IPL 2020: Rohit Sharma – Feels good to get to 5000 runs

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma becomes only the third player to reach the 5000 runs mark in the IPL history. Only RCB skipper Virat Kohli and CSK’s Suresh Raina have reached the feat before. Coming into the match against KXIP last night, Rohit was just two runs shy of the record, his stupendous knock of 70 runs from 45 balls helped him with the record as well as the team’s victory.

KXIP had the won the toss and chosen to field at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Mumbai Indians went to score a massive score of 191 with stupendous knocks by Rohit Sharma (70 runs off 45 balls) and Keiron Pollard (47 not out off 20). Hardik Pandya also made a quick 30 not out off 11 balls to power the MI score further. KXIP’s batting failed miserably in their chase and could only manage 143/8 in the 20 overs and MI won the match by 48 runs.

Feels Good to Get 5000 Runs, but Winning Game More Important: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said it was a great win for the team, and their strategy to get Punjab in the death overs work with Pollard and Pandya smashing runs. He also stated that he felt good to get to the 5000 runs mark but winning the game was more important. Only two other players have previously achieved the big feat. RCB’s Virat Kohli has scored 5430 runs in 180 matches at an average of 37.19 and CSK’s Suresh Raina has 5368 runs in 193 games at an average of 33.34.

“Was a great win. We didn’t start really well, but we knew, the kind of attack Punjab has we wanted to capitalise on that towards the back end,” Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.

“Hardik and Pollard back themselves to get those runs in the end. They have done that on many occasions. It is nice to have them in form. Overall very happy with the batting performances. Feels good to get to 5000 runs. I didn’t look much into it. Winning the game was more important,” he added.

Rohit Sharma believes “The captain looks good when the bowlers execute plans well”

The MI skipper was all praises for his bowlers who halted an explosive in form attack of KXIP to only 143 runs. Rohit stated that they had sensed it wasn’t going to be easy with the ball and they needed early wickets, which they were able to get. James Pattinson, Rahul Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah, all bagged 2 wickets each. Krunal Pandya and Trent Boult got one wicket to their name each.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy with the ball, so we knew taking early wickets was crucial. We did that. The captain looks good when the bowlers execute plans well,” Rohit said.
