India have included Washington Sundar, Jaydev Unadkar, Deepak Hooda and Basil Thampi in the 15-man squad for the forthcoming three-match Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka. Captain Virat Kohli, who is rested for the ODI series against the Islanders, has been rested for T20Is too. In his absence, Rohit Sharma will lead the side.
Washington has received his maiden India call-up for his stellar performances since this year’s Indian Premier League. He was roped in by Rising Pune Supergiant as an injury replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin and repaid the faith by taking 11 wickets in nine games at an average of 12 and an impressive economy rate of only 5.54. He also impressed in this year’s Duleep Trophy and continued the same form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, where he has scored 315 runs so including the 159-run knock against Tripura which was his maiden first-class ton in addition to picking up 12 wickets.
Just like Washington, Unadkat had also impressed in this year’s IPL. The left-arm seamer took 24 wickets in just 12 games at 13.41 including a five-wicket haul and was only behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the list of this year’s highest wicket-taker. He also impressed in the two warm-up games against New Zealand, picking up seven wickets.
Thampi has also been rewarded for his fine show in the tournament. The right-arm pacer, who was also included in the India A squad for the tour of South Africa, picked up 11 wickets in 12 matches. His ability to bowl yorkers at will during the slog overs had left everyone mighty impressed.
The T20I series gets underway on December 20 in Cuttack.
