Delhi Capital returned to winning ways after registering a close-fought victory against the Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets. DC skipper Shreyas Iyer played a captain’s knock and remained unbeaten on 59 to see his team through. Earlier in the day, it was Chris Gayle who played a breezy knock of 69 to take KXIP to a competitive score of 163.
Meanwhile, Kings XI Punjab was able to post a competitive of 163 runs after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bat first at a slow and low pitch of Feroz Shah Kotla. Chris Gayle was the leading run-scorer for the visitors as he played a fine knock of 69 runs from 37 balls. The southpaw batsman blasted half-a-dozen sixes and five sixes in his innings.
Punjab kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could not get the momentum going in their batting innings. Mandeep Singh and Harpreet Brar provided the finishing touches to the innings as they 30 and 20 runs respectively. Sandeep Lamichanne bowled with aplomb and made most of the conditions.
The leg-spinner scalped three wickets whereas Kagiso Rabada and Axar Patel snared two wickets. Delhi Capitals lost the early wicket of Prithvi Shaw when there was a misunderstanding between the openers. However, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer came up with a fine partnership. Dhawan got off to a fine start as he was able to hit the ground running. Dhawan also brought up his 35th IPL fifty and third IPL fifty of this season. Furthermore, Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer also gave good support to Dhawan.
The southpaw kept on finding the gaps on a consistent basis and went onto score a well-defined half-century. He was supported quite brilliantly by Shreyas Iyer. The skipper took on the onus on himself to finish the match off. The Kings XI Punjab bowlers made a good comeback in the last few overs. Delhi Capitals should have won the match quite early but yet again the match went till the final over.
Shreyas Iyer remained in the crease till the end and scored 58 of 49 deliveries to get his side through. Colin Ingram played a quickfire knock and was dismissed for 19 of 9 deliveries. The small knock changed the complexion of the match. Eventually, Delhi Capitals registered the victory with a couple of deliveries to go.
Here is what Man of the Match Shreyas Iyer said at the post-match presentation
Really satisfied on winning this one after losing three home games. The way we played, it was really good to see. Dhawan got us off to a good start and that made it easier for the batsmen to follow. This pitch isn’t suitable for our batsmen who like to play it on the rise, this one’s a really slow wicket. It’s really important to finish the games and today I did that.
Sandeep is a very confident lad. Even if he goes for runs, he comes back hard. He’s fearless and positive in his approach, the presence of Amit Mishra also helps him. We want our top-order batsmen to play fearless cricket and that’s what happened.
Dhawan is playing fearless cricket right throughout the season and that’s helping us. Either of the top four batsmen has to stay there till the end and take the team through. I took the responsibility today and I hope to continue that in the matches to come.
