IPL 2020 will be held in UAE as Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed receiving official clearance from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to host the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) which will start on 19th of September and conclude on 10th November after running for 53 days.
The tournament was earlier postponed from March 2020 due to Covid-19 but will finally be held in the UAE as BCCI moved it outside India due to strict lockdowns imposed in states and stringent measures taken by the government like quarantine periods which implicated the BCCI to move tournament abroad.
IPL 2020 Will Be Highest Profile Cricketing Event Ever Held In UAE
This will not be the first time in UAE as in the seventh edition in 2014, 20 matches were held in the UAE at three different venues Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, but the tournament then returned to India. The remaining of that IPL 2014 with 36 games and 4 playoffs were held in India.
“We feel extremely privileged to host what could be considered the pinnacle event of our favourite sport. The magnitude of being in a position to bring the IPL to the vast cricket loving global community, during current events which have greatly impacted our daily lives,is one we take with extreme importance,” Sheikh Nahayan Mabaraj Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Chairman of the emirates Cricket Board said in an official statement.
” This is undoubtedly the highest profile cricketing event to be held in the UAE and our team will continue to support all facets (of the tournament) and work toward delivering a successful event for the enjoyment of all sports fans; here in the UAE,in India and across the world,”he added.
The IPL 2020 will be held in three venues in the Emirates namely Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai.
“The UAE is well versed in delivering successful events sporting and lifestyle and we remain in very close contact with the BCCI, IPL communities, the UAE Government and Ministries, our Health Authority,as well as many other entities, who are all experts in their respective fields and it is our collective intent that the tournament is played in a safe, enjoyable environment. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring ‘IPL 2020’ to the UAE,” added Al Nahayan.
IPL 2020, unlike IPL 2014, will be completely held in the Emirates as the boards will try to ensure that the tournament will be safely conducted amidst the global crisis.
IPL 2020 Will See 53 Matches With 10 Double Headers
IPL chairman had confirmed that the government approved the cricket board to go ahead with IPL at UAE and also commented that both afternoon and evening matches will take place half an hour earlier than usual.
“IPL 2020 will be played from September 19 and the final will be played on November 10,2020. The 53 day tournament will witness 10 afternoon matches starting at 15:30 IST while the evening matches will start at 19:30 IST,” the BCCI release had stated.
BCCI and Vivo parted ways as the later suspended title sponsorship rights due to outcry for boycotting Chinese products which were mainly due to 20 Army personals including a Colonel killed in the violent face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in June. Also, major Chinese applications of mobile phones were banned and there are calls for boycotting all Chinese products in the aftermath of Covid-19 which spread from China.
IPL 2020 final will be played on a weekday, Tuesday, for the first time in IPL history. IPL was played from 2008, and in 2009 and partly 2014 mainly due to elections, IPL tournaments were held abroad in South Africa and UAE respectively.
