IPL 2019: Ricky Ponting Believes Shikhar Dhawan Could Have Play Quicker Against Chennai Super Kings
On Tuesday (26th March) night, Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered a defeat in the close game against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground (Delhi). After that game, the DC head coach Ricky Ponting claimed that Shikhar Dhawan could’ve played quicker in that game.
It was the first home game for DC in IPL 2019. However, the pitch wasn’t easy for the batsmen as they had to work harder to add runs on the scoreboard. While the most DC batsmen failed to put strong fight, the opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan scored 51 runs off 47 balls with seven boundaries. No other DC batsmen reached the 30-run mark as the host side managed to score 147/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, CSK had a great time during the powerplay as they managed 58/1 in first six overs. Though they also struggled in the middle-overs to score the runs freely, they still comfortably chased down that target in 19.4 overs after losing four wickets.
After that match, Ricky Ponting admitted that it was a tough wicket for batting. However, he further added that Shikhar Dhawan should play a little bit quicker as DC failed to manage the ideal total.
He said on Shikhar Dhawan’s batting, “Ideally. Yes you’d like that. Obviously, it wasn’t an easy wicket either for anyone to come in and strike, especially at the end of the Powerplay. There’s a certain role we want Shikhar to play in this team. Even by his own admission, he probably would have liked to score a little bit quicker today.”
Ricky Ponting also revealed the reason for Shikhar Dhawan’s slow batting
While Shikhar Dhawan had the strike-rate of 108.51, another opener Prithvi Shaw had the strike-rate of 150 (24 runs off 16 balls), and the wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant had the strike-rate of 192.30 (25 runs off 13 balls).
Ricky Ponting also revealed that Shikhar Dhawan had an ankle issue during his batting. He feels that it also restricted Shikhar Dhawan to score the runs freely.
Ricky Ponting added, “In an ideal world, yes we would like Shikhar to score quicker but it was difficult for him. He did his ankle while he was batting as well so his usual running between the wickets was a little bit hampered tonight.”
We need to get a little bit smarter on that wicket
Ricky Ponting claimed that they would now sit down to make better plans to bat better on these pitches. He feels that the wickets will be similar in this entire home season and they have to play smarter cricket here.
He said, “We need to sit down in the next couple of days and talk about how we are going to bat better on that surface. The wickets we are going to get right through the season are going to be quite similar to the one we got tonight. We need to get a little bit smarter on that wicket.”
DC began their IPL 2019 journey with a brilliant victory against Mumbai Indians (MI). On last Sunday (24th March) night, DC beat the home team MI by 37 runs. The latest home match against CSK was DC’s second game in the ongoing season.
DC will play their next match once again at their home venue. On Saturday (30th March) night, DC will play against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
