On Wednesday (19th August) morning, Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks started their journey in the CPL 2020 with their meeting in the third game of the tournament at Brian Lara Cricket Academy (Tarouba). Jamaica started this tournament with a five-wicket victory.
After Jamaica Tallawahs decided to field first, St Lucia Zouks managed the first innings total of 158/7 (20 overs). In reply, Jamaica successfully chased that target in 18.5 overs after losing five wickets (160/5).
Jamaica Tallawahs innings: Glenn Phillips and Asif Ali strongly batted
Chasing down that target, Jamaica Tallawahs lost their opener Chadwick Walton (2) and the no.3 batsman Nicholas Kirton (1) at very cheaply. However, another opener Glenn Phillips and skipper Rovman Powell quickly set up the 63 runs partnership for the third wicket.
When Jamaica started to take the strong position in that chasing, they lost both their set batsmen Powell (26 runs off 17 balls) and Phillips (44 runs off 29 balls; 3 fours and 3 sixes) in back-to-back overs.
Then Asif Ali and Andre Russell built up the strong fifth-wicket partnership of 42 runs. Though Russell (16) lost his wicket at the crucial moment, Ali and Carlos Brathwaite handled the late moment very well and comfortably guided the team to the victory.
The Player of the Match award winner Asif Ali remained not out on 47 runs off 27 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes) while Brathwaite scored 18 not out off 9 balls.
Among the St Lucia Zouks bowlers, only Kesrick Williams (2/32) managed to pick up more than wicket.
St Lucia Zouks innings: Roston Chase’s fifty helped Zouks to reach 150+ total
Opener Rahkeem Cornwall lost his wicket in the second over after scoring nine runs. The no.3 batsman Mark Dayal scored 17 runs off just six balls (only four and 2 sixes) before losing his wicket.
Another opener and wicket-keeper batsman Andre Fletcher scored 22 runs but lost his wicket soon after the mandatory powerplay. The middle-order batsmen Roston Chase and Najibullah Zadran provided the 52 runs partnership for the fourth wicket.
Najibullah lost his wicket after scoring 25 runs. However, Chase continued his recent good form. Meanwhile, Mohammad Nabi scored 13 runs before his national teammate Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed him through the caught & bowled method.
In the 18th over of that innings, Chase completed his maiden T20 fifty in 39 balls. He was dismissed by Mujeeb in the 19th over after he scored 52 runs off 42 balls (4 fours and 2 sixes). His strong batting helped Zouks to reach the 150+ total in that first innings.
Among the Jamaica Tallawahs bowlers, Veerasammy Permaul (2/34) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/25) took two wickets each.
