"If The Evidence Is Conclusive Only Then…” Ravichandran Ashwin On Counter Reviewing In TNPL 2023 1

Ravichandran Ashwin is known for pushing the boundaries of the rules of cricket and his amazing ability to improvise was seen in a match in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2023) tournament.

Ashwin, playing for Dindigul Dragons’ against Ba11sy Trichy in Coimbatore, shocked everyone when he counter-reviewed a DRS call by batter R Rajkumar on Wednesday, June 14.

The event happened on the final ball of Trichy’s 13th over. Before Rajkumar reviewed it upstairs, Ashwin successfully appealed for a caught behind off his bowling. The TV umpire determined that there was a distinct separation between the bat and the ball and that the spike was coming off the bat and striking the ground.

After the judgment was overturned, Ashwin counter-reviewed it and demanded another look. He got what he wanted, but the TV umpire stuck with his first ruling of not out.

“When I saw it on the big screen I felt…see DRS is new to this competition. Generally the spike comes a little ahead of the bat even if there’s an edge. So that’s why if the evidence is conclusive only then you can overturn the decision. Overturning it was…I was not quite happy so that’s why I reviewed it again, thinking maybe they will look at from another angle, that’s all,” Ashwin said at the post-match presentation.\
