Jason Roy starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 91 to help Delhi Daredevils defeat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets.
Set a daunting 195, Delhi needed a quickfire start and Jason Roy provided them the perfect start. The England opener took the attack to the opposition while Gautam Gambhir played the role of second fiddle. As a result, Delhi raced away to fifty in just 50 overs. Mustafizur Rahman then allowed Mumbai to claw their way back by dismissing Gambhir.
However, it did not bring any respite for the hosts as Rishabh Pant tore them apart. The youngster smashed 47 off just 25 to keep the chase on track. In the meantime, Roy completed his fifty. Krunal Pandya broke the stand between Roy and Pant by dismissing the latter.
Glenn Maxwell also started in the same fashion, hitting a four and a six before falling after Hardik Pandya took a blinder. The scoreboard at that time was reading 135 for 3 in 13.2 overs.
Roy and Shreyas Iyer then took Delhi close. They were also aided by some poor fielding by the hosts. The equation was finally down to 11 off the final over. Roy then hit a four and a six off the first two balls to all but seal the game. Delhi eventually reached the target on the last ball.
Earlier in the game, a blistering start from Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav propelled Mumbai to a daunting 194 for 7.
Sent in to bat first, Mumbai were off to a flyer with Yadav and Lewis coming all out all guns blazing against a hapless Delhi Daredevils attack. They fired on all cylinders right from the start as Mumbai reached 50 in just the fourth over. At the end of the powerplay, the scoreboard was reading a daunting 84 for no loss. It took Mumbai only 8.3 overs to enter the triple figures.
Rahul Tewatia then dismissed both of them in quick succession to reduce Mumbai to 109 for 2 and pull back things for Delhi. However, Ishan Kishan played a quickfire innings off 44 off just 22 to give Mumbai the momentum back.
But the pendulum soon swung in Delhi’s favour after Dan Christian took two wickets off consecutive balls. He first castled Kishan (44 off 22) before cleaning up Kieron Pollard for a duck. Mumbai kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and as a result failed to end strongly.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the innings:
Jason Roy Has Done It. People Must Have Seen Explosive Batting, But This Has To Be One Of The Cleverest Batting Ever. Dodging The Good Balls, Smoking The Bad Ones Out Of The Park. Delhi Daredevils Beat Mumbai Indians By 7 Wickets. ???#MIvDD #MIvsDD #IPL2018

Never expected Jason Roy to play so sensibly (except the last 4 balls). Well done @JasonRoy20. Thanks for this victory. #IPL2018 #MIvDD

Jason Roy wins it for Delhi in pulsating last ball finish. 3 defeats in a row for Mumbai, which is unusual, and 2at home, which is very rare

Wankhede the new Chinnaswamy? No total seems safe. Jason Roy was at the receiving end against West Indies at the WT20 in 2016.

Abysmal, horrendous catching and fielding by Mumbai Indians today… this combined with their batting losing steam in death overs would be their undoing in this match! #MIvDD #IPL2018 @mipaltan

Superb catches by Pollard and Hardik bring Mumbai back into match. But those really were poor strikes played by Pant and Maxwell #IPL2018

6, 4 and followed it with a single. Rohan should be concerned. SunnyG might include Rishabh Pant in his will. #ipl

Jason Roy is tonking it left right and centre. Yes that’s an accepted technical cricket term.

Captains in this IPL are clueless about their bowling options in powerplay. The general tactic is to give everyone an over and hope for the best.

Made no sense attacking Fizz having just got so many of Hardik. Gambhir probably had some weird ideas, can't hoick if not picking a bowler.

Flat Wankhede track. After Mumbai's rousing start Delhi will be happy to chase sub-200 score. All eyes on young Mayank Markande! #IPL2018
