In the 13th match of the IPL 2020, the reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 48 runs at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi).

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul decided to field first after winning the toss. The defending champions Mumbai Indians scored 191/4 (20 overs) in the first innings. Then they restricted KXIP to 143/8 (20 overs).

The Kings XI Punjab batsmen struggled in the entire innings. Openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal provided the 38 runs partnership before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Mayank (25 runs). While Krunal Pandya bowled Karun Nair for a duck, captain Rahul (17 runs) was bowled by Rahul Chahar.

Nicholas Pooran tried hard but he didn’t get crucial support from the other end. James Pattinson dismissed Pooran on 44 runs off 27 balls (3 fours and 2 sixes).

Glenn Maxwell soon lost his wicket after scoring 11 runs off 18 balls. Rahul Chahar took that wicket. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed James Neesham for run-a-ball 7 runs. Then, Pattinson took the wicket of Sarfaraz Khan (7 runs). Trent Boult dismissed Ravi Bishnoi (1) cheaply.

Mumbai Indians bowlers mostly maintained discipline in that entire innings. James Pattinson (2/28), Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) and Rahul Chahar (2/26) took two wickets each.

Mumbai Indians (MI) innings

Before the defending champions opened their account, opener Quinton de Kock (0) was dismissed on the fifth ball of the match. Facing his first ball of the match on the beginning of the second over of the innings, Rohit Sharma became the third cricketer to complete 5000 IPL runs after hitting a four to Mohammed Shami.

In the fourth over, Suryakumar Yadav was run out on 10 runs. Then captain Rohit controlled the innings with the youngster Ishan Kishan. They set up the 62 runs partnership for the third wicket. Kishan lost his wicket in the 14th over after scoring 28 runs off 32 balls.

Rohit completed his fifty in 40 balls. Kieron Pollard and Rohit had the quick-fire 41 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. After scoring 70 runs off 45 balls (8 fours and 3 sixes), skipper Rohit lost his wicket on the first ball of the 17th over as Mohammed Shami dismissed him.

In the end, Pollard and Hardik Pandya fired up over the KXIP bowlers as they added game-changing 67 runs in 23 balls for the unbroken fifth wicket. Pollard remained not out 47 runs off 20 balls (3 fours and 4 sixes) and while Hardik smashed 30 not out off just 11 balls (3 fours and 2 sixes).

In the last two overs of that innings, Pollard-Hardik partnership collected 44 runs. After four fours in the 19th over, they hit four sixes in the 20th over.
