Australian captain and ICC Cricketer of the year 2015 Steven Smith expressed his reaction to the Cricket Australia website.
The right-hander batsman told, “You don’t think about these awards and these accolades. You just want to go out there and do the best you can for your team to try and win as many games as possible. To be recognised as the best player this year against some unbelievable talent around the world, it’s very humbling and it’s an honour.”
The 26-years old batsman was selected on Wednesday for ICC Cricketer of the year 2015 as well as ICC Test Cricketer of the year 2015. During the selection time (18th September 2014 to 13th September 2015), Smith was the leading runs scorer with 1,734 runs in the 25 innings, averaging 82.57.
Smith had made his debut as a leg-spinner at five years ago. But at later, his role was changed to an important top order batsman. He said, “You have to pinch yourself sometimes – it’s all a little bit surreal on occasions. Five years ago I wouldn’t have pictured myself in this position. It’s been one hell of a ride, the last five years.”
After his Test debut, Smith had concentrated on improving his batting. Smith told, “To try and find a game that can be adaptable and be successful at this level.”
He said after cementing his place in the Test team in 2013 as a batsman, “I said when I got another opportunity I wanted to make the most of it and I think I’ve done that.”
He concluded, “Hopefully there’s a lot of improvement left in me.”
