Sundar

The wrist and finger spin combination of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar is ready to rock in this year’s Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Recently, the duo helped India win the recently concluded Nidahas Trophy. Especially, Sundar was of top-notch bowling in the powerplays.

As a result, Virat Kohli will turn to the duo, especially in the powerplay, when they start their campaign in Kolkata on April 8. Kohli is known to back his spinner, has found the ideal combination in Chahal and Sundar.

While Sundar, with his length and ability to turn the ball, is also economical, Chahal- the wrist spinner- is a proven match-winner.

I’m an off-spinner and he’s a leg-spinner and that adds a lot of variety to the attack. It is a very good combination provided we bowl well in tandem. (After the Sri Lanka series) I hope we continue to do that with RCB as well,” Sundar said.

Speaking on same lines of Sundar, Chahal pointed out that now they have more options in the powerplays.

In Sri Lanka, he (Sundar) bowled in the powerplay and I bowled in the middle overs. So we have more options. In the previous seasons, I used to bowl in the powerplay and would just be left with two overs. Now we have one more guy who can bowl in the powerplay. So we have a lot more options now in the first six overs,” Chahal mentioned.

Talking about challenges bowling in powerplays, Sundar feels it gives you a lot of satisfaction and happiness.

It is a challenge, especially on this ground (M Chinnaswamy). It’s also exciting because it will give you a lot of happiness and satisfaction to succeed here. I think I will come good here as well. In the first six overs, it’s important to be a bit proactive. I always try to get an advantage over the batsman by reading his mind,” he added.

With no mystery balls in his armoury, Sundar relies on his strength and works hard on that.

When you have mystery balls, you have an advantage. When you don’t have that you have to stick to your strengths and believe that you can perform in crunch situations. I haven’t looked at too many options because I don’t think I need to look at those things,” concluded Sundar.
