India vs Australia 2019: Harbhajan Singh Backs Youngsters for a Home Series

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who might not be in contention anymore and have subsequently found it hard to make a return to the international fold, but his wealth of experience and contribution in the past for the India National Cricket Team will be remembered for so long. Meanwhile, Harbhajan has backed the young blood–to feature in impending India vs Australia 2019 bilateral home series.

The veteran has opined that the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selectors should rest a couple of senior players. Thus, it will provide a substantial chance to the young breed in the much-awaited series ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Like many others, Harbhajan reiterated the mixture of youth and experience would be ideal for the upcoming limited-overs competition. He added the expansion in a pool would pay rich dividends for the Virat Kohli-led India.

“I don’t think you need to put the best 11-13 players in play because they had a very long tour of Australia and New Zealand. If they are asked to play in India, it might be too much for their body and then there is IPL also. So it will be good if the senior players can be rested as much as possible,” Harbhajan told Sports Tak.

The 38-year-old veteran Harbhajan suggested the selection committee go with Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal. The two-match T20I series against Australia will follow by a five-match ODI series. The home campaign will kick off on February 24 in Vizag.

“This can be taken a chance for players like Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Priyank Panchal. And similarly you can see Siddarth Kaul and Mayank Markande. These young players can be given a chance and the pool should be expanded. If the pool is large, more and more players will come,” he added.

Harbhajan has hailed efforts of Team India following their historic triumph in Down Under. The visitors went on to rout Kiwis 4-1 in five-match ODI series. He added such wins further help hosts in boosting morale.

Also, Harbhajan maintained the players have had given their best, and they’ll be looking forward to delivering as per the expectations.

“Confidence has been a major plus from the series in Australia and New Zealand. When you go overseas and win in such a manner against big teams, the morale of the team gets high. Every player did well there. For the time ahead, this tour Down Under will help them a lot,” Harbhajan further said.

Jasprit Bumrah a vital cog in the wheel:

While talking about the recent Hamilton loss which allowed Kiwis to seal the T20I series 2-1, Harbhajan asserted the absence of Jasprit Bumrah had left India to do much. He cited Kiwis wouldn’t have been able to go past 200-run had Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal bowled in tandem during the recently-held series.

“This thing is definite. Jasprit Bumrah not playing. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal not playing together is the reason that India conceded over 200 runs in two T20Is. Because if these three play together and plus Bhuvneshwar, I don’t think they will let past 200 runs,” Harbhajan signed off.

Whatever has unfolded so far, the things will be evident on February 15 (Friday). The selection committee will hold a meeting to reveal Team India’s squad for bilateral home series against Aaron Finch-led Australia.
