Rohit Sharma’s Quest Is To Win The 2023 World Cup

Rohit Sharma’s three double-hundreds in One-day cricket make him one of the most prominent limited-overs batsmen ever. Five IPL titles for Mumbai Indians make him one of T20’s finest captains. The limited-overs cricket alone has given him more than he could have ever wished for.

The white-ball sorcerer now understands, more than anything else, that red-ball Test magic alone instils cricketing glory.  He knows that despite being the highest scorer at the 50-over 2019 World Cup with 648 runs and five centuries, the Indian team will be remembered for losing to New Zealand in the semifinals.

Rohit Sharma’s Quest To Win 2023 World Cup Driving Him

A World Cup win, a Test match hundred, earning an opposition’s respect are the few things that count. Rohit Sharma will want to make the most between the present and October 2023 – when India hosts the 50-over World Cup. It’ll be 12 years to the 2011 ODI World Cup which was won by India where the lost opportunity of not making it to the squad pains him no end.

The opener has been working on a blueprint for quite a while now and there’s a larger plan to ensure India comes ahead of everything else over the next 24 months. Rohit Sharma rested in the first game between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday but it wasn’t a last-minute call because of any niggle.

He will time and again keep taking these short breaks when required and it’s part of that larger plan. Rohit Sharma though will play MI’s second game versus the Knight Riders on Thursday because it’s the tournament’s business end and he should make it count.

Kieron Pollard captained the Mumbai Indians side in the absence of their regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who was given additional time off after returning from the England tour where he was on duty with the Indian team in their Test series against England. The duo of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya missed out on the match against CSK which was played in Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

Rohit Sharma Will Play Next Game Against KKR Confirms Coach Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians head coach, after suffering a 20-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, said regular skipper Rohit Sharma will be available for the next game, which will be against Kolkata Knight Riders, who beat RCB in the 2nd game in the IPL 2021 UAE leg.

Rohit Sharma, the MI regular skipper will be on the top of his confidence after his recent success against England in the Test series, where he smacked his first overseas century. In the 1st leg, Rohit Sharma was the team’s highest run-getter with 250 runs in 7 innings averaging 35.71.

He had scored 5480 runs in 207 IPL matches averaging 31.49 with 1 ton and 40 fifties. Rohit Sharma led the Mumbai Indians to a successful campaign in the 2020 season, which was their second consecutive title.

Virender Sehwag Rates Mumbai Indians As Favourites To Win IPL 2021 In UAE

Virender Sehwag picked the favourite franchise to win IPL 2021. The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League is being played in two parts due to the Covid-19 outbreak and bio bubble breaches in the middle of the season in May earlier this year. After 29 matches, BCCI was forced to postpone the tournament and shifted out of India and bring it to the UAE.

After a four-month-long gap, the remaining matches of IPL 2021 are slated to begin from Sunday with defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Dubai. While MS Dhoni-led CSK has won three titles, Rohit Sharma-led MI has won the most — five trophies so far.

Virender Sehwag Pucks Mumbai And Delhi As Contenders To Win IPL 2021

Before that, Virender Sehwag picked the two franchises- Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals – the finalists of the last year – as the favourites to win the IPL.

“Since the second half has been shifted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I think Delhi and Mumbai will again be favourites and the five-time champions are slightly ahead,” Sehwag told PTI.

Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (Image Credit: Twitter)

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians are currently at No.4 in the points table with 8 points from 7 matches. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, is at the top of the table with 12 points in 8 games. Additionally, the second leg of IPL 2021 will also be a momentous occasion as the marquee tournament will welcome the fans back to the stadiums after the previous season.

Despite CSK’s consistent run under MS Dhoni, Mumbai is ahead in the overall head-to-head battle. Both sides have faced each other in 32 IPL matches with MI winning 19 times and losing 13 times so far.

Virender Sehwag: Chennai And Bangalore Might Face Problems In Slow Pitches In UAE

Virender Sehwag, who is ready to put his money on the five-time champions Mumbai Indians if he had to pick one team, reckons that pitches in UAE will be slower and thus Chennai and Bengaluru might face some problems. During the first leg of IPL 2021, MI has defeated CSK in a high-scoring match, where the defending champions Mumbai chased down the target of 219 and won the match by six wickets.

“Chennai’s average score in India was 201 during the first phase but I think when it comes to UAE tracks, they would be lacking a bit in batting firepower. If I have to pick one team, that will be Mumbai.”

Virender Sehwag Reuters Photo
Virender Sehwag Reuters Photo

He said that for Chennai, after such a long gap, it might take “some more matches” to settle down and get into the “groove”. Virender Sehwag believes that with ICC giving a window to change teams till October 10, there could still be room for some good performers, who have missed the bus.

“100%. We have around seven matches minimum left for the teams. That means you still have a platform to perform and those who are on the fringes could still impress the Indian selectors who would be watching the tournament closely. “

“Since ICC allows a window to change teams, I will not be surprised if there are some changes in the original squad,” the Nawab of Najafgarh said.

Virender Sehwag, who himself was one of the most explosive batsmen of his era, picked four young Indian cricketers he would look forward to watching in IPL. The 42-year-old named flamboyant Mumbai Indians batsman Ishan Kishan was his first choice amongst the four followed by the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson.

Virender Sehwag also made some bold claims and said unpicked players doing well in IPL 2021 might be drafted in the T20 World Cup as ICC allows a window to make changes into the squad. Virender Sehwag, who has worked with the Punjab Kings team (Kings XI Punjab then) as a mentor, said if Devdutt Padikkal can perform well for the RCB in these remaining 7-8 matches then he can be drafted into the Indian T20 World Cup squad.

Mitchell McClenaghan Tweets Not To Blame New Zealand Cricketers For Pakistan Tour Pullout

Mitchell McClenaghan, a New Zealand pacer has told Pakistan batsman all-rounder veteran Mohammad Hafeez that the BlackCaps should not be blamed for abandoning the tour of Pakistan, rather if there is someone to blame then it is the New Zealand government.

The left-arm NZ pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, who had first joined Mumbai Indians in 2015, stayed on the bench in IPL 2020 as the team management had a number of overseas options. Hence, his release from the squad didn’t surprise many. Mitchell McClenaghan has 71 wickets in 56 matches for Mumbai Indians playing from 2015 to 2019. Mitchell McClenaghan went unsold in IPL 2021 auctions.

Mitchell McClenaghan Tweets To Mohammad Hafeez Not To Blame Cricketers For Tour Pullout

New Zealand made headlines around the world when the cricket team called off its bilateral ODI and T20 series minutes before the toss for the first ODI between the two sides was scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi. The Black Caps had arrived in Pakistan after 18 years to play a cricket series. New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan has replied to Mohammad Hafeez after the Pakistan cricketer took a dig at Kiwi players on social media.

“Come now bro. This has a bad taste to it… Don’t blame the players or the organisation… blame our government. They have only acted on the advice they have received. I’m absolutely certain these young men – all wanting to prove themselves wanted to play. they had no choice,” tweeted Mitchell McClenaghan.

On Saturday, veteran Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez had taken a dig at New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for postponing their tour of Pakistan citing security threats.

“Thanks to the security of Pakistan forces to make arrangements to @BLACKCAPS to reach at airport Safe & Sound. Wonder same route & same security but no threat today???” tweeted Mohammad Hafeez.

The Blackcaps abandoned their tour of Pakistan which came after an 18-year-old hiatus following a New Zealand government security alert, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) informed on Friday. New Zealand was slated to play their first match on Pakistan soil since 2003. The side was to play the hosts on Friday in the first of three ODIs in Rawalpindi, before moving to Lahore for a five-match T20 series.

Imran Khan And Jacinda Ardern Had A Teleconference Before New Zealand Decided To Abandon The Pakistan Tour

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had also spoken to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern before the Blackcaps announced they are abandoning their tour of Pakistan immediately.

Imran Khan assured Jacinda Ardern that Pakistan has one of the best intelligence systems in the world and that no security threat of any kind exists for the visiting team but instead NZC decided to return home after their government received a security alert. New Zealand Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills echoed NZC chief executive David White’s sentiments.

“We’ve been across this process throughout and are fully supportive of the decision. The players are in good hands; they’re safe — and everyone’s acting in their best interests,” he said.

The New Zealand cricket team on Sunday arrived in Dubai after leaving Islamabad on a charter flight. The contingent of 34 players and support staff are now settling into their Dubai hotel and undergoing their 24-hour period of self-isolation. Of this group, 24 players and support staff will return to their country New Zealand over the next week or so, as flights and MIQ rooms in New Zealand become available.

The toss for the 1st ODI between the two teams was delayed as both teams were advised to stay in their hotel rooms before news of abandonment. A global intelligence alliance issued the security alert which led to the cancellation of the Black Caps’ cricket tour to Pakistan as per a published report. The publication said citing overseas media that the intelligence came from “Five Eyes”, an intelligence alliance of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the US, and the UK.

New Zealand was scheduled to play three ODIs in Rawalpindi starting Friday (September 17) before the series shifted to Lahore for a five-match T20I series, but the entire tour now stands unilaterally postponed following the visitors’ expression of concern.

Ravi Shastri Told Virat Kohli And Selectors Not To Unleash Pacer Jasprit Bumrah In Tests In Indian Soil

Ravi Shastri was ready to put his money on pacer Jasprit Bumrah being an all-format bowler so much that he even told captain Virat Kohli and the selectors not to reveal him before the South Africa tour in 2018.

When Jasprit Bumrah with an unorthodox bowling action burst onto the scene in the cash-rich IPL playing for Mumbai Indians in 2013, very few believed he could make it big at the international level. Those who predicted he would gain stardom were only vouching for Jasprit Bumrah’s white-ball skills.

Ravi Shastri Told Virat Kohli And Selectors Not To Unleash Jasprit Bumrah In Tests Before 2018 Cape Town Test Against South Africa

There was hardly anyone willing to put their weight behind Jasprit Bumrah as the Test cricketer apart from India head coach Ravi Shastri who vouched to include Jasprit Bumrah in Tests. After making his limited-overs ODI and T20I debuts in Australia in 2016, pacer Jasprit Bumrah quickly built a reputation of being a bankable seam bowler. It was Ravi Shastri who insisted not to ‘unleash’ Jasprit Bumrah on Indian pitches in Test cricket.

“No one believed Jasprit Bumrah could play Test cricket. He was a white-ball bowler. But when I took over as coach I asked myself: ‘How do I take 20 wickets overseas?’ said Ravi Shastri.

Jasprit Bumrah (Photo by PETER PARKS / AFP)
Jasprit Bumrah (Photo by PETER PARKS / AFP)

“I knew I needed four great fast bowlers because I had played so much Test cricket against the West Indies. It started in South Africa in 2018 and we lost that fantastic series 2-1. I wanted to unleash Bumrah in that first Test in Cape Town. I bounced the idea off Virat months before and told the selectors: ‘Do not unleash him in India. I don’t want the world to see him in Test cricket before Cape Town.’ That was three years ago. Since then he’s taken 101 wickets [in 24 Tests]. It’s remarkable,” Ravi Shastri said.

Jasprit Bumrah was an instant success in his first Test appearance in Cape Town. His delivery to Proteas batsman AB de Villiers that found the gap between his bat and pad had a stamp of class and authority. Since then, the right-arm seamer has never looked back.
In his three years at the Test level, Jasprit Bumrah has proved coach Ravi Shastri right and all his doubters wrong.
During the recent Test series in England, he was India’s most impressive seamer and even went on to become the fastest Indian pace bowler to reach 100 Test wickets.
Before his achievement, Kapil Dev held the record, getting to the feat in 25 Tests, but the World Cup-winning captain’s record was bettered by Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up his 100th Test scalp in his 24th game. He has picked 6 five-wicket hauls and his career-best figure is 6/27 and his career average is 22.79 which is quite impressive.

Jasprit Bumrah Will Ply His Trade For The Mumbai Indians In IPL 2021 UAE Leg

Jasprit Bumrah, who will ply his trade for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 resuming on Sunday at the UAE, had major roles to play in India’s historic back-to-back Test series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and then in 2020-21.

Ravi Shastri said that India had the upper hand in the series when he was asked about the outcome of the England series which is still undecided as the fifth Test was cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns in the Indian camp.
Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah (Image Credit: Twitter)

“I think so because you are playing overseas and you’re ahead with one game to go. Look at the first Test [India were 52 for one and chasing 209 when the rain ruined the final day]. We would have knocked off those runs, definitely. It could have easily been 3-1. Then no one would have cared for the last Test,” Ravi Shastri added.

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in recent times in the world at the moment and he showed his class in the recently concluded red-ball Test series against England. He finished as the highest wicket-taker for India in the four Tests and picked up 18 wickets. In his prime form, Jasprit Bumrah has been one of the match-winners for the Mumbai Indians and has bowled splendidly in the India leg of IPL 2021 as well.

The right-arm quick was superb in the previous edition of IPL 2020 held entirely in UAE too by being the 2nd highest wicket-taker and he enjoyed the conditions really well. He used the pace of the wickets to his advantage and executed the yorkers to perfection. In the first leg of IPL 2021, the right-arm pacer with an unorthodox action scalped 6 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 32 and an economy of 7.11. In the previous season in IPL 2020, he picked 27 scalps in 15 games averaging an awesome 14.96.

IPL 2021- CSK vs MI Dream11 Prediction, Fantasy Cricket Tips, Dream11 Team, Playing XI, Pitch Report, Dream11 Team, and Injury Update of the match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

CSK vs MI IPL 2021 Match Preview:

Chennai Super Kings will lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the 30th match of the Indian Premier League, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, on Sunday.

The second leg of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to resume this Sunday with its ‘El Clasico’, Chennai Super Kings versus Mumbai Indians. The last time the two teams faced each other, Kieron Pollard’s scintillating show guided the defending champions to a four-wicket win in New Delhi and denied Chennai the top spot in the points table.

Although in the same season, the game was played four and a half months back before Covid-19 fears brought an abrupt halt to the season and suspended the league indefinitely. But unlike most other teams, these two former champions have not witnessed any change in personnel before resumption, however, the host nation has been changed, to the UAE, with the match slated to be played at the Dubai International Stadium.

Chennai Super Kings have found a second lease of life after struggling throughout IPL 2020. Had it not been for a Kieron Pollard masterclass, the team would have been sitting at the top of the points table. They are still quite comfortably replaced with five wins from 7 matches and need to win 3 out of the remaining 7 matches to qualify for the playoffs.

CSK will face defending champions Mumbai Indians whose batting let them down in the first instalment of the tournament. Still, the team finds a place in the top half with four wins from 7 matches.

Chennai will continue to open with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. du Plessis, however, led St Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League and missed out in the knockouts due to a groin injury and is a doubt for the first match.

CSK vs MI IPL 2021 Pitch Report:

The Dubai International Cricket Stadium has generally been a relatively high-scoring venue with ample help on offer for the pacers. There should be enough swing on offer early on to keep the batters on their toes. They will need to bide their time in the middle before going big. Strike rotations will also be key, with the side of the ground being relatively longer than the other. Both teams will look to chase under the lights, with 160-170 being a good total at the venue.

CSK vs MI IPL 2021 Probable Playing XIs:

CSK:  Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi/ Josh Hazlewood, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir

MI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Adam Milne.

Top Picks for CSK vs MI IPL 2021 Dream11 Prediction and Fantasy Cricket Tips:

CSK

Middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu played a cracking knock of 72 runs off just 27 balls against the same opposition in the first meeting. Overall, he has piled up 136 runs from seven matches.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been quite impressive for CSK in the last couple of seasons. He struck three successive half-centuries to end IPL 2020 and has scored 196 runs at a strike rate of 126.80 in the current season so far.

Moeen Ali was excellent in the initial phase of this tournament. England off-spinning all-rounder scored 206 runs while striking at 157.25 and also took five wickets. Moreover, he did well in the Hundred and T20 Blast as well.

Ravindra Jadeja will be a top all-round option. The left-handed all-rounder has aggregated 131 runs at a strike rate of 161.72. Moreover, with the ball, he has taken six wickets at an economy rate of 6.70.

Deepak Chahar could be a crucial bowling pick. The premier CSK pacer can run through the opposition top-order with the new ball. He picked up a couple of four-wicket hauls in the initial phase of this tournament.

Shardul Thakur‘s recent heroes with the Indian Test team should boost his confidence for the remainder of the IPL. Thakur has taken five wickets from seven matches so far.

MI

Rohit Sharma has been batting beautifully across all formats this year. In the first half of the IPL 2021, the MI skipper was his side’s leading run-getter. He amassed 250 runs and got a good score in almost every game. Thus, he will be a top option as a fantasy captain.

Suryakumar Yadav can be backed as vice-captain. The MI No. 3 was a touch inconsistent in the first half but he batted really well in the series against Sri Lanka. He had scores of 31 *, 53, 40 ( ODIs ) and 50 ( T20Is ).

Quinton de Kock is going to be a popular wicket-keeping pick. The left-handed South African wicket-keeper batsman looked scratchy in the first half of this tournament. But he has been in top form recently and amassed 153 runs against Sri Lanka in three T20Is.

Rahul Chahar has been in top form with the ball. The MI leg-spinner returned with 11 wickets at an average of 18.36 and has an economy rate of 7.21. He will be a key bowler for MI once again.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled really well in the first half of this 2021 season. But the ace Indian pacer did not have the returns to show. He took six wickets at an economy rate of 7.11.

Trent Boult: Trent Boult’s ability to swing the ball came in handy the last time Mumbai Indians played in the UAE. He will once again be a threat with the new ball and should pick up a wicket or two in this much-awaited CSK vs MI clash in IPL 2021.

Kieron Pollard turned out to be one of the game-changers for the Mumbai Indians in the first phase of the IPL and he smacked 87 off 34 balls against the same opponent- Chennai Super Kings in India in the first half of IPL 2021. He hit eight sixes and six fours in the knock and made sure that his team got over the line in a tough chase of 219 runs.

Mumbai Indians will be happy that they have the services of the West Indies captain who is one of the fearsome strikers of the cricket ball. Kieron Pollard will be keen to get his best all-round game against CSK especially and he has been in good form in the recently concluded CPL 2021.

In the first leg of IPL 2021, the West Indies all-rounder scored 168 runs in 7 matches at an average of 56 and strike rate of 171+. Kieron Pollard formed a critical part of the victorious MI squad in the 2020 season, smashing the ball at a strike rate of 191. He is loved by the Mumbai fans and big Trinidadian will look to set things straight again in the 14th season.

Quinton de Kock

The South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock likes the ball coming onto the bat and he scored loads of runs in the UAE in the previous edition. He struggled to find his form in the spinning wickets in India in the first half of IPL 2021 but seemed to get better when the wickets changed. The left-hander will be one of the challenges for the CSK bowlers as well.

Quinton de Kock scored 155 runs in the first phase of the IPL 2021 at an average of 31 and he excelled at times but he will need to convert his starts into a big score this time and this will be the right scenario for him to show his skills.

The Proteas batsman has been a spectacular batting form, which was visible during the recent Sri Lanka vs South Africa T20I series. Quinton De Kock had a terrific 2020 season, scoring 503 runs including four half-centuries at the top in UAE, and will look to perform in a similar fashion in the UAE leg.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in recent times in the world at the moment and he showed his class in the recently concluded red-ball Test series against England. He finished as the highest wicket-taker for India in the four Tests and picked up 18 wickets. In his prime form, Jasprit Bumrah has been one of the match-winners for the Mumbai Indians and has bowled splendidly in the India leg of IPL 2021 as well.

The right-arm quick was superb in the previous edition IPL 2020 in UAE too by being the 2nd highest wicket-taker and he enjoyed the conditions really well. He used the pace of the wickets to his advantage and executed the yorkers to perfection. He will be one of the candidates for the man of the match in the first game against CSK and he relishes the challenge against big teams.

In the first leg of IPL 2021, the right-arm pacer with an unorthodox action scalped 6 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 32 and an economy of 7.11. In the previous season in IPL 2020, he picked 27 scalps in 15 games averaging an awesome 14.96, and was 2nd highest wicket-taker.

Arun Dhumal Rubbished Reports In Media About Virat Kohli’s Stepping Down In ODIs, T20Is

Arun Dhumal, BCCI treasurer on Monday rubbished reports suggesting that Team India captain Virat Kohli is likely to step down as skipper of the limited-overs format after the conclusion of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

There are reports doing the rounds that Virat Kohli might lose his white-ball captaincy and Rohit Sharma could be asked to lead the limited-overs side if the team fails to win the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in the UAE and Oman in October-November this year.

Arun Dhumal Terms Reports In Media About Virat Kohli’s Stepping Down As Rubbish

However, Arun Dhumal rubbished such claims. Virat Kohli (32), who currently leads the team across all formats and is India’s most successful captain ever, is learned to have taken the call to share leadership responsibilities with Rohit Sharma (34), according to the BCCI sources.

“This is all rubbish. Nothing (as) such is happening. This is all that you guys (media) are talking about. BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue (split captaincy),” Arun Dhumal told IANS. “Virat will remain as the captain (of all formats).”

Earlier, it was reported that Virat Kohli has been very successful in Test cricket, but the onus of leading the side in limited-overs cricket could fall on Rohit Sharma because of the former’s failure to guide the side to victory in ICC events despite having some of the best bowlers and batters in the game.

Earlier, it was said that the reason for Virat Kohli purportedly stepping down as captain is very simple. Virat Kohli feels that his batting across formats needs more time and greater impetus as India is looking to play two World Cups in 2022 and 2023.

Arun Dhumal Rubbishes Claims That BCCI Top Brass Are Unhappy In WTC Final Loss

Sources had said the BCCI top brass has been discussing the issue since India’s loss to New Zealand in the World Test Championship final in England, where they were reportedly unhappy with the Indian skipper’s team selection. Virat Kohli had played two spinners in seamer-friendly and overcast conditions during the WTC final.

But Arun Dhumal said, “no such meeting took place.” “Virat will remain as the captain (of all formats),” he added.

For a while now there have been reports suggesting that BCCI could explore the option of split captaincy between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after the T20 World Cup 2021. However, BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal confirmed that Virat Kohli will remain the captain for all formats.

One of India’s most successful captains, Virat Kohli led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins and 27 defeats. In 45 T20Is so far where he has been the captain, India has won 27 times while losing 14 times. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, 34, has led India 10 times in ODIs and led them to victories on eight occasions. In T20Is, he has captained them 19 times of which they have won 15 and lost four.

Rohit Sharma is in the form of his life across formats and enjoys the status of a senior member of the squad. His T20 captaincy records are second to none, having won five IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians apart from Asia Cup and Nidhas Trophy 2018 wins in Virat Kohli’s absence. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and India team management have had meetings in the past few months over the change of guard, at least in white-ball cricket.

Salman Butt Feels It’s Not The Proper Time To Rake Up The Captaincy Debate Between Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma

Salman Butt said with a successful Test series in England and a crucial T20 World Cup looming, this is not the time to rake up the captaincy debate.

Following reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unhappy with some of Virat Kohli’s decisions during the World Test Championship (WTC) final, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt said that the Indian skipper is being made a target of a “dirty game”.

Salman Butt Feels It’s Not The Proper Time To Discuss Captaincy

Salman Butt was responding to a recent news report that also claimed that Virat Kohli could be asked to make way for Rohit Sharma as captain if India fails to perform well in the ICC World T20 competition. The former Pakistan captain further said with a successful Test series in England and a crucial T20 World Cup looming, this is not the time to rake up the captaincy debate.

“Do you see the timing of this news? I don’t have a problem with what the board thinks, it’s about their own evaluation of who can take their cricket forward… but is this the time to discuss these things? Now there’s talk of Virat Kohli’s captaincy being on the danger line,” Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“He’s (Virat) recently played a series in England, led his team really well, he was being criticized for his team selections but he’s constantly backing his team and in turn, the team is responding to him and playing good cricket… the team is at the top in every format and the World Cup is right up front, so such news surfacing in the media is nothing but a dirty game.”

One of India’s most successful captains, Virat Kohli led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins and 27 defeats. In 45 T20Is so far where he has been the captain, India has won 27 times while losing 14 times.

Salman Butt: Virat Kohli Has Done A Lot Of Good As Captain In Indian Cricket

Asked about comparing the white-ball trophies won by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Salman Butt said the latter is a very good captain but the former, too, has a decent win percentage across formats.

“I have said this before, Rohit Sharma is a very good captain, very successful, but this is not the time to talk about these things… Trophies matter, I agree but see the percentage of the games he has won and how successful he has been around the world. I think this is not the time and the guy has done a lot of good to Indian cricket. This news resurfacing is nothing but bad intent which shouldn’t happen.”

Rohit Sharma has also inspired the team in Virat Kohli’s absence to memorable triumphs in Asia Cup 2018 and Nidahas Trophy 2018, besides leading Mumbai Indians to an unprecedented five IPL titles. Rohit Sharma, 34, has led India 10 times in ODIs and led them to victories on eight occasions. In T20Is, he has captained them 19 times of which they have won 15 and lost four.

Rohit Sharma has proven his mettle as the most successful captain in the Indian Premier League. The hitman Rohit Sharma has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to victory in the seasons 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

One of the biggest criticisms of Virat Kohli’s captaincy is his failure to land a major ICC trophy since taking over the charge of the team. Recently, in June, India lost in the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand in Southampton. India’s all-format captain Virat Kohli will soon quit ODI and T20 captaincy.

Virat Kohli will quit as India’s white-ball captain right after the T20 World Cup and IPL’s most successful skipper Rohit Sharma will take over the mantle. However, on Monday, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal rubbished the reports.

Virat Kohli May Step Down As Limited-Overs Skipper And Pave Way For Rohit Sharma After T20I WC 2021

Virat Kohli, the regular Indian all format skipper is likely to step down as the white-ball (ODI & T20Is) captain after the T20 World Cup in October-November, paving the way for Rohit Sharma to take up the responsibility.

The script for Team India’s white-ball story is set to undergo a huge change in the coming months.

Virat Kohli May Step Down As Limited Overs Skipper To Concentrate On His Batting

Virat Kohli (32), who currently leads the team across all formats and is India’s most successful captain ever, is learned to have taken the call to share leadership responsibilities with Rohit Sharma (34), according to the BCCI sources. Virat Kohli has had prolonged discussions with Rohit Sharma and the team management over the last few months, particularly after Team India’s triumph in Australia, one that coincided with Virat Kohli becoming a father.

“Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world,” sources said.

While this development is going to create a huge buzz in the media and social media, BCCI has been busy gearing up for this moment.

“We realize spin-masters will be at work, giving their own twists to these developments. That’s the reason BCCI is planning this well in advance. In the end, Virat and Rohit are on the same page,” the sources revealed.

It was first reported about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s growing camaraderie and renewed friendship in March this year and how the long quarantines and isolation windows had brought the two ‘alpha males’ in the dressing room closer than ever. Virat Kohli feels his batting, across formats, needs more time and greater impetus as Team India looks at two World Cups – T20 and ODI – between 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Between 2018 and now, he’s led India to some historic Test wins in Australia and England, and his team now stands on the brink of repeating a similar feat in South Africa should India succeed on that tour in the coming months.

“It will wrap up a historic Test cycle from an India perspective. Virat is also the first to realize that his overall responsibilities as captain across formats are taking a toll on his batting. He needs that space and freshness because he has a lot more to offer.

“If Rohit takes over as white-ball captain, Virat can continue leading India’s red-ball aspirations and work on his T20 and One-day batting. He’s just 32 and given his fitness, he will easily play top cricket for another five to six years at least,” say those in the know.

Rohit Sharma has also inspired the team in Virat Kohli’s absence to memorable triumphs in Asia Cup and Nidahas Trophy, besides leading Mumbai Indians to an unprecedented five IPL titles.

Rohit Sharma’s Time Has Arrived At Captaining Indian White Ball Limited Overs Team: BCCI Sources

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is in the form of his life across formats and enjoys the status as a senior member of the squad. His T20 captaincy records are second to none, having won five IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians, and the fact that he happens to be among the world’s best white-ball openers is not lost on anyone.

“If he had to ever take over as white-ball captain, that time is now. And it’s going to be a win-win for the Indian team because the two senior cricketers are so well in tune with each other,” said a source.

Of course, Rohit Sharma will have to ensure he maintains top-level fitness. Virat Kohli has led by example on that front. For the record, MS Dhoni coming aboard as a mentor has nothing to do with the captaincy.

“MS has come as a mentor because his mere presence in the dugout will help the team strategize better. When you have such resources at your disposal, why not use them at the opportune moment,” BCCI sources said.

MS Dhoni had stepped down as Test skipper in 2014 in Australia, with BCCI handing over the reins to Virat Kohli. The Delhi dasher became the leader in all formats in 2017 when MS Dhoni stepped down from that role as well.
