IPL 2019: Looking Forward to Finish in the Second Spot – Shreyas Iyer

Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered a thumping loss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to lose the pinnacle spot in the points table at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Following their most humiliating defeat in the season, Shreyas Iyer said they are now looking for a second spot finish in the points table.

Chasing 179, Delhi succumbed in front of some quality spin bowling from the Chennai Super Kings. Imran Tahir bagged four while Ravindra Jadeja and Harbhajan Singh three and one wicket to bowl out Delhi for 99 runs, thus winning the match by 80 runs. Shreyas Iyer tried his part, but a brilliant pair of hands from MS Dhoni got him out to end Delhi’s chances.

Previously, cameos from Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja along with a timely half-century from Suresh Raina helped them post 179 runs at the end of 20 overs. After a slow start, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis bailed the team before Raina started taking on the bowlers. However, after his dismissal, Jadeja (25 off ten balls) and Dhoni (44 off 22 deliveries) took to a challenging total.

Shreyas Iyer rued poor effort from the batsmen for this loss. However, he said it is a good reality check for the whole team, and they would be on their feet in the next games.

“It is really going to affect us especially the run rate. The way we chased, it wasn’t expected from the batsmen but it is a good reality check for us. Good that it happened at this stage and everybody would be on their toes in the next game,” Iyer said at the end of the game.

It was lightning fast from Dhoni: Iyer

MS Dhoni was again showed his class as he got the better of Shreyas Iyer and Chris Morris from behind the wicket. The Delhi skipper was all but full of praise for the senior statesman. Meanwhile, this is the first time Iyer has got out stumped in the IPL.

“The way he stumped me, it was lightning speed, I couldn’t control and with the way the ball spun, it was difficult to get back. I was really looking good and thought I would be taking on the next few overs. It was an unfortunate wicket of mine. I never thought about that before (stumped for the first time in IPL),” he added.

Shreyas Iyer also said that they didn’t want to risk with Kagiso Rabada who is having a stiff back. In conclusion, he said that they would like to beat Rajasthan Royals in the last league game and will look to secure a top-two finish.
