Playing his 194th IPL match on Tuesday (6th October) evening, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma became the second most capped player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

During this match, Rohit surpassed Suresh Raina, who has played 193 IPL matches, and became the second most capped player in IPL history. Though Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Raina initially travelled in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with his IPL franchise team, he later withdrew his name from the entire IPL 2020 citing his personal issue.

Rohit Sharma is only one match behind from the most capped IPL player MS Dhoni

On last Friday (2nd October), when CSK were facing SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium (Dubai), CSK captain MS Dhoni surpassed Suresh Raina’s most IPL matches record by appearing in his 194th IPL match. The 39-year-old Dhoni has already played 195 IPL matches and Rohit is now only one match behind from Dhoni.

Before the ongoing MI vs RR match, Rohit Sharma scored 5074 runs in 193 IPL matches with an average of 31.71 and strike-rate of 131.24. The right-handed batsman has hit a century and 38 half-centuries in his IPL career. At present, he is the third most run-scorer in IPL history, who most recently became the third batsman to score 5000 IPL runs.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma is currently playing his 149th IPL match for Mumbai Indians, who also played the remaining 45 IPL matches for now-defunct IPL team Deccan Chargers. At present, Rohit is the second most capped player for Mumbai Indians in IPL history as only Kieron Pollard has played more IPL matches for this team (currently playing his 154th IPL match for MI) than Rohit.

In the meantime, it is also Rohit’s 158th T20 match for Mumbai Indians. Equalling the record of their former cricketer Harbhajan Singh (158 T20 matches for MI), Rohit has also become the joint second most capped player for Mumbai Indians in T20 cricket. Again Kieron Pollard is on the top position in this record as the Caribbean cricketer is playing his 176th T20 match for this team.

At present, Rohit is leading the Mumbai Indians in 110th IPL matches and 115th T20s. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians won four IPL trophies (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019) and one Champions League T20 trophy (2013).
