IPL 2019: Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn Shares High Praise on Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill, who made his debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has impressed in his very first season. Meanwhile, the batting sensation grabbed eyeballs with his clean hitting during the U19 World Cup in 2018. Since then, Gill didn’t have to look back as he bagged a deal from the Knight Riders at a hefty price. The franchise seemed satisfied with the young batsman who finished as the highest run-scorer in the U19 World Cup.
Gill to surprise few teams
The 19-year-old, predominantly an opener, had to adjust batting in the lower-order for the Kolkata side. However, he didn’t disappoint scoring 203 runs from 13 games including a fantastic half-century against Chennai Super Kings. Soon after that, Shubman Gill had a breakout season in the domestic circuit and eventually made his India debut. Although he failed to impress in the two ODIs he played against New Zealand; Gill is likely to take opponents by surprise in the upcoming IPL.
Star KKR batsman Chris Lynn in a chat with India Today hailed Shubman Gill saying that he has already shown his talents to the world. The Aussie cricketer feels this year can be a breakout season for the Punjab-born cricketer and he is going to take few teams by surprise.
“Shubman I think, between last year and this he has showed the world what he can do. He debuted in New Zealand not long ago but I think this year he can have a breakout season without putting too much pressure on him. He can bat anywhere in the order and I think he’s going to take some teams by surprise,” Lynn said.
Next big thing in Indian cricket
Robin Uthappa, the senior KKR cricketer, went one level up to admit that Shubman Gill is the next big thing in Indian cricket. Uthappa feels the young batsman has an excellent technique and is willing to work hard to achieve his goal. Uthappa also added that Gill understands his game and wants to improve which makes him even better.
“Shubman has got a very level head on his shoulders and is very sorted in his mind, he knows what he wants to do and how he wants to approach his game. He’s a hard-working lad and is someone who is willing to put in the hard yards. He is someone who knows he is talented, is probably a prodigy and the next big thing in Indian cricket but he still has a very firm head on his shoulders,” Uthappa said.
All eyes will be on Shubman Gill when Kolkata Knight Riders begin their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 24 at the Eden Gardens.
