ICC World Cup 2019: Steven Smith is all Set for a Resounding Comeback
Tainted Steven Smith is ready for the ICC World Cup 2019 challenge following his return after a prolonged gap of over 14 months in international cricket. Smith is keen to make an impactful return although not as a leader but as a star batsmen.
On the other side, Australia will be bolstered with the inclusion of David Warner after serving the sanction of 12 months in the wake of a ball-tampering saga which unfolded in Cape Town in March 2018.
During the third Test, Cameron Bancroft tried to alter the condition of the ball, which eventually snowballed into controversy as he has faced nine-month suspension.
However, the right-handed batsman Smith has shown early signs of gearing up for the mega event. He recently slammed a fine half-century against Windies during an unofficial warm-up match in Southampton.
ICC World Cup 2019 – Smith is raring to go:
Meanwhile, Australian head coach Justin Langer reiterated Smith primary goal was to focus on his fitness. He added Smith and Warner are in good stead.
“Best physical condition of his life. That was one of his goals at the start of the ban, come back in better physical shape than ever before. He and Davey (Warner) have done the same thing, they are in pristine condition,” Langer said on Warner and Smith.
Moreover, Smith alongside Warner had faced the heat subsequently for turning a blind eye.
Back then, the 29-year-old star batsman’s head hung in shame which eventually saw him breaking down in tears during a presser.
Earlier, at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, Smith has done a fair job in the three warm-up matches against a New Zealand XI.
Known for his unusual batting style, Smith, who started off as a leg-spinner, has emerged as world’s premium batsman.
During the warm-up fixtures in a bid to prepare for the World Cup, Smith scored 22 in the first game. However, he has returned with unbeaten 91 and 89 respectively.
