India vs England 2016/17, 2nd T20I: Always Tough To Bowl In The Death, Says Jasprit Bumrah

It needed a display of sheer will and determination for the Indian spinners to ensure that the hosts got out of jail in the second T20I at Nagpur. Needing to defend just 27 off the last 3 overs, Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah gave it their absolute best which strangled England in the last few overs of the game.

In the last over, Jasprit Bumrah was simply outstanding as all he had to defend was eight runs. The Gujarat pacer trapped the well set Joe Root in front and later confused hard-hitter Jos Buttler with his variations. Bumrah, after dismissing Buttler, needed to defend six off the last ball and did so by bowling a wide yorker to Moeen Ali.

Post India’s victory, pace guns Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah were delighted with their efforts.

“It’s always tough to bowl in the death,” said Bumrah about the death overs.

“I tried to remember the past where I’ve done well in such situations. We saw the first innings, it was on the slower side. Back-of-length deliveries and slower deliveries were difficult to get away, so that is what I wanted to bowl.”

“It was a pressure game,” said a relieved Ashish Nehra. “The only thing on my mind was to give as many runs to Jasprit to defend . One bad ball, one good shot and it would have been over. Hats off to the way Jasprit bowled the last over. We know how good a bowler he is with the old ball. I don’t think anything was wrong with that ball (last bal of his spell which was hit for a six). I did whatever best I could do.”

“I told Bumrah that even if he goes for four we will still win. He asked me if he should bowl a length ball but I told him to bowl a yorker outside off, with the kind he has. Even if it’s a full toss, it will go for a four, not for a six. With 32 odd needed off the last 4 overs, I told him that we will win,” Nehra concluded.
