While the year 2019 is ending, England Test captain Joe Root has claimed that it was a frustrating year for them. Though he is disappointed with their Test performances in 2019, he has still enough belief in this team.

The no.4-ranked Test team England won four Tests out of 12 Tests they played in 2019, while they lost six Tests (other two had the draw results). Talking about their yearly win/loss ratio, the 2019 edition (win/loss ratio = 0.666) is their worst year since 2002.

Root claimed according to India Today, “It’s been frustrating. It’s been quite a big year of transition in Test cricket. There’s been a lot of change over the year.”

While England completed a whitewash in the three-match Test series in Sri Lanka in November 2018, they failed to maintain those consistent Test performances in this year.

Joe Root added, “If you look at where we were at the back end of Sri Lanka (in 2018), you’d really have thought we were making strides away from home with signs that things had improved.”

It’s a determined group of players who are very keen to do that – Joe Root

At the beginning of this year, the England team surprisingly suffered a Test series defeat in West Indies as the hosts beat England in the three-match Test series by the 2-1 margin. England started their new home Test season, after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, in a horrific way as Ireland bundled them out for just 85 runs in the first innings of the Lord’s Test. However, the experienced England side rescued themselves from more embarrassment as England won that Lord’s Test by 143 runs.

In the home Ashes 2019, Australia and England won two matches each, but England failed to rescue the home Ashes trophy (from 2005, England failed the first time to win the home Ashes trophy). The Ashes 2019 was also the beginning of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2019-21).

Recently, in November-December, England lost the two-match away Test series against the hosts New Zealand by the 1-0 margin. England ended the year 2019 with another Test defeat against the hosts South Africa at Centurion (lost by 107 runs) as the visitors are trailing the four-match Test series by the 1-0 margin with three to go.

Joe Root feels that they have a long way to go to achieve the top success in Test cricket. However, he believes that this team has the potential to do far better in Test cricket.

Root said, “There is still a long way that this team can go and we are looking at all the areas where we can get better. It’s a determined group of players who are very keen to do that. You cannot fault anyone’s effort, anyone’s desire, the character to want to improve.

“Over time, if we can learn these lessons and find ways of shifting our mentality into the first innings from the second innings, then we are going to give ourselves a much better chance of winning games.”

In the ongoing 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship, England are currently in the sixth position with 56 points after six Tests.
