Irani Cup: Watch – On-field Umpire Struck by a Fielder’s Throw
In one of the most unfortunate incidents, umpires have faced injuries from time-to-time, but in the recent incident that took place during the ongoing Irani Cup saw an on-field umpire CK Nandan was struck on the back of his head by Vidarbha fielder who threw the ball from the long-off region.
To be precise, the throw from the fielder also damaged the sunglasses when Nandan coupled a blow during the second session of fourth day’s play. The umpire was writhing in pain before physios rushed to his aid. They attended the umpire who held his head soon after the ball struck on his head.
So much so, his on-field colleague Nitin Menon has suggested him to go off the field, but adamant Nandan gave thumbs up before the restart of the play. He continued umpiring after avoiding a major head injury scare.
The incident unfolded when Aditya Sarwate for Vidarbha was bowling the fifth ball of the 95th over.
It saw Rest of India’s Hanuma Vihari pushing the ball for a single. However, the long-off fielder picked the ball with one hand before releasing it back to the bowler.
Interestingly, in 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Nandan had escaped an injury. Similarly, he received a blow on his head.
Nandan soon after calling for the strategic time-out, coupled a blow.
WATCH OUT UMP!
On-field umpire C.K.Nandan had to bear the brunt of a ball thrown accidentally at him. Looked comical on camera but that would have hurt. Get the ice pack lads!

However, many are of the view that umpire should have watched the ball rather than looking at the other hand.
Recently, the shortest versions of the game have witnessed umpires wearing helmets to avoid any untoward incident during the game. Of late, the rise in head injuries has been a matter of grave concern.
