In the fifth game of the IPL 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have started their journey in this IPL season as they are now facing the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi).
The two-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders finished the IPL 2019 in the fifth position. Former New Zealand and KKR cricketer Brendon McCullum has replaced Jacques Kallis in the Head Coach role of this team for the IPL 2020. Though England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan has returned to the KKR squad, the team management have decided to continue Dinesh Karthik in the captaincy role of this team for the ongoing IPL season.
On the other hand, the record four-time IPL winning side and defending champions Mumbai Indians have again started the new IPL season with a defeat. In the opening game of the IPL 2020, they faced the last season’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Abu Dhabi, where CSK beat Mumbai Indians by five wickets with four balls to spare. So, Mumbai Indians’ disappointing story in the IPL season opener continues, which started in 2013.
However, since IPL 2013, Kolkata Knight Riders have never suffered a defeat in their opening game of an IPL season and they will try their best to maintain this impressive record in this game.
Last time, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians met during the last league stage game of the IPL 2019 (at Mumbai on 5th May 2019), where Mumbai Indians beat KKR by 9 wickets (with 23 balls remaining).
IPL 2020, Match 5: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians (KKR vs MI) – Toss Report
KKR captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss and decided to field first.
After winning the toss, Dinesh Karthik said, “We will bowl first. We saw the first game, there was some dew, so we want to make use of it. Really proud to start the tournament today. We got Morgan, Cummins, Russell and Narine. I think they’re really looking forward to this. We are looking forward to the young guys.”
Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians have made no changes in their last playing XI.
Rohit said after losing the toss, “What happened in the past it’s past. There are some areas where we need to rectify. Hopefully we don’t make those mistakes. We are playing with the same XI. Having someone like Pollard in the squad is always nice. He is a massive player for us, hopefully he’ll come out and enjoy his game, like he always goes. Malinga like Pollard, has been a massive player for us. It was unfortunate that he couldn’t make it due to personal reasons. That gives an opportunity to others. We need to enjoy our cricket as a squad.”
