IPL 2017: Pune End Mumbai’s Winning Streak As Host Fail To Chase 161

Fortune seems to favour of the Rising Pune Supergiant from past few days as the team that was on the verge of being eliminated from the tournament, have made a remarkable comeback by defeating Mumbai Indians at their home ground, to end their winning streak. And to register a win at Wankhede, the fortress of Mumbai Indians was their biggest achievement.

The target was not big but the home side just slowed down a bit in the middle overs to let the game slip from their hands.

The Rohit Sharma-led side started off well to chase down the total but lost wicket of Jos Buttler at a score of 35. The man in form, Nitish Rana, was seen struggling and today he failed to emulate his previous performance as he was dismissed for just three, for which he consumed nine deliveries.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard took the charge to steer the team then. They both shared 36 runs in 23 deliveries to keep hopes alive but a smart running catch from Steven Smith ended innings of Kieron Pollard.

The match went to the second last over where Mumbai needed 24 to win the game.

Ben Stokes finally delivered at the time when it was needed the most as he just gave seven runs in the penultimate over, to put pressure on Mumbai. Skipper Rohit Sharma was himself on strike along with Hardik Pandya but they could not carry the team past the total.

Harbhajan Singh’s six on the last delivery of the game was salt on team’s own wound as they needed 10 to win off the last ball and it proved to be of no use for the team.

Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss, the Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first in a quest to continue the winning streak. The first five overs were balanced in perspective of both the sides as the scoresheet showed number 37 without any loss of a wicket. However, the run rate increased in the next three where the pair of Rahul Tripathi and Ajinkya Rahane churned out 32 runs.

The duo had their eyes on a big partnership but Karn Sharma’s top spinner was good enough to remove Rahane from the strike, who was caught by the bowler himself. The leggie went to pouch the wicket Tripathi in his very next over and did not allow the batsman continue his aggressive batting.

Much was expected from Steven Smith but the skipper was cleaned by Harbhajan Singh and turned out to be his 200th wicket in T20 cricket. Two other big wickets followed in form of Ben Stokes and MS Dhoni, who could not really perform up to the expectations.

It was a roaring show from Manoj Tiwary in the closing part of the innings that helped them to increase the run rate and post a total of 160 on the board. Almost every batsman got start but none of them could stay at the crease for long to the batting side from the front, which was the biggest loophole, which they to work upon in future.

This was Pune’s second win over Mumbai in this year’s IPL.

Brief Score: Rising Pune Supergiant 160/6 (Rahul Tripathi 45, Ajinkya Rahane 38; Jasprit Bumrah 2-29) defeat Mumbai Indians (Rohit Sharma 58, Parthiv Patel 33; Ben Stokes 2-21) by three runs in Mumbai.
