Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee believes that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a good chance to win the IPL 2020 due to their variety in the spin-bowling unit which can be effective in the UAE condition.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is ready to host the entire IPL 2020 which will begin on this Saturday (19th September) evening. Both the IPL 2019 finalists, four-time IPL winners and the defending champions of IPL 2020 Mumbai Indians (MI) will face the three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi).
I think CSK have a good chance because of their spin attack: Brett Lee
Talking about the favourite team to win the IPL 2020, Brett Lee has picked up MS Dhoni-led CSK. He feels that the variety in spin-bowling will work very well in the UAE condition.
Lee recently told ar Sports’ show Game Plan, “They (CSK) are up there. I have picked them to win and I think CSK have a good chance because of their spin attack. With Santner, Jadeja needs to step up and be the no. 1 spinner and CSK have got great variety and none of the spinners are same, so they are at an advantage for the conditions in the UAE as the tournament progresses.”
In the IPL 2020, CSK will miss Harbhajan Singh, who has withdrawn his name from this tournament citing personal issue. However, they still have many good spinners. Apart from the all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner, who are left-arm spinners, they also have the leg-spinners Imran Tahir, Piyush Chawla and Karn Sharma. R Sai Kishore is also present in the left-arm spin-bowling option. As an off-spinner, CSK can utilise Kedar Jadhav.
Jasprit Bumrah can fill the shoes of Lasith Malinga: Brett Lee
On the other hand, the defending champions Mumbai Indians will miss the service of their most experienced bowler, Sri Lankan right-arm pacer Lasith Malinga, who is the most wicket-taker in IPL history. However, Lee is confident that the Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah can fill the shoes of Malinga due to consistency to produce the yorkers.
Lee said, “I am always Bumrah’s fan since he burst onto the scene some years ago. He has got a different bowling action, he pushes the ball in, and can swing the ball both ways. He is good with the new ball but I like him with the old ball and that’s why he can fill the shoes of Malinga and can bowl at death overs.
“He can bowl at 140kmph and zoom the ball in at the batsman’s feet. He is bowling the yorkers consistently and there are very less bowlers like that, so he can fill those shoes.”
Lee put the name of the defending champions Mumbai Indians in his top four teams’ list in the IPL 2020. The former Aussie fast bowler believes that the Mumbai franchise has the complete team.
He added, “They have to be. Champions of last year, they have got a good squad. Pollard is in form and we know what Rohit can do. They have Jasprit Bumrah, and some good spinners and some power hitters as well, so yes, they are in my top four.”
