Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa revealed an interesting incident about MS Dhoni when he was picked up by Chennai Super Kings in 2021. The 37-year-old admires the honesty and ideas of the legendary Indian skipper which helps the players understand their role in the team.
The prolific right-handed batter has played 59 international matches for India, mostly under the leadership of MS Dhoni, with whom he shares good rapport on and off the field. Speaking on Jiocinema, Robin Uthappa said.
“One thing I admire the most about MS is that he is very open. He never hesitates in telling the truth. Even if it pinches you, he won’t shy away from telling the truth. I still remember when I was picked by CSK in the auction, Dhoni called me and said ‘I don’t know whether you’ll play or not,” Robin Uthappa said.
Even though Chennai Super Kings brought Robin Uthappa from Rajasthan Royals, he was not an ensured starter in the playing 11. Uthappa revealed that he had clear communication from that CSK skipper that he may not be part of the playing 11 at the initial stage.
“There’s still some time to go, I’m not thinking about the IPL now. If you are there (in my scheme of things) then I will tell you. I had already played 12 seasons of IPL and had been quite successful but he told me the truth upfront. I appreciate that a lot. MS is very direct and honest,” Robin Uthappa said on Jio Cinema.
Robin Uthappa who announced his retirement from International cricket in September 2022, will be seen commentating for Jiocinema in IPL 2023, along with the legendary Anil Kumble, Suresh Raina, and Parthiv Patel for the cash-rich league.
Dhoni’s Instincts Would Be Correct Eight Or Nine Times – Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa believes MS Dhoni is the kind of captain who believes a lot in his instincts and reckons the Indian legend takes responsibility for his decision and added Dhoni usually gets his instinct 8 to 9 times correct out of 10, which makes one of the most successful captains in cricket history.
“Dhoni must be the world’s most uncomplicated person. He believes a lot in instincts. Perhaps that is why he has been such a successful captain. He is the type of person who takes responsibility. Whether the outcome is good or bad, he will always take full responsibility. If a good captain’s instinct is correct four or five times out of 10, Dhoni’s instincts would be correct eight or nine times,” Robin Uthappa added.
With the IPL about to begin, Chennai Super Kings will take on Gujarat Titans in their opening encounter on Friday. CSK are known for making brilliant comebacks as they won the IPL 2018 after returning to the Indian Premiere League after being suspended for two years in 2016 and 2017. They will look to make a comeback under the inspiring leadership of their skipper MS Dhoni in 2023.
