Bouncing back strongly from two consecutive defeats, Kolkata Knight Riders routed Delhi Daredevils by 71 runs to get back to winning ways.
Set 198 runs to win, Delhi were off to the worst possible start. Even before they could start thinking of the chase, they were three down. Delhi’s last match hero Jason Roy departed in the very first over. Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir also failed to get going as Delhi were reduced to 24 for 3.
Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell then took charge of the chase. The duo mixed caution with aggression as Delhi finished the powerplay on 56 for 3. The duo then hit a flurry of boundaries to bring back Delhi in the game. However, the hosts once again came back on top after Pant hit a well-timed shot straight to Piyush Chawla near the boundary ropes. The southpaw scored 43 off 26. 11 runs later, Rahul Tewatia departed too after scoring 1 as Delhi were five down with just 97 on the board.
Maxwell threatened to break lose but was sent back by Kuldeep Yadav after he tried to hit the spinner for the third consecutive six. The Australian scored 47 off 22.
Sunil Narine then all but sealed the game by dismissing Chris Morris and Vijay Shankar inside an over to reduce Delhi to 117 for 8. Delhi were eventually out for 129.
Earlier in the game Andre Russell played a whirlwind knock while Nitish Rana scored a brilliant fifty to guide the hosts to a huge 200 for 9.
Asked to bat first, Kolkata were off to a poor and slow star. Sunil Narine failed to deliver with the bat and could score just 1 before being sent back by Trent Boult.
Robin Uthappa then played some big shots to give the innings the much-needed impetus. The right-handed batsman, however, could not last long, departing after scoring 35 off 19. Chris Lynn, who was struggling to play his attacking game, soon departed after playing an uncharacteristic 29-ball 31- runs knock.
Nitish Rana and Dinesh Kathik then went after Delhi’s bowling to lay the foundation for a good total. The duo played shots all around as Kolkata entered the three digits in the 12th over. Karthik, however, did not last long and departed after playing a stroke-filled knock of 19.
It was followed by Andre Russell’s arrival and the Eden Gardens was set on fire. The West Indies allrounder, who had scored 88 off 36 against Super Kings, came out all guns blazing. He hit six sixes to race away to 41 off just 11 before being bowled by Boult. Rana went on to score 59 off 35 as Kolkata finished on 200.
