India vs New Zealand 2019: Rohit Sharma Sees Hamilton Loss as ‘Worst Performance’ With the Bat

Indian National Cricket Team interim skipper Rohit Sharma is dejected with the way things have unfolded in the penultimate One-day International (ODI) of the India vs New Zealand 2019 five-match series. Following an eight-wicket loss against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Thursday (January 31), Rohit did not hesitate in saying that it has been Men in Blue’s worst show with the bat after a prolonged gap. So much so, Kiwis chased down the target of 93 in 14.4 overs. Ross Taylor (37*) and Henry Nicholls (30*) registered a 54-run stand for the third wicket–to see hosts home in a thumping style.

Paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar settled with two for 25 in his five overs, as the ICC’s No.2 ranked Team India was blown away in all departments following a series win at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Moreover, Rohit has hailed the efforts of Kiwis bowlers especially Trent Boult, who broke the back of Indian batting line-up. He reiterated we didn’t expect things to happen in such a way but went on to credit the Black Caps for their spectacular bowling show. Boult starred with the ball by claiming a five-wicket haul. He conceded just 21 runs by bowling ten overs on a trot, and that has been something special in swinging conditions of Seddon Park owing to a penultimate ODI.

“One of our worst performances with the bat in a long, long time. Something we didn’t expect. You got to give credit to the NZ bowlers. It was a magnificent effort. Something to learn for us,” Rohit told Simon Doull during a post-match presentation.

Earlier, Kiwis skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first. The Kiwis bowlers equally accepted the call from their team leader while giving their best to extract juice from the surface early on. Golin de Grandhomme, who was picked alongside, Jimmy Neesham, Matt Henry and Todd Astle bowled superbly by picking three wickets. His figures read three for 26 in 10 overs.

India’s top-order batsman Rohit, who couldn’t cross the double-digit mark six other batters in Hamilton, admitted the fact that visitors played some reckless shots. He asserted one has to bat according to the situation in such conditions while adding they’re themselves to hold responsible by being skittled out under hundred.

India managed to score just 92 runs in 30.5 overs. So much so, Yuzvendra Chahal was the top-scorer for India with 18 off 37 balls. Rohit further added the failed to apply on a surface to settle down while asserting the swinging conditions had always been a tough task to do their job with the bat.

“At times, you need to absorb pressure (when asked about how to bat in swinging conditions). We need to blame ourselves for it. Thing were looking good at that stage. It was about applying ourselves. Once you get in, things will start to look easier. We played some bad shots as well. It’s always challenging when the ball is swinging,” Rohit said following a stinging loss at Seddon Park.

The 31-year-old Rohit, who was playing his 200th ODI, stated they have been outclassed even though have a merry-run in the limited-overs cricket for a long time. He believes the strong teams consistently keep their best while rising to the occasion.

The right-handed batsman Rohit pointed out they’re playing for their nation and has their goals to playing their A game irrespective of the conditions. He signed off by signing they know where the things have gone wrong and would be looking forward to plugging in those loopholes ahead of the final ODI against the Black Caps.

“Having a good run in the limited formats for a number of series. Everyone knows what went wrong. There will be times when it swings and we need to deal with it. When you are playing for your country, you try to give your best. Good teams usually keep ticking the boxes and today we didn’t tick the right boxes,” Rohit maintained.

Wellington will host the fifth and final ODI on Sunday (February 3), as India has already taken an unassailable lead of 3-1.
