In Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, India Women won their second successive match on Monday (24th February) after beating Bangladesh Women, who started their journey in this tournament with this match.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh Women sent India Women to bat first. While the Indian team scored 142/6 (20 overs), they restricted Bangladesh Women to 124/8 (20 overs).

Chasing down the target, Bangladesh Women were losing their wickets at the regular intervals. Opener Murshida Khatun (30) and the wicketkeeper-batter Nigar Sultana (35) scored 30+ runs, but they didn’t get enough support from others as all others failed to reach the 20-run mark.

Among the India Women bowlers, the leg-spinner Poonam Yadav (3/16) got three wickets, and Arundhati Reddy (2/33) took two wickets.

In the first innings, the opener Taniya Bhatia (2) lost her wicket cheaply in the second over of the match. However, the other opener Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues built up the innings with their crucial knocks. While Verma scored the quickfire 39 runs off 17 balls (2 fours and 4 sixes), Rodrigues played the knock of 34 runs before getting run-out.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur lost her wicket on just eight runs while Deepti Sharma was run-out on 11 runs and Richa Ghosh lost her wicket on 14 runs. At the end of that innings, Veda Krishnamurthy played a crucial cameo of 20 not out off just 11 balls (4 fours).

Among the Bangladesh Women bowlers, captain Salma Khatun and Panna Ghosh managed the identical bowling figures along with two wickets each (4-0-25-2).

On the other hand, in the earlier game of the same day, the defending champions Australia Women easily beat Sri Lanka in the other Group A match.

After winning the toss, Chamari Atapattu’s (50) half-century helped the Sri Lanka Women to score 122/6 (20 overs) in the first innings.

In reply, Australia Women were once battling on 10/3. However, captain Meg Lanning and Rachael Haynes played the crucial roles to secure a victory as the hosts chased down the target in 19.3 overs after losing five wickets (123/5).
