MS Dhoni is one of the very successful cricketers in international cricket history. The wicket-keeper batsman is a great batsman with mastery level finishing skills, a smart wicket-keeper, a powerful leader with calm and cool brain etc. Under his captaincy, India achieved many great successes in international cricket, including winning ICC World T20 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
MS Dhoni has played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is. During his long international career, while he himself created many histories, he was also a part to experience many histories for his team. Today, we’ll take a look at the five great innings when MS Dhoni was on the other end.
Here we are talking about the top four individual histories by the Indian batsmen when MS Dhoni was in the non-striker end.
Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th Test century
Apart from becoming the only cricketer to hit 100 international centuries, Sachin Tendulkar is also the only cricketer to hit at least 50 Test centuries as the right-handed batsman hit 51 centuries in his Test career. Tendulkar hit this 50th Test century in December 2010 during the Cape Town Test.
During the third innings of that Test, Tendulkar scored his 50th Test century. When Tendulkar achieved that landmark, captain Dhoni was playing in the other side on 84 runs. Tendulkar remained not out on 111 runs while Dhoni was dismissed on 90 runs.
Rohit Sharma’s maiden ODI double-century
Indian opener Rohit Sharma is a master in the limited-overs cricket. In ODI cricket, the right-handed batsman not only hit one double-century but also he has managed to hit it thrice. His first ODI double-century was against Australia at Bengaluru on 2nd November 2013 where he scored 209 runs off 158 balls (12 fours and 16 sixes).
When Rohit completed that double-century in 156 balls, on the first ball of the final over of the first innings of that game, captain Dhoni was on the other side with 53 runs. Dhoni ended that innings after scoring 62 runs off just 38 balls.
Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes
It was the match in the Super Eight stage of the ICC World T20 2007, where the Indian left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh smashed six sixes in an over of the England right-arm pacer Stuart Broad. After hitting the last six of that incredible over, Yuvraj also completed the fastest T20I fifty in just 12 balls.
When Yuvraj hit that six sixes in an over, the second batsman to six sixes in an over of the international cricket history, captain Dhoni was enjoying it from the other side by scoring seven off six balls. Yuvraj was finally dismissed on 58 runs off just 16 balls while Dhoni remained not out on ten runs off eight balls.
Sachin Tendulkar became the first ODI double-centurion
It was the Gwalior ODI between India and South Africa on 24th February 2010, where Sachin Tendulkar created history by becoming the first-ever batsman to hit an ODI double-century.
When Tendulkar ran for a single to complete that double-century on the third ball of the final over of that first inning of the match, skipper Dhoni was his partner at that time who was batting on 60 runs at that historic moment. Tendulkar remained not out on 200 runs off 147 balls, and Dhoni finished the innings on 68 not out off just 35 balls.
