IPL 2020: David Warner Returns To SRH Captaincy Role
Around one month ahead of the IPL 2020, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has appointed the 33-year-old Australian cricketer David Warner as the captain of their side.
On Thursday (27th February) morning, SRH has announced this captaincy change for the new season. Kane Williamson was playing the captaincy role for SRH since the beginning of IPL 2018 when the former SRH captain David Warner missed out the entire IPL 2018 due to the suspension by Cricket Australia (CA).
Though David Warner returned to the SRH side in the IPL 2019, Kane Williamson continued the captaincy role in that season. While Williamson led the SRH team in 26 IPL matches, his team won 14 games and lost 11 times (one tied). Williamson-led SRH finished as the runners-up in the IPL 2018 and finished in the fourth position in the IPL 2019. In the absence of Williamson in some matches, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the SRH team in IPL 2019.
I’ll try my very, very best to lifting that IPL Trophy this year: David Warner
However, the franchise has decided to start the new IPL season under their most successful captain David Warner. In his first term of the SRH captaincy, Warner led the team in 45 matches from 2015 to 2017. Out of those matches, SRH won 26 games and lost 19 games. Under his captaincy, SRH won their first IPL trophy in 2016 after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the final. Warner-led SRH also finished in the fourth position in the next IPL season (IPL 2017).
In his message, Warner said, “I’m thrilled to be given the captaincy for this coming IPL 2020. I’m extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to lead the team once again.
“I’d like to thank Kane and Bhuvi for the way you guys led throughout the last couple of years, you guys did an outstanding job. And I’ll be leaning on you guys for support and your insight to the game as well. And to the management thank you once again for giving me this opportunity. And I’ll try my very, very best to lifting that IPL Trophy this year.”
David Warner is the most run-scorer for SRH as the left-handed opening batsman has scored 3,271 runs for this side (average 55.44). He has won the most number of Orange Cap in IPL history as he has won it thrice, including the last season.
The IPL 2020 will begin on 29th March. SRH will start their journey in the IPL 2020 on 1st April with the home game against the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI). On 4th April, they will play their first away game in this new season against the hosts Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).
