Five Big Names In Cricket Who Went Unsold At The IPL 2020 Auction

The big night of the IPL 2020 auction has finally ended with each of the eight teams filling their squads with the necessary players. Out of the eight city-based franchises, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have filled all the 25 spots in their squad list. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have a squad size of 24.

However, the most awaited event of this year took off with some interesting twists at the bidding game. Teams engaged in a bidding war over a few overseas cricketers. Kolkata Knight Riders got hold of the Aussie spearhead Pat Cummins at the costliest price of 15.50 Cr.

Meanwhile, franchisees also took possession of the uncapped youngsters for big money whereas the big names like Colin Munro, Yusuf Pathan, and few others were unable to make it by any side.

Here is the list of the top five big names of the cricketers who surprisingly went unsold at the auction that took place at the ITC Royal Bengal Hotel of Kolkata.

Five Big Cricketers Unsold at the IPL 2020 Auction:

Yusuf Pathan (Base Price – 1 Cr.):

Yusuf Pathan was among the list of the cricketers who went unsold at the IPL 202o auction on Thursday. The batting allrounder was first picked by Rajasthan Royals ahead of their victorious opening at the prime league.

Yusuf is among one of the big record-making cricketers when it comes to IPL. It will the first time in his IPL career that Yusuf won’t be a part of the tournament.

In the glorious victory of RR at the first edition of IPL, Yusuf scored the fastest half-century of that season in just 21 balls.

Meanwhile, his best came in the 2010 season when Yusuf single-handedly took Royals close to the victory against Mumbai Indians but the team finally just failed to win that game. In their very first game of that season, Yusuf scored a 37-balls century that was studded with 11 consecutive boundaries.

However, the hardest-hitting batsman could not make it to the IPL 2020 season when Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped him after he gave two unsuccessful seasons to the franchise. Yusuf’s younger brother and the veteran allrounder Irfan Pathan posted a heartfelt tweet for him after he missed his spot in the IPL2020.

Martin Guptill (Base Price – 1 Cr):

The 33-year-old New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill is the innings opener for the Black Caps in the limited-overs game. He stepped his foot in the IPL leagues during the ninth edition of the prime event. He came in as a replacement for the injured Lendl Simmons and played for Mumbai Indians.

However, the right-hander was able to score only a total of 57 runs in the three matches he had played. In the following season, he was taken in by Kings XI Punjab but once again, he could only capture a total of 132 runs from seven games.

Guptill was released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the IPL 2020 auction as he could yet not prove his mettle for the Hyderabad franchise. Time and again, the New Zealand cricketer just could not present his game with any of the three franchises.

Guptill went unsold at the auction of the upcoming 13th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Colin Munro (Base Price – 1Cr):

Another New Zealand batsman, Colin Munro is famously known for having a knack of hitting centuries in the white-ball game. Colin is one of the best batsmen of New Zealand in limited-overs cricket, one with the ability to hit across boundaries in the shortest format of cricket.

Having performed exceptionally in the twenty-overs game across the globe, Colin was sure to be picked in IPL. In 2016, he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders, but sadly the southpaw ended up scoring a mere 30 runs from the four games he played that season.

In 2017, Colin became the fourth international cricketer to produce multiple T20I centuries which is topped by Chris Gayle of West Indies. Once again, the Kiwi allrounder was the most-talked cricketer on the streets of the cricketing world.

Nevertheless, the left-hander was released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2020 auctions. He entered the IPL 2020 bidding arena with a base price of Rs. 1 Cr but went unsold anyways.

Manoj Tiwary (Base Price – 50 lacs):

Compared with England’s Kevin Pieterson for knocking the bowlers off with his impressive front-foot play, Manoj Tiwary is the aggressive right-handed batsman. However, the cricketer was unable to leave his mark in international cricket as he did in the domestic games.

Tiwary played for Delhi Capitals during the early editions of the IPL before DC traded him to Kolkata Knight Riders in exchange for Moises Henriques for the IPL 2010 season. There he stayed for four seasons from 2010 to 2013 and posted above 1000 runs from 54 matches he played. In the final of IPL 2012, Manoj Tiwary hit the winning runs off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo to help Kolkata Knight Riders win the title.

Later, Tiwary was picked by Rising Pune Supergiant ahead of the IPL 2017 season, and the following season he was roped in by Kings XI Punjab.

However, in the IPL 2020 auction, Tiwary was not picked up by any of the IPL franchisees during the bidding war.

Shai Hope (Base Price – 50 lacs):

If Chris Lynn’s shockingly easy pick for MI was anything to talk about, then Shai Hope being unsold was another unexpected thing at the auction night of the IPL 2020. The wicketkeeper-batsman of West Indies was anticipated to be among the highest bids for his performance in the international cricket.

It was his first time when Hope was registered for the IPL auctions. However, coming in at the base price of 50 lacs, Hope went unsold. The young Barbadian has featured only in 11 T20I innings and scored a total of 238 runs with two half-centuries.
