Kevin Pietersen Backed Rohit Sharma To Take Over As India Test Skipper

Kevin Pietersen has backed ‘great leader’ Rohit Sharma to take over as India Test captain while suggesting that “harsh” bio-bubble life could be one of the reasons for Virat Kohli quitting the captaincy.

Virat Kohli shocked the cricketing world when he announced his decision to quit the Test captaincy. It came a day after India lost a 3-match Test series to relatively inexperienced South Africa in South Africa. Virat Kohli brought an end to his 8-year tenure as Test captain during which he emerged as India’s most successful skipper in the longest format of the game, by winning 40 Tests out of 68 which he captained.

Kevin Pietersen Will Probably Stick With Rohit Sharma As He Loves The Authority He Commands

Rohit Sharma was recently appointed as the vice-captain of India’s Test team but he was not part of the recently-concluded 3-match series in South Africa due to a hamstring injury. Rohit Sharma took over after Ajinkya Rahane was sacked from the role as Test vice-captain over a dip in form. KL Rahul was then assigned the role and he led India in the 2nd Test when Virat Kohli was injured and the ODI series that followed.

Kevin Pietersen said that Rohit Sharma makes fabulous decisions as a captain and his record with Mumbai Indians speaks volumes about that. Rohit Sharma is the designated Test vice-captain and by natural progression, if all goes well and he is fit, Rohit Sharma will be leading India in Test cricket.

“You (India) are so lucky that you have so many options for the captain. I will probably stick with Rohit Sharma. He is a great leader, I love the authority he commands. He makes fabulous decisions and we’ve seen them with Mumbai Indians, he has won so many titles with them. More importantly, I am really looking forward to how Rahul Dravid is with that team – can he do it with the youngsters, can he do it with the big guys,” Kevin Pietersen said.

Rohit Sharma, who was named ODI captain earlier this month replacing Virat Kohli, was to travel to South Africa as vice-captain for the Test series which began on December 26 but a hamstring injury during training ruled him out. He had taken charge as T20I captain against New Zealand last month.

Mumbai Indians-the most successful franchise in the history of the IPL has won five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, all under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

Kevin Pietersen Isn’t Shocked At Virat Kohli’s Decision To Quit As Test Skipper

Kevin Pietersen said he was not surprised when Virat Kohli quit the captaincy of all formats. With 40 wins and 17 losses in 68 Tests as captain, Virat Kohli is India’s most successful Test leader.

“Virat is an entertainer and for any athlete, it is very difficult to live in these bio bubbles. It does not just take a toll on the players but their families too. Something had to burst and the bubbles have to burst sometime or another. Virat is an entertainer and these bubbles may have taken a couple of years away from Virat’s career. As a player, if you give me no crowd it is very difficult to play. So I am not shocked (at Virat’s decision) When the crowds do come back, you watch Virat Kohli go again,” Pietersen added.

Virat Kohli on Saturday announced that he is stepping down as the captain of the Indian Test team. Last year, the 33-year-old had stepped down as the T20I captain and then he was removed as the ODI leader as the selectors wanted one captain for the white-ball format.

The disappointment of not being able to win a Test series in South Africa in two attempts (2017-18 and 2021-22) as captain and the personal form of not being able to score a Test hundred in 2 years may have cluttered his mind for long and made him take this decision.

Rajagopal Sathish Lodges Police Complaint After Claiming He Was Offered INR 40 Lakhs To Fix TNPL Matches

Rajagopal Sathish, a 40-year-old, lodged a police complaint in Bengaluru, claiming he was offered a sum of 40 lakh to fix matches. As per a report, Rajagopal Satish told the police he was approached by an Instagram user, who goes by the name Bunny Anand.  The report further stated that Rajagopal Satish didn’t take the money.

Rajagopal Sathish has played for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy and was also part of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.  He now plays for Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

Rajagopal Satish Offered INR 40 Lakh By Bunny Anand To fix TNPL Matches

As per the report, the police believe the money was offered to fix matches in TNPL, before adding that the cricketer had also approached the cricket governing body, BCCI, in this regard.

“On January 3, a person named Bunny Anand contacted Satish on Instagram and messaged him luring to pay 40 lakh and told that two players have already agreed to the offer,” the complaint read.

The 41-year-old Rajagopal Sathish was part of the Chepauk Super Gillies squad that won the TNPL 2021. The former Tamil Nadu player has also been part of Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Meanwhile, a special team has been formed to catch the accused, who police are suspecting to be in Bengaluru.

Rajagopal Satish Played 34 IPL Games, The Last Of Which Came In 2016

Rajagopal Sathish has also played 41 first-class games and 57 List A games. He was also a part of the now-defunct unsanctioned Indian Cricket League. Rajagopal Sathish played 34 matches in the IPL and scored 270 runs at an average of 15.88 and a strike rate of 116.88. He last played an IPL game in the year 2016.

Rohit Sharma Is Expected To Be Ready For West Indies Limited-Overs Series

Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain is recovering well from his left hamstring injury and has a bright chance of making a comeback for the six-match home limited-overs series against the West Indies next month.

Rohit Sharma, who was also the designated Test vice-captain for the tour of South Africa, sustained a left hamstring strain during a net session just prior to the team’s departure for the tour and had to pull out.

Rohit Sharma Is Expected To Be Ready For West Indies 3 ODI And 3 T20I Series After Missing Entire Proteas Tour For Hamstring Injury

He was subsequently also forced to skip the ODIs in South Africa, starting this Wednesday, as he couldn’t attain full fitness before the selection committee announced the team.

“Rohit’s rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is going pretty well. He is expected to be okay for the West Indies series. It’s still close to three weeks from now before the first ODI is played in Ahmedabad on February 6,” a BCCI source privy to developments said on conditions of anonymity.

The series against the West Indies comprises three ODIs and as many T20 internationals. The one-dayers will be played from February 6 to 12, followed by the T20Is from February 15 to 20.

The hamstring has been a recurrent problem for Rohit Sharma which also forced him to miss the first two Test matches as well as the white-ball leg of the tour of Australia in 2020-21. He did make a comeback for the final two Tests after serving a two-week hard quarantine in Sydney for the last two Test matches.

Currently, as per BCCI’s policy, each and every player has to mandatorily appear for fitness tests at the NCA before being awarded ‘fit to play’ certificates. The selection committee is informed about their availability only after this exercise. With Virat Kohli now having relinquished captaincy even from the Test format, there is a greater need for Rohit Sharma to remain injury-free in the current set-up.

Rohit Sharma Is In Excellent Form And Is Tipped To Be All-Time Skipper Despite Fitness Concerns And More Age

It has been an open secret in recent years that apart from being one of the best performers across formats, Rohit Sharma has been a few notches above his peers in terms of acceptance of one and all in this team. Having learned the ropes of captaincy handling Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Rohit Sharma’s man-management is seen closer to MS Dhoni’s style.

Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians created history as they won the IPL title for the fifth time, with Rohit winning it for the sixth time. , BCCI/IPL Twitter handle.

While KL Rahul, because of his age, is being considered a long-term all-format leader, something which might also have the backing of head coach Rahul Dravid, what will go in Rohit Sharma’s favour, despite the fitness and age concern, is his excellent form across formats.

“Rohit Sharma should be the bridge before BCCI is confident about the next young India captain that they want the team to lead for at least five years. This ICC World Test Championship cycle should be about giving it to an experienced hand rather than someone, whose leadership credentials aren’t proven enough,” a senior BCCI official said.

Rohit Sharma has been advised by experts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to reduce weight. The reason is his slimmer version will put less pressure on his troublesome hamstring & knee. The injured knee & hamstring has led him to miss a few matches of IPL 2021, India Tour of Australia & now the ongoing India tour of South Africa.

Rohit Sharma is currently working very hard at the NCA. He is currently training with his India teammates Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson among other cricketers.

Marco Jansen Opens Up On His Altercation With Jasprit Bumrah In 2nd And 3rd Test

Marco Jansen, the South Africa left-arm seamer on Monday opened up on his altercation with India pace-spearhead Jasprit Bumrah during the Johannesburg Test.

South Africa left-arm seamer Marco Jansen opened up on his duel with India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the recently-concluded 3 match Test series won by South Africa, saying there were no hard feelings because they were acting in the heat of the moment.

Marco Jansen: Altercation With Jasprit Bumrah Was In The Heat Of The Moment

Jasprit Bumrah and Marco Jansen were part of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 but, both players were involved in a heated altercation in the 2nd Test.

Marco Jansen reciprocated Jasprit Bumrah’s short balls by peppering bouncers at him before both got involved in a heated exchange during the second innings at Johannesburg. Jasprit Bumrah then reacted with a stare after dismissing the South Africa pacer in the first innings of the third Test.

“Obviously, it felt good to have gotten a chance in the Test team and then to contribute to the side’s cause. I did not expect to do that well in the series. Very glad that we won the series 2-1. India has not won a Test series in our conditions, glad that we could maintain that record,” Jansen said during a virtual press conference.

“The first innings of the first Test sums it up really well. I did not start the way I wanted to and I was very nervous. It is normal for every player to get nervous. Off the field, I am a chill guy, I am an introvert but when I am on the field, I want to express myself,” he added.

When asked about his aggressive nature on the field, Jansen said: “I love this sport, I have wanted to play since I was a child. All the emotions show how much love and passion I have for the game. Obviously, I played with Jasprit Bumrah in the IPL, we are good friends but sometimes on the field, things get heated.”

“You play for your country, you are not going to back down for anyone and obviously, he plays the same way as well. There are no hard feelings, it just happened in the heat of the moment (on altercation with Bumrah in the Johannesburg Test),” he added.

“Obviously, we are taking momentum from the Test series into the ODIs. But we are not underestimating India at all, India is one of the best teams in the world so we have to bring our A-game. We are looking to take the fight to them. We have to be as prepared as we can, a series win against India would be big.”

South Africa and India will lock horns in a three-match ODI series, with the first match set to be played on Wednesday in Paarl where Marco Jansen got his maiden limited-overs call-up. Earlier, the Proteas had successfully defeated India 2-1 in the Test series. Marco Jansen had a good show with the ball as he went on to take 19 wickets in the Test series.

Marco Jansen had played in two matches picking 2 scalps for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 before his debut for South Africa. In his debut Test series, he is already 2nd highest wicket-taker after Kagiso Rabada (20) with 19 wickets averaging 16.47.

Jasprit Bumrah Too Played Down On-Field Altercation With Marco Jansen

Jasprit Bumrah too had played down last week’s on-field altercation with Marco Jansen and the palpable nervous energy that has followed in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. He said the argument ‘ended’ in Johannesburg (2nd Test) and the duo had “moved on in life”

Jasprit Bumrah and Marco Jansen, former teammates at the Mumbai Indians, were involved in a heated exchange in the middle of the pitch in the second Test. The incident took place after the South African hit Jasprit Bumrah on the body with a few bouncers.

The Indian pacer got his revenge on Wednesday(3rd Test) by softening Marco Jansen with a short-ball barrage and then clean-bowling him for 7. He even followed it with a cold stare, but no words were exchanged between them.

Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan And Shubman Gill Set To Be Part Of Ahmedabad Franchise In IPL 2022

Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill are set to be a part of the Ahmedabad franchise for the upcoming IPL 2022 season.
The Ahmedabad franchise, which was bought last October by CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd), has also finalized its coaching staff – they will be led by former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra, and former South Africa batter and head coach Gary Kirsten.
Former England batter Vikram Solanki, who is currently Surrey’s head coach, will be the team director. This is the second IPL franchise where the trio will work together: the previous instance was at Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Hardik Pandya And Rashid Khan All Set To Play Together For Ahmedabad Franchise

Ahmedabad and Lucknow, the two new franchises participating in the IPL 2022, are yet to disclose the players they have bought but the deadline for doing so is fast approaching- January 22.  Both teams were given the same purse – INR 90 crore – the same as the existing eight franchises.
However, unlike the other teams, which could retain four players, the two new ones can buy a maximum of three players with the overseas slot limited to one. It has been learned that Ahmedabad has decided to pay both Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan the same amount – INR 15 crore.
It is also learned that Hardik Pandya is likely to take charge as Ahmedabad captain, a first experience for the allrounder in the IPL. The third player – Shubman Gill – will be paid INR 7 crore. This means the franchise will go into the auction in February with a purse of INR 53 crore.
Hardik Pandya’s rise, since he was bought as an uncapped player for a mere INR 10 lakh in 2015, has been exponential. By 2018, he had established himself as the best allrounder in India and Mumbai duly retained him as their second pick at the auction that year, paying INR 11 crore.
This is the first time Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan will play for the same team in the IPL, having previously represented Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Hardik Pandya is a four-time title-winner. However, Hardik Pandya struggled with fitness issues over the last two IPLs and did not bowl at all in this period. His batting, too, hasn’t been as effective as before.
Rashid Khan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI)
Rashid Khan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI)
That forced Mumbai to look in a different direction as they retained the in-form Suryakumar Yadav, who has proven he can bat and accelerate at any position. Hardik Pandya is currently focussing on regaining complete fitness and has not been part of any of the Indian white-ball squads since the 2021 T20I World Cup.
As for Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan legspinner became a big talking point immediately after Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to retain Kane Williamson, who will be full-time captain from IPL 2022, along with the uncapped Jammu & Kashmir pairing of Abdul Samad and Umran Malik.
In 2017, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Rashid Khan for INR 4 crore and, a year later, they retained him for INR 9 crore. Remarkably, Rashid Khan featured in all 76 matches played by Sunrisers Hyderabad since his debut, picking up 93 wickets at an economy rate of 6.33. Only Jasprit Bumrah has taken more wickets (104) than Rashid Khan in the last five IPL seasons.
Sunrisers Hyderabad wanted to keep Rashid Khan, so they told him that he would be their second pick behind Kane Williamson. The talks got derailed thereafter, which freed Rashid Khan to weigh up his options, including going into the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Shubman Gill Also Set To Be A Part Of Ahmedabad Franchise In IPL 2022

For Shubman Gill, this will be his second team in the IPL having been picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 auction for INR 1.8 crore. The 22-year old, who has already played 10 Tests and three ODIs, has been earmarked as one of the brightest young talents of this decade, and at one point was even looked upon as a future leader by the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Shubman Gill (Image Credit: Twitter)
Shubman Gill (Image Credit: Twitter)
However, the Kolkata Knight Riders had several other options when it came to the retention and Shubman Gill had to be left out. Shubman Gill was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and he was let go by the franchise as the franchise retained Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell instead.
Ahmedabad’s third choice Ishan Kishan didn’t work out and they zeroed in on Shubman Gill, who could also be seen as a potential captaincy candidate.

James Pattinson Set For A 3rd Stint With Nottinghamshire

James Pattinson, the former Australia pacer is set for a third stint with Nottinghamshire after signing an all-format deal covering the 2022 season.

James Pattinson previously spent parts of the 2017 and 2019 seasons with the county, taking 40 First-Class wickets at 15.52. James Pattinson is a British passport holder but has been registered as an overseas player.

James Pattinson Set For The 3rd Stint With Nottinghamshire

The right-arm fast bowler announced his retirement from international cricket in October 2021, having played 21 Tests and 19 white-ball internationals (15 ODIs, 4 T20Is) for his country. His 81 Test wickets at 26.33 apiece included five in a thrilling Ashes encounter at Trent Bridge in 2013.

James Pattinson’s elder brother Darren Pattinson, who made a one-off Test appearance for England in 2008, won the County Championship title with Nottinghamshire in 2010.

“Trent Bridge felt like home from the moment I first stepped through the gates. To arrive here and be met by a group of guys that made me so welcome from minute dot was pretty special, and I’m looking forward to getting back amongst them again,” said Pattinson in a statement.

“The bowling group did some special things last season. Hopefully I can add something to that and help the club enjoy some success in the coming years,” he added.

James Pattinson first joined the Green and Golds at the start of their success-laden 2017 season, taking 32 wickets at 12.06 with the red ball.

James Pattinson Had Two Stints With Nottinghamshire In 2017 And 2019

On his debut against Leicestershire at Grace Road, he scored a career-best 89 not out, adding 122 for the eighth wicket with Stuart Broad, as well as claiming match figures of 8-84.

“We first recruited James in 2017 because we believed he possessed the two qualities you always look for in an overseas signing: tremendous pedigree and the desire to commit fully to life at the club,” said Head Coach Peter Moores.

The pacer played in ten matches as Notts lifted the Royal London Cup, taking 13 wickets in the tournament and hitting the winning runs against Surrey at Lord’s, then returned for a brief stint in 2019. Australian fast bowler James Pattinson decided to step away from international cricket to focus on his family, continue playing for his state team, Victoria, and help nurture the next generation of fast bowlers.

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson had announced his decision to retire from international cricket in October 2021 after realizing that he won’t be in the reckoning for the Ashes 2021/22 series due to fitness issues. He had been suffering from a knee injury after a number of issues with other injuries that helped to limit his Test appearances.

He claimed 81 Test wickets, 16 ODI scalps, and 3 T20I scalps in his career after making his Test debut in December 2011 alongside Mitchell Starc and David Warner against New Zealand in Brisbane. His last Test was against New Zealand in Sydney in January 2020, while he last played an ODI back in September 2015 against England at Leeds.

His last T20I was way back in 2012. James Pattinson also eventually made his IPL debut in the 2020 season for Mumbai Indians and became a regular member. He has picked up 11 scalps in 10 IPL games averaging 29.09.

Jasprit Bumrah Played Down On Field Altercation With Marco Jansen As Both Of Them Had Moved On

Jasprit Bumrah played down last week’s on-field altercation with Marco Jansen and the palpable nervous energy that has followed in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. He said the argument ‘ended’ in Johannesburg (2nd Test) and the duo had “moved on in life”, with their present focus only being on the match at hand.

Jasprit Bumrah Said He Didn’t Have Any Conversation Marco Jansen Even Once In The 3rd Test

At the post-day press conference, Jasprit Bumrah was asked to talk about their chats. He replied that they haven’t had any on-field tiffs or “even eye contact” in this Test, adding that both teams(India and South Africa) are trying to play the way they want to.

“I don’t remember having any conversation with him even once (in this match). Whatever happened in the last game, it ended there and we have moved forward in life. In this game, I don’t remember having a discussion or even eye contact with him. But yeah we are focussing on what our team has to do, the opposition can do whatever they want to do. We are trying to follow our processes and our contributions to get the team to a good position,” Jasprit Bumrah said.

Jasprit Bumrah not only got Marco Jansen out but also took four more wickets to register his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His blistering spell of 5-42 helped India get the hosts out for 210, 13 runs short of India’s first-innings total.

Marco Jansen had played in two matches picking 2 scalps for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 before his debut for South Africa. In his debut Test series, he is already 2nd highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets averaging 17.53.

Jasprit Bumrah Didn’t Plan Anything Out Of The Ordinary As He Was Focusing On Routine Process

Jasprit Bumrah’s fifer was even more special following his lackluster outing with the ball in the previous match, with critics starting to write him off. But the pacer didn’t attribute his improved performance to this criticism, saying he didn’t pay “any extra” attention to it in the leadup to this Test and kept his focus intact on his usual preparation.

The 28-year-old said: “Nothing out of the ordinary. I was just focussing on what I had to do, my routines and my processes… or whatever has to be done when I prepare for a Test match. Nothing out of the ordinary, I was not giving any extra attention on I was not really too angry. I was just focussing on what I had to do and trying to be in the present.”

Jasprit Bumrah and South African pacer Marco Jansen were involved in a heated exchange after the latter peppered the Indian tailender with bouncers in the 2nd Test. The altercation reminded fans and experts of the Jasprit Bumrah-James Anderson verbal duel during the Lord’s Test last year.

Cheteshwar Pujara (9) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) fell cheaply again as India endured a poor start on Day 3 of the third and final Test in Centurion. Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada shared the opening dismissals on the third day as captain Virat Kohli is joined by Rishabh Pant.

A 50-run partnership came up between Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant as India is well placed at 120/4 after 41 overs, leading by 133 runs. Virat Kohli is batting on 28 off 125 balls while Rishabh Pant has batted aggressively again scoring 41 runs off 50 balls.

Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian pace spearhead penned an emotional note on his official Instagram handle to share his feelings ahead of the India-South Africa Test series decider in Cape Town.

Jasprit Bumrah Returns To Cape Town For 2021/22 Test Series Decider 4 Years After His Test Debut At The Same Venue

Jasprit Bumrah is glad to be back at Newlands as one of India’s premier fast bowlers, four years after making his Test debut at the same venue. Seeking their first series win in South Africa, India will lock horns with the hosts in the series-deciding third Test at Cape Town, Newlands from January 11-15 and he will be expected to play a pivotal role with the ball.

A nostalgic Jasprit Bumrah shared the following post on his official Instagram account and captioned it: “Cape Town, January 2018 – is where it all began for me in Test cricket. Four years on, I’ve grown as a player and a person and to return to this ground brings back special memories.”

Jasprit Bumrah made his Test debut at Newlands in Cape Town four years ago against South Africa. He made an instant impact in the first innings by uprooting the stumps of legendary batter AB de Villiers. He bowled a wonderful spell (3/39) in the second innings to showcase his talent in foreign conditions on the global stage. Despite a brilliant display from the Indian bowlers, the visitors eventually lost the match by 72 runs.

The Indian team lost that match but Jasprit Bumrah took a five-wicket haul in the Johannesburg Test to help the visitors to a fine win. He finished that series with 14 wickets in three matches. He has since grown into the team’s leading pacer, picking up more than 100 wickets in overseas conditions.

Jasprit Bumrah has taken 107 wickets in just 26 matches and played a role in India’s major wins in England and Australia. Interestingly, he has only played two Test matches at home so far.

Aakash Chopra: It Was A Rare Off Day For Indian Pace Duo Of Jasprit Bumrah And Mohammed Shami On 4th Day Of 2nd Test

Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra opined that Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami had rare off days in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test. Aakash Chopra felt that their performances were nowhere near the lofty standards the duo have set in recent times.

Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel while reviewing the Indian bowling following their defeat in the second Test, Aakash Chopra said: “We saw a rare off day from the pace attack. It was slightly an off Test match for Bumrah, it was slightly an off Test match for Shami as well. The performance was not up to the standards we have seen.”

The series decider between India and South Africa will commence on January 11 in Cape Town. India began the Test series on a rousing note, winning the opener at Centurion by 113 runs before succumbing to a seven-wicket defeat in the second Test at Johannesburg.

Powered by an unbeaten 96 from captain and opener Dean Elgar, the hosts overhauled the target of 240 for the loss of just three wickets and also ended India’s unbeaten run at The Wanderers. Jasprit Bumrah returned with figures of 17-2-70-0 while Mohammed Shami returned with figures of 17-3-55-1.

Experienced pacer Anrich Nortje will miss the ODIs as well after being left out of the Tests due to a hip injury. Wayne Parnell, Sisanda Magala, and Zubayr Hamza also retained their spots in the squad which also includes former skipper Quinton de Kock, who retired from Test cricket following the loss in the first Test against India.

Marco Jansen had 4/55 in 13.3 overs to end with figures of 5/124 in his debut Test match which included the prized scalp of Virat Kohli. Marco Jansen played in two matches picking 2 scalps for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 before his debut for South Africa.

“This is a very exciting group and the Selection Panel and I are eager to see what they will produce,” CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang said.

“For many of our players, it does not get bigger than playing against this powerhouse Indian team and this will be the biggest series of their young lives so far. We are looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table and wish Temba (Bavuma) and Mark (Boucher) all the best for the series.”

The left-arm seamer, Marco Jansen received his maiden call-up to the ODI squad, while seamer Anrich Nortje has been deemed unfit after not recovering from his hip injury. Dwaine Pretorius, who recently had a good outing in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE, returned to the squad alongside all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo.

In the ongoing 2nd Test between the two teams, India is placed on 53/3 before lunch. KL Rahul is captaining the team in place of Virat Kohli who has upper back spasms.

Alviro Petersen Shocked Over Quinton de Kock’s Sudden Test Retirement After Playing 54 Tests

Alviro Petersen, the former South Africa opener is shocked with Quinton de Kock’s sudden retirement from Test cricket and feels more players might follow in the footsteps of the wicketkeeper-batter in the near future.

At just 29 years of age and having played 54 Tests, Quinton de Kock announced his retirement from the traditional format at the end of the opening Test against India, which the Proteas lost by 113 runs at SuperSport Park on Thursday. Cricket fans reacted in shock after South Africa’s Quinton de Kock announced his retirement from Test cricket on Thursday.

Alviro Petersen Shocked By Quinton de Kock’s Sudden Retirement From Tests

Quinton de Kock would, however, be available for ODIs and T20s in the future. Quinton de Kock had scored 34 runs in the first innings of the Centurion Test, followed by 21 in the second. Quinton de Kock played 54 Test matches for South Africa, scoring 3,300 runs with six centuries and 22 half-centuries. He also effected 232 dismissals (221 catches and 11 stumpings) behind the wicket.

“To be honest, I am a bit shocked by his decision,” said Alviro Petersen, who played in 36 Tests for South Africa, scoring five centuries, largely as opening partner to Graeme Smith.

“During the lunch break of day five in Centurion, I noticed that he was not quite 100 percent because Quinny is a player who likes to play his shots,” Alviro Petersen was quoted.

“Often when there is stuff happening with family or you are on a long tour, one foot is always on the plane and I had the sense that with him it was almost like one foot was already at home.”

Alviro Petersen was a right-handed opening batsman who could not do justice to his batting talent. The cool-headed batsman made a relatively late entry to the Test cricket at the age of 30, nine years after his professional debut, and could cement his place in the Proteas squad only after 2012.

However, Alviro Petersen suffered in his career because of inconsistency and tough competition from Jacques Rudolph for the opening slot. The opener, by all means, deserved to play more than the 36 Tests and 21 ODIs he played for South Africa.

Quinton de Kock Will However Continue Playing In The White Ball Formats For The Proteas With An Eye On Franchise Based T20 Leagues

A former Test captain, Quinton de Kock said he will continue playing in the white-ball formats for the Proteas, with a lot of focus on franchise-based T20 leagues. The former Mumbai Indians man should have been away from national duty on paternity leave for the last 2 Tests but has now decided to call it a day from the longest format of cricket.

“I am surprised but you can also understand that all the lucrative T20 leagues around the world and The Hundred (franchise 100-ball cricket tournament in the UK) now have changed the mindset of players,” Petersen said.

“In the past, Test cricket was the pinnacle and slowly that is being changed with guys looking after their financial wellbeing. Priorities have changed and he won’t struggle to get a T20 or The Hundred contract.”

Quinton de Kock has featured in Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai Indians squad in the IPL. Quinton de Kock’s retirement means South Africa will have a new wicket-keeper in their playing XI in the last two games of the ongoing Test series against India. The Proteas have Kyle Verreynne and Ryan Rickelton as the other two wicket-keeping options in the squad.
