IND vs AUS 2017: I’m Looking Forward to Playing Against Steve Smith – Washington Sundar
With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) giving him an opportunity to test himself against Australia, Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar is looking forward to playing against Steve Smith & Co.
The youngster shot to prominence after playing an integral part in Tamil Nadu’s victorious campaign in the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy. He played a total of nine games in both the tournaments and ended with an outstanding economy rate of 3.93. Before that he had impressed during the inaugural season of Tamil Nadu Premier League, taking 11 wickets in nine games at an average of 12 and an economy rate of only 5.54.
Those impressive performances did not go unnoticed, as he was roped in by Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement for the injured Ravichandran Ashwin and the decision turned out to be an inspiring one, as Sundar played a significant role in the team’s march to the final of the IPL. He finished the season with eight wickets including the outstanding spell of three for 16 in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians.
Sundar has now been rewarded for his performances, as he has been included in the 14-man squad for the warm-up game against Australia on September 12. He played under Steven Smith during the IPL, and he is now looking to lock horns against the Australian star.
“I’m glad to have got this opportunity. I have played a lot with Smith in the IPL with Pune. Now, I’m looking forward to playing against him. I’m also happy that people are looking at the performances from the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy,” Washington was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Sundar’s Tamil Nadu teammate and left-arm spinner Rahil Shah has also made it to the squad for the Board President’s XI and is delighted that his hard work has paid off.
“I was dropped from the Ranji playing XI after two games last season. I worked extremely hard on my fitness and bowling when I was on the sidelines. I see this selection as recognition for my performances in the last limited-overs tournaments. Also winning the title as a team will always open up more opportunities like these for our team players,” Rahil said.
