On the opening day of the 5th Test between India and England at Chennai, England toiled hard. After winning the toss, England decided to bat first. At the end of the day, England made 284/4.

- On the opening day, England skipper and opening batsman Alaister Cook completed 11,000 Test runs. Cook took 10 years and 290 days to complete 11,000 runs in his Test career and he is the fastest to complete (by days) 11,000 Test runs. The record was previously held by Rahul Dravid who had taken 13 years and 149 days to complete 11,000 Test runs.
- On the day, once again Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Alastair Cook which was Cook’s 5th dismissal against Ravindra Jadeja in the ongoing Test series. It is the most no.of dismissals affected by a bowler to Alaister Cook in a series.
- England batsmen Joe Root and Moeen Ali put a brilliant 146-run partnership for the 3rd wicket. It was the second-highest 3rd wicket Test partnership for England on Indian soil. The highest 3rd wicket Test partnership for England on Indian soil is 206 between Alaister Cook and Kevin Petersen at Mumbai in 2012.
- England batsman Moeen Ali completed his 1,000 Test runs in 2016. He became the 4th English batsman and 5th overall batsman to score 1,000+ Test runs in 2016.
Also, Moeen Ali became 20th English batsman to score 1,000+ Test runs in a calendar year. Only Australia is ahead of England in the list of no.of batsman to score 1,000+ Test runs in a calendar year. Currently, Australia has 21 batsmen in this list.
