that young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw could face a challenging time in England in the Tests unless he makes adjustments to his game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday confirmed that Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav, who are in Sri Lanka, will be heading to England to join the Indian Test squad as injury replacements. While Prithvi Shaw has played five Tests, Suryakumar Yadav is yet to make his debut in the longer format of the game.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Could Struggle In England As His Footwork Isn’t Good

During an interaction on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt admitted that Prithvi Shaw may be troubled by the moving ball due to his lack of footwork.

“Prithvi Shaw has an opportunity in England to prove why many people rate him so highly. But he could struggle in England given that his footwork is not all that good. In England, even batsmen with the best of footwork sometimes have a tough time, especially when the ball swings.”

Salman Butt added that Prithvi Shaw likes to go hard at the ball but has to be careful in harsh England conditions where there will be movement.

“Prithvi Shaw is someone who likes to go hard at the ball and play brutal strokes. It is evident the way he bats that he enjoys belting the ball. But in England you have to be a bit careful. You cannot just take on the bowlers without taking into account the movement and the conditions. Prithvi Shaw will have to review this aspect of his game.”

The former Pakistan skipper explained that experienced players like skipper Virat Kohli will give Prithvi Shaw the right guidance and he needs to incorporate those suggestions into his game in England.

“World-class players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara are part of the Indian team in England. They should give Prithvi Shaw the right information on how to play in England. Hopefully, he will adjust. If he doesn’t, you will see what happens.”

Prithvi Shaw has made the most of his form, since being dropped following the first Test in the Australia tour, and was in blazing touch versus the Lankans. His 24-ball 43 in the series-opening ODI and a run-a-ball 49 in the third and final ODI were a treat to watch for all. But he was dismissed in the very first ball of the match on his T20I debut off Dushmantha Chameera.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Has To Score Runs And Hundreds To Justify An Aggressive Batting Mindset And Only Then He Can Be Compared To Legends

“Some fans feel it is wrong to ask Prithvi Shaw to alter his game. They point out to Virender Sehwag and Viv Richards, who succeeded by playing their own brand of cricket. When you start producing results, you can stake a claim to a particular style of play being yours. You have to score big runs and hundreds to justify a different kind of mindset while batting.”

Prithvi Shaw made his T20I debut in the first game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka but was out for a golden duck. In six ODIs for India, the 21-year-old Prithvi Shaw has a strike rate of 113.85 in one-dayers and the best score of 49.

Prithvi Shaw earned a call-up into the white-ball squad following his excellent form in IPL 2021 (308 runs) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (827 runs). The Delhi Capitals’ opener had scored 308 runs from 8 innings, at a staggering strike rate of 166.49 in IPL 2021.

Shreyas Iyer Starts His Training With Pravin Amre To Be Fit For The UAE Leg Of IPL 2021

Shreyas Iyer, the Delhi Capitals regular skipper has started his training and is working towards being fit for the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League 2021. Shreyas Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL last year, started his training five days ago at the indoor BKC facility in Mumbai with Pravin Amre.

Earlier this month, Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of his Royal London One-Day Cup stint with Lancashire.

Shreyas Iyer Starts Training With Pravin Amre

Pravin Amre, who has largely been credited to the revival of Prithvi Shaw’s batting prowess after a poor Australia tour last year, has been engaged by the franchise to assist Shreyas Iyer in his training. They will continue to work till July 31 after which Shreyas Iyer has to report at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

“They have been working indoors mainly because there is no permission to do so outside. And there has been rain in Mumbai too,” a franchise source said.

The source added that the fitness go-ahead will eventually be given by the NCA authorities but going by the progress shown in the last five days, Shreyas Iyer should be fit by the time the IPL restarts. The tournament will resume in UAE on September 19 while Delhi Capitals play their first match on September 22 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy duties and he did well leading Delhi Capitals to the top of the points table with 6 wins in 8 matches before the tournament was suspended mid-season owing to the covid-19 outbreak amongst multiple franchises.

The IPL will now be the only tournament where Shreyas Iyer will get the opportunity to prove his form and fitness to the national selectors before the forthcoming T20I World Cup. The right-hander was impressive in the T20I series against England at home, but Suryakumar Yadav seems to have almost booked a middle-order slot for himself.

Khalaf Bukhatir: To Host IPL Once Again Is A Privilege

The day after the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the schedule of the IPL, Sharjah Cricket Stadium authorities have said the venue is ready to deliver secure games. Sharjah has been allotted 10 of the remaining 31 IPL games by the BCCI.

“We are more than ready and looking forward to hosting the players in a safe and secure environment. Our facilities continue to be upgraded and our pitches, as the past has shown, are ideal for an event like the IPL. To host this world-class tournament once again is a privilege,” Khalaf Bukhatir, the CEO of Sharjah Cricket Stadium, said.

During IPL 2020, the Sharjah Stadium witnessed the highest run chase in the history of IPL when Rajasthan Royals knocked off 223 against Punjab Kings. The first match at the ground this year will be a contest between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on September 24. The ground will also host two play-off games – Qualifier 2 on October 11 and the Eliminator on October 13.

Just By Playing Like Them, One Can’t Become Virender Sehwag Or Viv Richards: Salman Butt On Prithvi Shaw

Salman Butt has said that it is unfair to compare Prithvi Shaw with legends like Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag so early in his career. The former tainted Pakistan skipper added that playing an aggressive brand of cricket is not enough for a player to draw comparisons with the legendary swashbuckling duo.

Prithvi Shaw’s belligerent style of batting has divided opinion. The young opener scored two 40s in the ODI series in Sri Lanka but failed to carry on the momentum. According to experts, Prithvi Shaw must be allowed to play his natural game, while others feel the young opener needs to put a bigger price tag on his wicket.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Has To Score Big Runs And Tons To Justify A Different Kind Of Batting Mindset

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt opined that Prithvi Shaw needs to justify his hard-hitting style of play with big scores.

He said: “Some fans feel it is wrong to ask Prithvi Shaw to alter his game. They point out to Virender Sehwag and Viv Richards, who succeeded by playing their own brand of cricket. When you start producing results, you can stake a claim to a particular style of play being yours. You have to score big runs and hundreds to justify a different kind of mindset while batting.”

Pointing out that players like Richards and Sehwag are of a rare breed, Butt added: “Look at the gap between Richards and Sehwag’s careers. It took nearly 10-15 years after Richards for the cricket world to see a player with a similar attacking mindset in Sehwag.

“Richards scored 180 in England at a time when 225 was considered a good ODI total. Sehwag scored two triple hundreds in Test cricket and averaged over 50 for most of his career. Just by playing like them, one cannot become a Sehwag or a Richards. You have to put up that kind of a performance.”

The Indian opener Prithvi Shaw has made the most of his form, since being dropped following the first Test in the Australia tour, and was in blazing touch versus the Lankans. His 24-ball 43 in the series-opening ODI and a run-a-ball 49 in the third and final ODI were a treat to watch for all.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Is Playing Too Many Shots Too Early Despite Having All The Strokes In His Repertoire

According to Salman Butt, although Prithvi Shaw has all the strokes in the book, he needs to work on his game to produce better results. The former Pakistan opener gave the example of Prithvi Shaw’s performance in New Zealand when he kept getting out in the ODIs after getting starts.

Butt explained: “To give himself stability, a youngster has to convert starts. Talking of Prithvi Shaw, I saw him playing one-dayers for India in New Zealand as well.

“He used to hit three-four cracking boundaries and then get out. So, when something is not letting you continue and stopping you from making a big score, you need to modify it. You first need to score runs and then shape up in your own style.”

“He has all the strokes in his repertoire, but Prithvi Shaw is playing too many shots too early. He needs to take into consideration factors like time, pace, wicket and opposition and manage his innings accordingly. Even the great Sachin Tendulkar paced his innings as per the situation,” Salman Butt added.

He may leave the Sri Lankan tour midway as reports suggest he will board the flight to England to join the Test specialist team as a replacement.
