Apart from the entire hullabaloo, with ICC World Cup 2019, heading into the knockout phase, former Team India skipper MS Dhoni, who’s one of the pillars for Indian cricket at the contemporary cricket, has received backing from teammates in the recent past. In the meantime, skipper Virat Kohli and deputy Rohit Sharma have often praised the veteran cricketer for his role as a seasoned campaigner for the Team India.
With many criticising Dhoni for his slow approach against England before playing a similar sort of innings against Bangladesh, cricketing experts have also thrown their support for Dhoni. Since 2004, Dhoni has worked hard on his game. He has walked in as a prolific cricketer, particularly in the day-long format- to grace the game.
As a true leader, Dhoni has had earned accolades for his remarkable role in helping India to lift the inaugural 2007 Twenty20 World Cup. After five years, his towering six has helped him to see India winning their second ODI World Cup in 2011.
Then in 2013, Dhoni has helped India to clinch the ICC Champions Trophy.
During the press conferences, Kohli has been vocal about Dhoni. He has often backed his former leader by saying Dhoni’s prominence has helped India to go a long way and he has often been given his best in whatever capacity he could.
Besides, at the age of 37, Dhoni, has been lighting quick behind the stumps even though suffering from a couple of failures with the bat at the ongoing World Cup.
MS Dhoni is past his prime?
However, one of Dhoni’s teammates cited that he is supposed to carry alongside the tale. He added it has been evident when the Ranchi-star scored 33-ball 35 before losing his wicket in the final over of the game when India posted 314 for nine in 50 overs.
“Let’s be honest. We are not England when it comes to batting. We have a tail and when Mahi bhai walks in, more often than not, he needs to keep that in mind. He doesn’t have the freedom say a Ben Stokes has because of England bat till almost number 10, we don’t. We lost two wickets in the final over against Bangladesh the moment he got out,” a player told IANS.
Also, the player maintained that Dhoni has the solution for every problem which crops in. He further remarked that Dhoni relies on different plans. Also, the member of current Indian World Cup squad reiterated that Dhoni had also been telling Rishabh Pant where he could get runs.
“As for his experience on the field, he is the man who has the answer to every question we have. If Plan A doesn’t work, he gives you B, C and D. In fact, even during the game against Bangladesh on Tuesday, did you notice him constantly guiding Rishabh Pant and telling him about the areas he should target? You cannot buy that experience in the market,” the player maintained.
MS Dhoni stills do a bit as a leader:
Interestingly, one of the players stated that Dhoni’s presence allows Kohli to place himself in the outfield. Thus, Kohli fairly relies on Dhoni, who suggests for necessary changes at times as per the requirement of a bowler.
“Virat bhai can stand in the deep and cut the important boundaries. Because Mahi bhai is standing behind the wicket to guide the bowlers. The best part is that when we walk out to the field. After a couple of overs he will tell the bowlers the exact areas to bowl on. And how the bowler needs to work on his speed and variations. That is irreplaceable let me tell you,” the player said.
Meanwhile, India are already into the semis of the ICC World Cup 2019. They will play their final league game against Sri Lanka on Saturday (July 6) at Headingley in Leeds.
