India won the second ODI of the series against the hosts Sri Lanka at Pallekele in a thrilling way.

After winning the toss, India decided to bowl first. Sri Lanka made 236/8 at the end of 50 overs. However, due to a rain interruption before the beginning of the second innings, India’s target reduced to 231 runs in 47 overs.

Despite a massive collapse in the middle of the innings, India reached the target in 44.2 overs after losing 7 wickets.

India won this ODI by 3 wickets and took a 2-0 lead in the 5-match ODI series.

  1. During this match, Indian wicketkeeper MS Dhoni completed his 99 ODI stumpings which are the joint highest no.of ODI stumpings made by a wicketkeeper. Former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara had also involved in 99 ODI stumpings.

  1. No.9 Indian batsman Bhuvneshwar Kumar played an extraordinary match winning knock of unbeaten 53 runs. It is the second highest individual ODI score by a batsman from no.8 to no.11 against Sri Lanka on the Sri Lankan soil. The record holder is another Indian batsman Ravindra Jadeja (no.8 batsman) with an unbeaten 60 runs innings at Colombo (RPS) on 8th February 2009.

 

  1. Indian batsmen MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar put a brilliant and match winning unbroken 100 runs partnership for the 8th wicket. Here are some important stats of this brilliant partnership:

i) It is the highest 8th wicket ODI partnership for India. The previous record was 84 runs partnership between Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar against Australia (at Vadodara on 25th October 2009).

ii) It is the highest 8th wicket ODI partnership for any team against Sri Lanka. The previous record was 83 runs partnership between the Pakistan batsmen Saqlin Mushtaq and Wasim Akram (at Vishakhapatnam on 27th March 1999).

iii) It is the second highest ODI partnership on the Sri Lankan soil for the any of last four wickets (7th to 10th wickets). The record is 126* runs partnership between Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Chandana (Sri Lanka) for the 7th wicket against India at Dambulla on 3rd August 2005.

 

  1. MS Dhoni (India/ Asia XI) remained unbeaten in this game on 45 runs. It was his 120th unbeaten in the international career. With this innings, Dhoni achieved the most no.of unbeaten knock in international cricket history. With this innings, Dhoni surpassed Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka/ Asia XI/ ICC World XI) who had 119 international unbeaten innings with his name.

 

  1. Sri Lankan off-spinner Akila Dananjaya bowled superbly in this game as his bowling figure was 10-0-54-6. Here are some important stats are given below:

iii) Also, it is the best bowling figure by a Sri Lankan bowler on an ODI losing cause. The previous best was 5/9 (10-3-9-5) by Muttiah Muralitharan against New Zealand (at Sharjah on 9th April 2002).

 

  1. Sri Lankan cricketer Akila Dananjaya received the man of the match award despite ended for a losing side. He became 18th Sri Lankan cricketer to receive ODI man of the match award despite the team lost the game.
